Black Widow - The Avengers Movie Style

I think I have identified the fabric used for the jumpsuit as either Cordura or Ballistic Nylon. Does anybody agree with this or have another idea on the type of fabric.

Would love to agree that it was a ballistic but I thought the same of the "wine" Hawkeye material and then it was discoverd it's a special dye type, etc. It (BW) looks like a jr. ballistic cordura type when you get close up;

Loving this discussion - never did get around to making an IM2 suit but I'm hoping this one will be easier as it's all black rather than black-blue. :)

By the way, does anyone know the name of the buckles used for her suit? I'm trying to browse eBay for some but it's difficult to narrow the field down.

are you guys talking about something like this:
Black 480 Denier Coated Ballistic Nylon ?
or...?

I'm still wondering how you get those seams, ie,... is that an overlay of some kind of grosgrain tape (the V down the chest around the middle of the breast area) over the seams... or? what's going on there...?

Lady S, that turned out fabulous! Do you mind if I ask what you ended up using for your fabric?

I was wondering where you found the gloves that you wore? Or did you make them? I've looked around but found nothing! I'm going to SDCC as her and want my outfit to be exactly like the one in Avengers. (I'm new to this site, actually found it looking for BW ideas! I don't really know where to start!) Thanks!

From this shot the cloth looks kinda rubbery.

Look at the elbows and the crotch area.

For buckles Google for Cobra buckles and click Images. There's hundreds of hits.

my worry about using a ballistic nylon... it wouldn't be stretchy at all, right?
It seems like it would need to at least have some give?

Wow! I love how clean your buckle and discs are! You have got a real knack for the moulding process! Sweet work, I bet this will look incredible once you are finished! :D

If you look at the super hi-res shots of her you can clearly see the texture of the material and it's definitely not rubber. As others have said, it's some sort of nylon be it Cordura or ballistic.

... but ballistic wouldn't have any stretch at all, typically this type of bodysuit does to fit her properly...?

I'm with Aimee on this... there has to be some lycra/spandex content in that material. A jumpsuit that fitted made out of a non-stretch material would be pretty miserable, and I don't see how anyone can get around in that... much less do some of the stunts/action she was doing.

Could be a hybrid material, maybe a nylon/spandex mix? Doing a quick Google search turns up a number of hits for elastic and nylon/spandex fabrics but I have no idea if any of them have the same texture as seen on the BW costume.

it's also just the way the fabric looks when it folds and when it's compressed (like at her leg holster), it looks to me like a fabric that has some kind of stretch to it...

about hybrid fabrics, I have no idea what's out there. If you've found some maybe post some links? (this seems like something one would have to swatch to see if the fabric would be useable or not...)

Definitely?

Ew! Scarlett Johansson Compares The Avengers Catsuit to Sweaty Pajamas - UsMagazine.com

The Avengers star may look sexy in her Black Widow costume, but underneath she says it wasn't quite as pretty.

Johansson chatted on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Wednesday about her fan-favorite catsuit costume. "It's sort of like a wetsuit I suppose," Johansson, 27, explained to Jay Leno."It's like a little adult ones."

Leno was very intrigued and asked, "Does it breathe? Are you sweating in this thing?"

"It gets a little sticky in there," she admitted. "But compared to what everybody else is wearing it was nothing. It was like a walk in the park."

Still, Johansson said, “It was pretty much like wearing sweaty pajamas.”

The 27-year-old revealed the outfit was getting her literally hot under the collar as she spilled behind-the-scenes secrets of the superhero sensation, due for release on April 26.

Speaking from the set in New Mexico, she said: “Everybody on the film has their own uncomfortable costume situation. It’s like 800° in mine. And it’s a one-piece and I have nothing underneath it.”

According to Scarlett, costumes in Marvel Avengers Assemble are the most daring of her career to date.

She described the cast’s dressing process as “very surreal”, adding: “It was kind of an out-of-body experience. Like a dress-up, but to the extreme.

“Everybody looks incredibly uncomfortable until the cameras are rolling.

“Then we all look badass. And when the Avengers assemble, it feels like being a little kid.

“Then, cut! And we’re all like, ‘Arrgh, God, get this thing off me.’ As soon as everything is cut, everything comes off.

“All our costumes are unzipped, some air conditioning venting unit goes in, someone is having a wig removed... we all have our various things that we have to do to get comfortable.”

Scarlett Johansson and her Avengers co-stars all set up meetings with dermatologists when the summer blockbuster wrapped - because they all had rashes and skin problems from their tight-fitting costumes.

The actress reveals none of the cast were thrilled with their superhero outfits - because they were designed to dazzle onscreen and not for comfort.

And she admits her Black Widow latex catsuit was "a bit of a challenge".

She tells USA Today, "The material is like a torture chamber. I literally had to peel it off.

"We all had skin conditions going with our outfits after 15 hours of non-stop sweat. I was sending pictures to my dermatologist in Los Angeles."

Thanks for the info! I was afraid of something like that... latex, neoprene or a variety of other materials would be wicked hot. (if you look at how smooth her crotch area is though, (haha, I feel funny saying that) there's no way you could get that area that smooth (no wrinkles) with a nonstretch fabric... so I'd believe it's a latex or neoprene or something...) Maybe there are some other options that look nice but aren't so grueling.

Once place to check out that I just found is Spandex World Inc. spandex fabric, lycra stretch fabric , nothing seems to match the texture seen on the BW costume but I didn't go through every category either. Whatever the fabric really is the key to finding an exact match is matching the texture, it's very distinctive and doesn't look like straight spandex or neoprene to me. However, I just did a search for textured neoprene and I found some images showing stuff that, while not an exact match, does have a similar texture. It might be worth looking more into textured neoprenes.

According to a friend of mine they used Cordura for the costume and looking at swatches of Cordura and comparing it to the hi-res shots of BW's costume it does look like Cordura. I don't know how much give Cordura has though but I did find something called spandura which is a 4 way stretch Cordura, unfortunately the site I found it on has no picture of the fabric so I can't say how good of a match it would be.

I'm not sure about cordura or not, but likely all spandura looks like this:

Seems like a nice option. I'd personally rather go with something ported as being stretchy and breathable than something misery-making.

Hey guys! I'm sorry that I'm so rarely on the boards. Work is killer. Thank you all for the compliments! My costume still has replacements and upgrades to undergo. But I won first place at the costume contest at The Avengers premier at the El Cap!

I saw a few questions directed at me:

Fabric: I just used a lycra that I found in the fabric district in LA. It was one of those that took me a few rounds there over two months before I found it.

Gloves: This is something I hope to replace as mine are fabric and not leather like hers, but I just got them at a gun shop when I was learning how to properly hold the guns and such.

Also, I know I'm getting a lot of pm's about this, so I'll just put it here. I'm not selling any castings of my bites, belt or pouches. I'll be glad to help others make them, though.

LadyS - Thanks for the update! One question. Did you draft the pattern? If so did you modify a pattern or draft it from scratch?

I LOOOOVE your movie-version Black Widow; it looks like you walked off the movie screen! :)
