the only thing im getting confused on is the wiring method
i understand the positive to negative for each led for each row.
on yours, the wiring looks a bit different, what method is that?
forgive me for being so useless!
im prepared to give soldering a try!

There are two ways to wire these - series or parallel. The LED (Light Emitting Diode) can only pass current one way. If you wire these the wrong way around, they don't light up. I doubt that there would be any damage at low voltage, they just don't work because that is what diodes do - prevent backwards flows of power.
So assuming the + is the longer leg, you can wire in series (+- to +-) or parallel (+to+ and -to-).
Diodes have little to no resistance so you need to add a resister to prevent a short across the circuit.
