Nothing new on the mask but I’ve started to play with another greeblie.
I’m having another top disc cut out of ally as I want to machine the inside bottom edge out by 1mm as the original top disc, this will house the second disc in place which I’m also having cut out of ally.

The second disc has now been my focus for a couple of weeks with my research, I’ve had some similarities but nothing conclusive as yet.

Has anybody got any ideas or heard any stories of what it could have been from no matter how silly your ideas are it’s always better with fresh thoughts as it could send my research into another direction

The second disc will have the shape and holes cut out but not the individual grooves as these will be machined at a later stage, but I need to find a cutting tool small enough for my lathe and I really mean small, 1mm or even 0.5mm
Pics to follow when I have them in hand

It could be a sink strainer or the output of an grinder. But I started a research years ago and found....nothing.Like the most time.:D

This is what my research has led me to ATM
I’ve had other small leads that I still need to look into
This is a close up of a video recording head from a VCR . It’s not an old VCR more mid 90s I’ve been looking into 50s and 60s Commercial TV studio/movie studio recording devices but there’s not much to look at yet
This is the rotary transformer from inside a recording head Helical scan type, I’m looking into tape to tape older versions of the Helical recorders as they are the type that has the rotary transformer

The top disc has the similarities of a sink plug strainer but they are press formed and have less holes with thinner metal usually 0.5 to 0.75mm stainless or brass, I’m now looking into the 2nd lower disc under the top disc

Ah interesting find.It was only an idea with the parts. For me it looked like that. And I´ve found some sink plug strainer that looks very close...but nothing perfect. So I think your right..its a complete different part.

Top disc and lower 2nd disc back, they need a little clean up, top disc is ok but I’m not happy with the lower 2nd disc, that’s going back to the drawing board for some refinements and a recut.

What are your thoughts ?
Is it me or does the disc show it’s outside edge under the top disc ? Making the second disc slightly smaller than I originally anticipated
Also the holes on the second disc are they that close to the outside edge that the thread in the holes has no outside edge /material for a thread
Take a close look at the pic

Had a quick play, clean up of the top disc (ish)
Second disc is definitely not correct, I tried to thread one of the holes ( disaster)

Great work.
The mask is in Sydney now and I’m in heaven. I’ve bought a museum membership and have gone 3 times already. It’s a great ‘early Friday arvo escape from work’
On my last visit I took the zipper peice you made and compared it from outside the glass. Obviously it’s not possible to get it side by side, but when looking at it with the eye you can gauge a good level of proportion naked eye style
I’ve got to say that the zipper looks bang-on
Great job & keep up the facdisious work.
I did the same with kurty boys neck brace mesh. It looks bang on too.
I’ll be progressively take each of the peices in to compare from outside the glass. Naked eye style
My aim is to complete as much of my mask as I can before it goes in June

I’d say you are probably correct on the lower disc. I too believe it is a helical scan part from a very old recorder. I found replacement parts online from some off-brand scan heads and they look very much like this, although I don’t have a good size reference and also the holes in the ones online appear much more simetrical in layout. I’d say these, and some other known (and unknown) prop parts likely come fron the same device/s.

Pictures man PICTURES !
Get as many close up pictures as you can
Did I mention pictures they all come in handy

I also think that many greeblies came from the same item, strip it down and use what you can then move on to another device.
The helical scan head might have come from an old tape to tape recorder VTR from the 50s or 60s as these types were replaced in the late 60s early 70s with more modern and revolutionary technology but they all kept the helical scan recording heads, even in the 80s 90s they still had the helical scan heads
When I was looking into the reveal ears I got into looking at old video recorders from the 60s when they started moving into video cassette tapes ( part of the load/unload mechanism) there’s some similarities but no cigar
The helical scan head was also used in different computer drives (smaller versions)
that I haven’t looked at yet, maybe the 2nd disc and the ears are somewhere in the computing archive world

I’ve been doing some simultaneous research on another prop and I’d say, if they do share an originating product, I’d recommend the late 60’s. I can’t find any good breakdown images unfortunately, but I am still looking.
