Behemoth Head sculpt from start to finish (tons of progress pictures!)

And those tips are similar to what I do :) sometimes if I need something to stand by its self like the mandibles, I grabbed some frozen peas, and touched the clay with the packet, within a minute it was solid.

Still working away at allot of the small details, the camera on my galaxy s5 don't seem to capture them very well :/
Hope to have it molded by new year.

Unfortunately it will be a bit longer until this piece is finally molded and cast, due to me still needing to get some equivalent to ultracal30 since shipping a 50lb bag is simply to expensive lol. Also with my usual luck the 4 gallons of monstermakers rd407 latex I bought to cast up a few of these were damaged during Shipping and never arrived, so I needed to reorder those as well -_- way to start 2016

Well, as I was working on molding the mandibles one piece of the mold broke while I attempted to separate them. Got me a bit discouraged, however I will be doing another attempt today, if that goes well, I'm hoping it will give me the drive to to start molding the whole piece.

This is looking pretty brutal.

For the small molds I've had good luck with cardboard sealed with packing tape. Taped together and sealed with clay It's easy to work with and get custom sizes.

With the metal you used, using tape to seal the holes and then hot gluing it down could have helped the leakage. I usually add clay around the edges of the first piece to avoid the gaps filling up too. It also bevels the edge just a little. I'm assuming that you petroleum jellied up the first side too.

I put down some monster makers mold release, but unfortunately I'm an mpatient SOB (mold broke again however I sort of didn't even wait more than 4 hours ... kinda serves me right XD) ... back to sculpting another right mandible.

And thanks for the tip Master Anubis, that will certainly come in handy if I need to mold anything too big for my little metal plates.

Hang in there Lunatic! Your awesome project is one of the reasons I wanted to make a mask of my own! I'm so looking forward to when you're wearing it, all done and dusted!

I've never used Monster Makers mold release but it says is for foam latex. It doesn't sound like that is what you should be using here.

When you're ready to do the second half of the mold the first half should be coated lightly with petroleum jelly to seal it and prevent it from bonding with the new ultracal. I use a chip brush. The part should be nice and clean and doesn't need release but it won't hurt if it's light. I can't seem to find the example pics I took of my process.

A well made mold will yield better casting and last longer. It's good that you're getting the learning curve done with the mandible. Ruining a large sculpt can be... discouraging.

This isn't exactly how I do it but Tonk's got a good overview of the head mold. There are other good ones out there but this is a good example of a pred head.

I will second the petroleum jelly as release between layers. Since you are home brewing your ultracal with plaster and cement you might want to put a burlap layer in to reinforce things and a few pry points would not hurt either.
