Bandai 1/72 PG Millennium Falcon (also the Revell Germany rebox)

DanielB Got my Tamiya lacquers in today, and did a quick test. This is onto bare bandai plastic, no primer. Turns out that Sindariel was right:

LP vs AS colors.jpg

The AS-20 is a little darker and slightly warmer than the LP-35. Thinned it 50/50 with Tamiya lacquer thinner. Sprayed really well, as expected. I quite like the look of it, honestly. It doesn't go on as thick as the spray can does, thus preserving some of the finer details.

I actually think I like the LP-35 better. The Falcon is slightly warm, but at this scale (I assume 1:144) it's likely weathering will warm up the tone anyway, as most weathering products have a slightly brown tint. I've had a few Star Wars models look too tan because of this. The LP-35 will help with that.

I like the LP-35, too. I've used it on my B-Wing and it gave me the exact slightly greyish look, i had in mind for it. It also turned out to be the perfect choice for my little Tantive. AS-20 was just waaay too warm for that scale.

What I don't like about it, is the terrible coverage. It's a pretty translucent paint and a pain to spray over a dark/black base.

Is the LP-35 more matte than the AS-20?

It’s cool that the LP-35 is less warm... I find the AS-20 too warm.

Pretty much the same i'd say.

PS:
LP-36 is a good choice for the Y-Wing canopy and B-Wing markings. A pretty spot on light blue.

It is accomplished. Started November of 2017, been working on it ever since, finished this evening. And not a moment too soon, we are expecting our new baby in the next 24 hours!

Shout out to my wife for building a baby in half the time it took me to make this mfer.
Special thanks to members Lab, whose paint recommendations I used, and Nkg, who’s 3d printed fans provided a nice touch.
And thank you to all the people that have posted their amazing builds and given me inspiration!

I took pictures throughout the process with a build log in mind, who knows when I’ll get to that.

Not to cause offense but...AS-20 FOREVA!

Wow! There is no room for improvement - perfect!
Any advice for creating the black mini rectangles?
PS: All the best wishes to your Baby!

Thank you!
The rectangles took a looooong time. I thought of masking just the larger ones, and using faber castell pens for the smaller, but using the pens was just as tedious and didn’t look nearly as good.

The way that worked best was to recognize that there are several different sizes, and make a series of removable masks for the different sizes and variations.

I would put a large piece of yellow tape on a flat sheet of plastic, cut out a hole in the tape center with an x-acto knife, then overlay some of tamiya’s 6mm yellow tape on top of the hole to make the shape. This way, I just peel off the larger piece of tape, and the smaller pieces making up the shape are all held in place upon the larger piece.

I used an airbrush to paint the color on, which was a mix of tamiya German grey and brown.

As long as the coat is not wet, the paint won’t sleep under. The only real difficulty is getting the mask in the exact right spot, since the surrounding area becomes blocked by the mask as you are putting it in place.

I labeled the example below, but I don’t remember what the label means. You can see I used the pens for the smaller marks on this particular quadrant.

Looks awesome! Which version of the fans did you go for?

Thank you!
I used the fans alone and built an enclosure for them out of pvc adaptors. References seem to show the sides of the fan wells as being either threaded or ribbed. I found the adaptors at the local hardware store and with mods they fit the bill.

That's a top ten -- maybe top five -- Falcon right there. It doesn't get much better! When I feel the tightness of jealousy in my chest, I know I'm looking at something brilliant. Damn you, it's really really good. Damn you...

Mozel Tov on the baby! And Model Tov on the Falcon!

Fans look great! The deep cylinders look pretty good also. I went for a shallower design to allow for clearance to stuff below, but the depth is fun!
