Anyone know anything about the John Wick Gold Coins?

Yes, the metal is expensive. But, If it doesn't come out good, I may have to redo it.

image.jpgimage.jpg This is after I painted the coin in gold. I think the back looks really good.

i'm starting to think that with the super low resolution of the 3d printed coins, what i'd end up doing is using one for a base tossing some clay on it and sculpt in the detail myself to make it super accurate...because lets face it, the 3d coin is just too low a quality for what i think people truly want to buy.

Yankfan09's coin didn't come out as good as mine. We'll see how the metal looks when it arrives.

I don't know anything about 3d design or printing but I'm trying to learn. Xxstyxx, would you be able to raise the design up a little more? I don't know the exact term you would call it but if you could possibly make it more pronounced I think it would look better printed? I really don't know though.

I could do that, but thats the problem with shapeways.
If there is a "wall like" part on the model thats TO thin, i get a warning from shapeways this parts could break.

Here are screens from an angle, you can see most of the parts are fairly high (for a coin), so i have no idea whats the problem.
I mean, even the dots on the rim are barely visible in the print. o_O

Edit:
Ok, the Text on the Side with the Woman is really flat. I didnt noticed that.
I could change that but it want fix the other problems.

Edit2:
I take it out of the shop for now.

Depending on how they print it, the 'down' side or lower half can be squashed by the accumulation of material above it. This can lead to circular or cylindrical parts being 'out of round' or asymmetrical. I've experienced this with White Strong And Flexible parts, both polished and unpolished. Until they implement some sort of print orientation option, we may just be stuck with it.

UPDATE : Shapeways just rejected my coin for printing in gold plated brass. In so many words they said some of the detail such as some of the text on the Lady side and other detail is below the minimum size for brass.

Minimum size of embossed detail :

Polished Plastic .2 mm high and wide / .5 mm high for text
Ultra Detail Plastic .1 mm high and wide
Plated Brass .4 mm high and wide

A lot of detail is very small. Styxx printed his in Polished Plastic and I printed mine in Ultra Detail Plastic.
Mine was twice as small of detail so it turned out much better.

When they say .2 mm, they don't mean the "E" has to be .2 mm ... they mean each "LEG" of the "E" has to be .2 mm

I didn't mean for you to take the coin off from shapeways xxStyxx. I will order it in ultra detail plastic as soon as you put it on. Thank you for taking the time to work on it though. I know we all appreciate it.

it will be interesting to see what a metal one looks like

Indeed, the metal coin is what peeks my interest. The 3D printed ones are a good start, but c'mon metal would be fantastic.

I love all the work that everyone has put into this. Making a coin is beyond my skill set.

Keep up the great work everyone! :thumbsup

I ordered mine in Ultra Detail and will send it on to Ultraman to see if he can possibly make a metal replica.

Alternatively, I could try beefing up the text on the Lady side but Shapeways pointed out to me that the leg of the "E" was at .13 mm thick and would need to be .4 mm for printable
text. If I alter it to that degree to fit Shapeways, it will no longer be a perfect replica.

Would you like a slightly less accurate coin if it can be done in metal ?

The problem with casting the coin is that you got to stay in certain tolerances for mold making, I have this problem all the time with client work. The best way to do it is to get a die made of it but thats incredibly expensive. Ive got a plan, if ever i get round to finishing mine, to build it in direct castable resin and then having a chaser run over it to put in all the fine detail, he basically goes over it with hammer and tiny tools. From this i hope to get a workable mold.

This is some good stuff! I've wanted such a coin since I saw the movie and I should've known the RPF is on it :D

New materials at Shapeways!

"On April 15th we will be retiring Frosted Detail and introducing Frosted Extreme Detail

What's happening? On April 15th we are:

• Introducing Frosted Extreme Detail (FXD), with a higher resolution than Frosted Ultra Detail (FUD)
• Retiring Frosted Detail (FD); FUD will remain unchanged
• Renaming the Detail Plastics materials Acrylic Plastics

Frosted Extreme Detail has a higher resolution than Frosted Ultra Detail, decreasing the layer height from 29 to 16 microns (the shorter the layer, the higher the resolution). While more expensive to produce, thinner layers means unprecedented detail and surface finish, sharper edges, less stepping, and stronger models. It’s perfect for the most demanding miniatures, figurines, and molds and masters for casting.

Frosted Detail is a fragile material that often breaks during 3D printing, requiring reprints that make the process costly and slow. Because it is printed enclosed in support material that is difficult to completely clean, it's also hard to give you the quality you deserve. Unfortunately, after trying hard to improve the process, we've decided to stop production and focus on better alternatives for you.

Finally, we are renaming Detail Plastic to help reinforce that it is stronger but less detailed than our Frosted Detail Plastic."

...So, maybe hold off on ordering a coin for a little while?

I'm interested in a coin regardless of material. Was just saying that metal would be cool. Go with whatever is going to produce an accurate version. Keep up the great work. the 3D printing and modeling is beyond me so great job on this.
