I should really learn to cast. I depend too much on Shapeways. I'm just making it 3D and printing it at Shapeways in polished green plastic.

I ordered xxStyxx version from shapeways about 2 weeks ago and received it today. I ordered in yellow polished plastic and it came very rough and you can hardly see the front of the coin at all. This is my first time ordering anything from shapeways so I'm not positive if it is a quality control problem or a problem with the file. Even though this one didn't turn out I am really excited to see more of these coins. Great job everyone.

The 'polishing' that Shapeways does is a post-printing, subtractive process, something like a rock tumbler, I think. Even when polished, the cheap plastics are a little grainy and porous. Hit it with some gold spraypaint, however, and you might change your mind. Then again, you might not.

I didn't even see that I ordered in the cheap plastic. Do you think I would get better results if I ordered the ultra detail plastic?
Yes, or at least with my coin it did.
I should have mentioned that the one I have of mine was the Ultra Detail Plastic. They don't polish it, it comes out pretty smooth anyway. But it did have noticeable print lines on one side. I added an extra coat of paint to cover it up.
