ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies Found

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

Nice aging.

Painted that should look outstanding!

The top screws on the knob are a bit over diameter but have a countersink bottom so if you can put the screws in a drill and use a file to make the diameter smaller they will sit down further.

A few of the other screws may need the same treatment or try to find vintage...that's progress for ya.

Hey Clutch

Nice WIP shots so far :)

As far as replacing the MGC with a real trigger...it can be done :thumbsup
I did this to 2 MGC´s myself. Simply unscrew the tension plate inside the lower receiver, pop out the trigger, insert the new one and reattach the spring/ plate.
Makes a hell of a difference!

The only thing you should be aware of is that you´ll loose the ability to dry-shoot your MGC, since an original C96 trigger doesn´t "activate" the arm that releases the hammer.

Oh...

and you should definately replace or at least modify the 2 screws on top of the H&W windage knob !!!

The issue with the original wooden grips being too small is well known :unsure
IIRC there are MGC´s with wooden grips out there, maybe you can still get replacements for them, even if I doubt it.

When modifying the frame of my MGC to accept the chequered (sp?) grips for the so called Stembridge blaster, I simply filled the gap with wood-putty. After drying, I sanded/ shaped it and stained it the color of the grips. The result is not perfect, BUT much better than having the ugly gap between the grips and the frame. :thumbsup

Yeah, I wish those vintage screws had been just a hair smaller. Guess I'll try to shape the supplied ones. If they don't work out, I'll have these to fall back on.

I forgot and left those last two rings in ammonia. Can't wait to see what they look like when I get home today. :lol

One more thing, when you have this gun all apart, be careful. I picked up the upper with the hammer ****** back and it snapped shut on the palm of my hand causing a nice blood blister.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

Yeah, it can bite. :lol

So, you submerge the parts in ammonia? Just confirming. I like the tone you have on the brass parts.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

let me know how you decide on the grips... check my showoff thread and take a look at the stembridge blaster I posted. You can see how the wood putty worked out

Will do Markus. :thumbsup

Do not submerge in ammonia! Here's what you do.

1) Get a container that you can seal or cover. For this quick and dirty, I used one of those clear cd spindle covers and covered it with a round wooden plaque.

2) Fill with half an inch to an inch of ammonia.

3) Find some way to suspend the parts above the ammonia. I placed glass Testors paint bottles in the ammonia and placed the brass parts on top of the bottle caps.

4) Cover and let cook. The longer you keep in, the darker they will get.

Thanks. I didn't think submerging would be a good idea.

Some more info from Malcolm...

"I'm going to put together a new web site over the Christmas holiday and try to do some manufacturing of the cylinders over the same period to build up stock. Up until now, we've probably sold no more than 20 or 30 of the cylinders per year to the retro model aircraft guys in the UK, and I've always dreaded receiving orders for those!

Any news from Malcolm? :D

...no woid yet?...

it's werry werry qwyit.

just keepin it alive.

so anyone notice how heavy that thing is going to be all built up in steel?

I just picked up my kit. It is really, really nice.

Be careful with those small pieces and screws! Anyone here NOT need glasses to put those tiny set screws in! :lol Show of hands... never mind, can't see em.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

Yes, this thing will weigh a ton. I was planning to keep the nine dummy rounds in my MGC to add heft. After feeling the weight this kit will add, don't think I'll include them after all.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

For a light weight one I'll be happy to make a mold of someone's when they get done so folks can have a foam rubber version for costuming ;)

Malcolm's broken leg is on the mend, but he's not yet up to standing for a long time in front of the injection molding machine. He still has some operations to repair ligaments and other damage so I'm guessing it won't be too soon, but he is still positive about doing the parts.

Glad to hear things are going ok for Malcolm, whatever time he needs is perfectly fine. He needs to let that leg heal up!

Thought I'd see if I could salvage the MGC grips. First, I gave them a very light sanding. I then added a little more grain with an old paint brush and black paint mixed with black india ink. I also filled in all the ridges with black. To warm them back up, I sprayed them with a thin mixture of Tamiya clear orange. I wanted to use red, but I was out.

Wood on left, plastic on right.

I'm still undecided on which grips to use. Wood or plastic...

...very nice.

your time in the basement has paid off!

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

Both look good. I guess the deciding factor for me would be, which are the closest shape to true mauser grips? I'm betting MGC.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

Lol! I wish I had a basement for all these TN tornadoes. The MGC's are a perfect fit. Almost a little too perfect if you know what I mean. If I go with wood, it will still be a lot of work because the screw pulls everything out of alignment. Remember, they are Denix, so they did have a screw on both sides, not one that joined the two.
