Most Accurate ANH Hero DL-44 files on Thingiverse?

Hello!

I was wondering which of the many DL-44 kits offered on Thingiverse would be the most accurate to the ANH Hero prop. I originally thought that using an airsoft gun and a few different conversion kits would be the way to go, since I wanted a bit more realistic weight than a fully 3D printed model. But since I can't seem to find a full size Mauser C96 airsoft gun anywhere for less than 80 to 100 USD, I thought this was the next best thing... So is anyone aware of a screen accurate option on Thingiverse? Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Ah shoot... Any possibility of bashing a few kits together to make a decently accurate version, or are they all pretty hopelessly inaccurate? Do you know if there there any free files elsewhere, or even reasonably priced files that would be more accurate?

I guess my level of accuracy at this point is getting as close as I can with limited funds. I'm trying to build my skills and I thought a 3D printed model would be fun to build and display.

When it comes to this topic I still have much to learn... I have rudimentary knowledge of all the bits and pieces and general knowledge of the gun, but I'm still learning about the finer details, so thanks for the input! Greatly appreciated by this newbie.

Well you are correct as my files are extremely accurate to the props themselves which is true but unfortunately I don’t sell the files. I figured that is what the OP was more interested in and in the wild accurate files just don’t exist. Again obviously it really depends on the individuals level of accuracy.

But here is where the OP should start. Anyone who wants to learn more about the ANH Hero itself should always start here IMHO..

I've seen your stuff on Etsy and your work looks impeccable!!! Hopefully someday I can make a version that looks even half as good. If you don't sell your files, do you know of anyone who does or have advice on how I could make my own files?

I guess I'm just interested in building a DL-44 Hero prop without spending a wild amount of money on a full metal replica or a pre-built model. I'm doing this mainly for the joy of building it and improving my knowledge of the prop. If I can get the various greeblies to look close to the original I'll be happy, especially for my first time.

The main inaccuracy that stuck out to me about the Thingiverse models was that a lot of them seemed to have a much thinner barrel than the bull barrel on the real prop. Most of them also didn't have the round nub on the bottom of the flash hider. And there's none of the serials numbers or lettering on the gun. There might be a lot of other things I'm missing, though.

Do you think it would be possible to use the main body of a Thingiverse DL-44 and then design more accurate versions of the various greeblies and details? Or maybe bash a few free kits together to get a better result?

Thanks for linking that thread, I've been looking through it and it's super interesting stuff!

There’s no short cuts unfortunately. Learn CAD and study the prop itself. Not other peoples replica mind you (most will be inaccurate or stylized) but the actual film prop itself. That thread I shared is really all you need to start your detective work. If u want to use some of those models off thingiverse as a starting point that’s fine but u will have to know CAD to redesign them to be how you want them. Again there’s no short cuts. Enjoy the process, be patient and most important be kind to yourself. It’s a long road you’re venturing down but a FUN one!

I'm taking a 3D printing and design class at a local University in a few months, so hopefully I can at least learn the basics of CAD in that! This forum is certainly helpful for finding pictures and discussions of the actual prop and I already have a lot more knowledge than I came in with. I don't know why I ever thought there would be an easy/shortcut-y way to do this, I should have known I'd end up chasing yet another prop-related rabbit trail

Thanks for your help! hopefully soon I will start the process of designing and building some DL-44s!
