ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies Found

Not much new to talk about from me; though I dug out one of DEC's old cast scope mounts out from my closet and tried to clean it up a little. After a little while with some needle files and some sandpaper I got it looking like this (I haven't worked on the scope rings yet).

Its definitly less rough than before, though I may just sell it later on since the lack of a dovetail really bugs me about it. We'll see what happens.

How did you achieve that bluing finish? Is it painted? It looks far too realistic!
Thank you. Ya it’s all painted. I prefer painting simply cause I like to cover up as much of the denix tells as possible. For the bluing it depends on the specific part ur referring to but it’s a combination of black, blue (different shads of each) paint with a touch of graphite powder for the shine.

Not too much new to talk about myself; though I did finally get around to Bluing and weathering the steel Flash Hider I had laying around.

I like the way it turned out, though I have three more laying around that are more accurate in terms of dimensions bit still are bare metal. Once I get some Aluminum Black compound I'll probably do the same and replace the one I have on right now.

Some other parts I also weathered a bit to make them look old and patina'd (bolt stop and saftey), and toying with the idea of doing the same to the hammer, internal frame and bolt. We'll see. (I also need to buy some more Tomtit Pushrods; my last pair broke on me.)

But anyways; here's a couple glam pics of my baby XD

I probably also should have done this before I blued the whole thing (doh!), but I went ahead and re-drilled the trigger hole for the Denix. It sits a good deal further back now; and looks much more accurate.

I'll fill in the gap in front of it with JB Weld so the trigger spring can rest on solid material; as its front arm is now floating just beyond where it originally held tension.

(It looks much messier than it actually is; I'll also fill the old hole with weld and file it smooth. Once painted it'll disappear like magic ;) )

(...Also, would anybody happen to have an extra spring for a Denix C96's hammer? Mine broke just as I was putting it in; and for some reason I dont seem to have a spare around. If not, does anybody make replacement springs out of better quality steel?)

Ask Field Marshall, he makes the full metal mauser replicas, perhaps you could ask him if he has extras parts!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone giving advice and helping people make their dream of building and/or owning one of these come true. I won't ever have the money or skills to make a legit 'for real' DL-44 but this is giving me a lot of ideas as far as making something out of crafting materials. It's nice having up close images of the real thing and replica props that may as well be the real thing. The RPF rocks.

Where is the best place to start looking for parts? I assume ebay, but is there somewhere else i should be looking?

Depends on what you're looking for and what you want to build. The canon ANH "Hero" DL-44 is the most recognizable variant, and is the topic of this particular thread (though it had since branched out given time and discoveries). For any build, you'll want to start by acquiring a base Mauser C96 replica; the cheapest of which is made by Denix. If you have more disposable income, than something like an MGC Mauser or the 1:1 Mauser Replicas might be a better/higher quality pick for you.

As far as the parts goes; there are several options. Dark Energy Creations, Todd's Costumes, Field Marshal, and more all produce replica parts of various quality and prices to go on the base gun to make it look like the Dl-44 of your choice. It's all up to you.

I'll share some more pictures of my Denix later on tonight; I've recently done a LOT of cranking on it to get it sitting right. Once it's done I'd like to be nearly passable for a real Mauser (externally); but I'm still a way's off. I also want to see if my local store has Zinc Spray so I don't have to keep using JB Weld to fill holes and add material in spots; so that'll be the next hurdle. :)

EDIT: My local shop did have some zink spray after all; I just tried filling the screw hole in the lower reciever. We'll see how it goes, though hopefully it plugs it!

Yes, that shot is flipped. You could also spot the officer's rank badge and the trooper helmets' comm boxes on the wrong sides. Some fan-edits have it flipped back.

Definitely not the original, in any aspect. Looks like it's a real Mauser and Hensoldt, though not the screen used ones. This one is a full on counterfeit.

No lump on the C96, scope mount is entirely wrong doesn't even have the dovetail, bull barrel is all wrong...etc..
As far as the guy claiming to be the original armorer that built it, that may be very possible that he is, but they also never mention Bapty at all. However, I doubt he would remember every little detail after all these years and mistaking that counterfeit for the real thing.

It's a shame people out there try to push replicas (an inaccurate one at that) as the real deal just to make a quick, dishonest $$$$.

Definitly doesn't seem to be the real Hero prop, though the scope looks legit. Could the base Mauser's upper be the actual one though? or is the entire rest just cobbled together of bad parts?
