ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies Found

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

You need to cut the hex bolt so it sits flush with the flash hider.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

Yeah... its on my to-do list. I'm debating cutting the barrel down more a little too.

Damn, I love this thread. Need a Mauser now...!

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

You guys can´t imagine how keen I am to pick up Davids parts from our local customs office and start my own builds (YEP, parts are not only for the Han ANH hero, but also for the "weirdo" ROTJ and one or two MerrSonn DL44´s :cool)

Keep the pics of your build coming...VERY inspiring!

Thanks again to kpax and deadbolt, as well as dmachinist for making this dream become reality. :):thumbsup

I was wondering if anyone knows if the front left top mount was left with no notch and a ding in it for screen use as per this pic

Main pic roughly color corrected and sharpened for weathering detail if anyone needs it.

Notice how the hole for that screw doesn't cut into the round portion of the scope ring very much like the other 3 holes. I think that chipped looking area might be due to the screw head hole/socket being drilled too close to the edge on the Scope ring, with the screw head socket possibly being tapered 45 degrees or so. It looks like that might be the reason for that odd shaped/tapered ding on the Mount ring.

It seems pretty likely that it was there onscreen as well. :thumbsup

Kurtboy's framegrabs prove it was firing blanks.

I've looked at the scene on BD frame by frame & he shoots ~ 3 shots b4 they start to add extra blaster bolts w/ no blank being fired.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

So what are you guys doing to replicate the mystery disc???

The MR EE has a machined spot... I wouldn't know how to do that with my tooling or I would. There's no way to chuck this up in the lathe for the tiny amount needed to make that a worthwhile proposition.

Thoughts?

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

I agree, due to the recent discussion I think we can be a bit more confident now that the blaster was indeed firing blanks.

But before the new photos and discussion we were basing off of the muzzle flash for our evidence that it was blank firing, and from what I can tell it's fairly evident that they were capable of inserting flashes into the ESB Bespin scene. So that's where we can't be overly sure about the ANH flashes since there's more than one possible explanation for them. It's very likely and logical that they're indeed real, but unfortunately the possibility is still there that they might not be.

..Sounds allot like some of the other mysteries involving this prop! :lol

Pat and I included some foil disk decals with the kits for anyone that wanted to use them. But that's one of those areas that still has allot of mystery behind what it actually is and/or how it came about. Still too many possibilities!

But the more common ideas behind it is it's either slightly milled in to the side of the Mauser, similar to how MR did it. Or it could be masked off into the paint that's on the Mauser and exposing an area of metal on the Mauser's frame. A few people also mentioned before that it might even be a greeblie that fell off after painting, rather than the disk being masked off intentionally.

if you look close, you can see a bit of the screw pocket like the other es, but there is a large flat edge running across the screw pocket wiping out most of the countersink in addition to the ding on the edge.

These were very rough parts and well worn and used. Those same cuts and dings are on the Sitting Target images of the scope mount as well. They are also on the B&W post production HERO pics too.

Grab a file and go to work to replicate that detail...I will.:)

...boy, customs is taking their time! Sorry Markus... It will be worth the wait I think.

Like Deadbolt said, you can use the Aluminum sticker disks as is, just add the center hole...or use it as a mask. refinish the frame and remove the mask and you should have a Mystery disk!

You can also get a good pair of metal machinist dividers and locate the area and use the dividers to scribe a line into the frame. Go over a few times. It will make a groove as deep as you like.

You can either paint or use sandpaper to remove the finish inside the circle.

The center hole can be marked or drilled to match the HERO.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

I'd always thought that the blaster Solo & Skywalker share on Bespin was a C-96 w/ blanks.

Either way:
  • I'm doing a ESB Solo blaster using an MGC C-96 w/ real scope, V8 & MR parts.
  • I'm doing a ESB Skywalker blaster using a Mauser C-96 w/ real scope, V-8 & MR parts.

I've only so much room!

It´s the one we talked about.
Even if you refer to the life firing version as the "Luke", the picture we looked over was of Han holding it, correct!?

Now there is ANOTHER blaster I HAVE to make :behave
The MGC-based Bespin blaster, Hans "Hoth" blaster and now the life firing Bespin DL44.

C´mon...give me a break!!!
I thought I´d be done with 3 variations of the ROTJ DL44 already :lol

Not on a lathe - i made it on my mill, using a rotary-table.

Picked up my parts this morning :)

Only had the chance to unpack a radial engine grill so far, but my hands are sweating already when thinking about the joy of unpacking the rest later today :cool

The main reason I hate Denix. The sight sphincter. :lol

I made mine look a bit better by squaring off that V notch. not perfect but better. You can also eliminate it if you give up the movement of the sight by just filing it flat and filling the pin slot. Put fake pins in the frame. Wont move but will look better.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

Wow a lot has been done since I was last here. I missed the first run but hopefully I will not miss the second run. I love the idea of the wood grips being made, been thinking about making my own. The possibility of a machined Mauser is really nice. For costuming at conventions I always thought one made out of black Delrin would be nice and a lot lighter than metal and easier to carry for a day at a convention.
