ANH C3PO expert?

So getting back to this I found a good image I could color correct reasonably well of the dark colored C3PO mask being fitted to Anthony Daniels by George Lucas.

The question to the C3PO experts is, is this mask black, dark green, or what, and why would that be, in other words what is it made of? I have an idea why but I'd like to see what C3PO experts think...you can also see it is much darker than the rear half.

And I always wondered about this dark mask when later on when Anthony Daniels is in front of the mirror being fitted with the entire costume that the mask is white or an off-white. Why the difference?

it looks like vac form heads, they might have used these to make adjustments to the head on how it attaches to the back side
and the colors look like the same as the trooper helmets

my 2cts.

The head on 3PO was defiently made of vac-formed plastic (from making of star wars) with a metal greeblie added into the back of the helmet. The arms and fingers were all machined out of aluminum. Feet were vac-formed. The rest of the suit was made out of fiberglass.

Also the black could just be the base coat that the vac-platers put down before putting in the chamber.

Interesting information. I always thought that it was fiberglass like ESB style helmets (since the details are damn sharp for vacuum formed parts).

I'm really curious to know how do they did for the rear half (the arch with the rectangular holes)

Probably the same way as the kits out there. The vents are a different part that's glued/bondoed onto the back section.

I never heard that the ESB helmets were redone in fiberglass. Everything I've found has said that the ESB suits were modifiyed ANH armor. Which is why nothing exists from ANH for 3PO.

I dont know much, but my 3p0 suit was pulled off an original ANH suit. It's not a disney, TK rework, or any of that mumbo jumbo.

FWIW.

How do you know yours is off an "ANH" suit? It was my understanding that the same suit was used throught the OT (with parts replaced/repaired) - Is yours from molds that were used to make the Original ANH suit? How can you know?

Molds of the OT suit were also made to produce the Star Tours animatronic and the Don Post statue (I would imagine) - Perhaps it could be from one of those?

Is it one of these? (I heard these were from molds made for Disney)

Here is some info we had stitting around on the c3pobuilders forum:

I have some background info on the original ANH costume if anyones interested. As some of you may know I've been trying to get round some of the original prop makers here in the UK and have met John Mollo (Costume Director), Brian Muir (Vader sculpt and part 3po) and Andrew Ainsworth (Stormtroopers, TIE's etc.) so far.

For 3po, Brian Muir was the most useful as he worked on the original 3po clay sculpt after Liz Moore left (I think to go and work on A Bridge too Far). Brian took Liz’s initial sculpt and split it up into sections and then add the detailing. He told me that there was a lot of “engineering” work required on it such that it could be worn as well as the additional detailing”. He said that some of this was done in association with another 3rd party company (possibly Norank?).

I got the impression from Brian it was mostly fiberglass (although he wasnt involved in the FG stage, just sculpting and assembly) although Andrew Ainsworth THOUGHT it could have been vac-pulled, with certain sections back filled with FG for strength.

I had at one stage a 3po lower leg (calf) and foot section, possibly from the ESB Garbage scene which WAS FG.

Hope its of some use

Cheers

Hi,

I've just reread my post and want to clalify that it wasnt my 3po leg but a friends, however I was absolutely sure it was genuine.

I dont know how the leg pivoted as it was only the calf section (with a lot of electronics) which we think was used in the Ugnaut trash scene with Chewy. The owner is a fellow prop-collector so I'll ask him if he's prepared to post some pics

Looking at it it looked to me like the original 3po feet were cast off something like a deck shoe or green-flash plimsole as the edges around the feet were a real give-away.

Cheers

I've heard that as the 3PO hands were such a tight fit on Anthony they had to be warmed up to give them enough flexiblity to put on, and on one occasion he burnt his hand when they got a little too hot!

I imagine this refers to post-ANH 3PO hands - After ANH, I understand the shorts, shoes and feet were replaced with 'rubber' versions.

Quote from Don in previous tread (http://www.therpf.com/f9/don-post-c-3po-38766/):

"All the arms for all the suits were aluminum. The fingers of the ANH suit were brass (VERY heavy), and the trunks of that suit were vacuum formed plastic. There were other minor details, like the suit was bolted together with screws for ANH, whereas they used quarter-turn Dzus connectors for ESB.
To the best of my knowledge, the suits were remade for ESB, probably using the original parts or molds as a starting point. No new suits were made for any other remaining sequels...with the exception of TC-14 from Ep1. That was a suit we made for personal appearances to fit Grant (Mythbusters) Imahara, and was used quickly for TC-14. It was being vacuum-metalized at the time and they wanted a chrome droid. Since they weren't done with the process, we told them to hold off with the top gold coat, and shipped it as chrome. It appeared briefly in the background somewhere painted red, then was eventually restored to gold and used for appearances. The Ep2 "Patchwork" suit was an ESB one (we only painted one complete suit, plus a couple additonal parts here and there), as were the two gold Ep3 suits--one of which is part of the Science Museum exhibit that started in Boston.

The Don Post statue was molded from an ESB suit, I believe...though you guys know the nuances of these things far better then I...you tell me..."

Sorry for the back-to-back posts, hope this all helps you out a little though!

What a HACK Fiber glassing job THAT is! Good GOD!!
Whoever did that should be ASHAMED of themselves!!!
What is that?? Brush Marks? Did someone BRUSH primer that should have been SPRAYED.
Idiot.

You should SUE whoever made that for treatment for your tennis elbow you will get from sanding out all those brush marks.

At least you have a copy of the NICEST C3PO suit out there.
NOTHING compares to that set in terms of detail or CLOSENESS to the real thing.

Oh....wait....I made that...

WHAT an OUTSTANDINGLY fine example of SUPERIOR fiberglassing work!!!

So that original C3PO head that Anthony Daniels has in his possession, from which film is it? ESB? For whatever film it came from, how many heads were made for that film?

thanks...

there is NO "chris's helmet" :lol

i wish you would stop calling it that.

its a zorg head which was recast by mardon and chris

I know because I know the lineage of my suit. It is not from a don post or a disney suit. The TK409 is from Mardon which started out as one of those. My suit was made well before those guys even came on the scene. I cant say anymore without risking Bothan lives. :confused

Plus, as zorg has said, the mardon/chris head is a recast of his (which is a no no last time I checked). I believe zorg's head is a copy of a screen used ROTJ, zorg correct me if I am incorrect. Mine came from a ANH 3p0. The differences were fairly obvious.

Nuff said.

Confirmed RotJ because of the matched scuffs on the cheeks and other details. Seen in the Jabba Sail Barge scenes.

Thanks for the link Nairod...

Interesting back-story on the suit castings out there...

Thanks for the confirmation on Tony's C3PO, Carsten...
