Ancient Elder Bio ~ Bio Sculpt, Mold and Cast project.

FYI, this thread is now 1 of my sources of reference for my indie movie, I'm either going to do exactly what you have for my Predator's helmet and set props, or something similar, depending on how my budget handles it.

I really appreciate this dude! If I end up using the same techniques u did, I'll be sure to credit you!

Wow. Thanks for the credits: U may use my real name: Mike Loh a.k.a Uratz. If you need any other help u can email me personally. I'll do what I can being half way around the world. :)

I appreciate it!

I need ALL the help I can get, no matter where it's from.

Sides ur Mask tutorial gives me the option of having multiple helmets, in case something goes wrong on set. The last thing I want is only 1 day to film in 1 place, and the helmet gets damaged and theres no way to fix it in time.

uratz, seems i'm not the only one inspired by your tuts. again great job on the bio, and would this be considered one of the lost ones bio, since it's barely on screen no time, just wandering . anyways, this thursday i hope to get my plaster cloth in, and start with the armature covering, and then maybe i'll start on bane's bio! i'll keep my thread updated when i can. and thanks again for the inspiration. your tutorial has made things alot easier to get around. peace to you man.

Big thanks for the support. I've always wanted to make a Bio and also inspired by guys like Biohunter76 and the thing is I couldn't find any tutorial with details on how to mold and sculpt even on this site. Unfortunately the info was scattered so I decided to learn everything about sculpt/mold/casting myself in addition to this blogsite. Well after months of videos, featurettes and internet research I gathered enough knowledge and supplies to jump into it. I am actually a newbie myself to all this. I couldn't even say that I am a great sculptor. I just had gone to art school have a great love for the arts and movie FX.

Now I just put everything I've learned and update it with my progress hopefully I can finish sculpting it soon and start the making molds which will be Part 2 of this Huntorial. Its ironic that I was the one who wanted to look for a huntorial like mine and end up being the guy who makes it. :) Keep touch

Amazing work so far! You have one heck of a level of discipline and talent!

Oh, and I think the asymetrical look is actually pretty cool.

Desire is the Motivation for Discipline. When we want to do something so badly even if a daytime job and a part time job takes time away from what we love to do, and still manage to find the time to do it, then it passion! I got a chance to do a mural project over the next few weekends which will take time and energy away from what I want to do which is sculpt. But I need the money. Anyway its all about art ! :)

Mini Update: Trilobyte Armor Detail

The back part is done, still need to further detail it and make every ridge even. The entire Bio is almost there. Now just need to keep refining it and perfecting it. Making sure it as symetrical as possible then when thats achieved will use 75% alcohol to smooth out the surface and then add stone texture to the surface. Will be creating a special tool for that in the next post. Stay Tuned.

DUDE! You have done one helluva job one this Bio...not many people take the time to perfect it until it looks as perfect as possible. Keep at er and I'll keep watching...

Well Its a good and bad thing. I think most professionals would've been done by now. I'm less experienced so there's more that I need to do to perfect it. If you know what you're doing you'll take less time to "finish." Since I'm not a experienced sculptor there's much I need to learn and I realized I made a lot of mistakes and miss a few things I should've caught (e.g. the underform was not symmetrical so anything on top will have to compensate more for the asymmetry or fix the underform first).

But there was no way for me to know it until I get to this stage. It's all trial and error. So for others who want to be a bold sculptor, you just need to have faith and jump into it. The more we sculpt the better we get right? Oh yeah having the Patience of a Saint will help also. Otherwise if you lose it you may end up chucking the whole thing wasting more time and clay, rather than scraping off :) and re modelling.

Update:

Is an Artwork can ever be said to be "finished"? To most artists it can never be. But for me "Yeah It's finished." Its not perfect but at some point you just gotta make that judgement call. Its done and I'm moving on to the molding stage, which will risk everything on the line. I took thousands of shots of this finished stage for my own record.

The trilobite stone dimples are added meticulously. The side cheeks have a slightly more "rocky" texture even though it has a similar dimple texture. I had to make my own rounded rivet looking things on the top forehead centerline. Those were cast in resin using clay push mold(no time to make silicone molds for small things & its a waste of good silicone). The object used for the little round rivets was a plastic eye of a plush toy. It was the right size and roundedness so I took advantage of it. Haha

Though I used Biohunter's sculpt for ref (thanks a bunch man for the inspiration) I applied my own touch to minor details such as the cheek razor pattern, overall interpretation of a Ancient Elder style, surface textures are different obvioulsy- my artistic license. I also made the surface of the sculpt to have metallic scratch patterns (which can be seen clearer once painted) along with hammered crater look.... blah blah blah.

OK Enough of me blabbing, on to the pictures! :)

Awesome job all along dude, it looks perfect, you really can be proud of the result!!
Hope the molding/casting process goes well!

Thanks for the kind comments. Gonna mold it tomorrow. Starting with Clay Bed and then make the mother mold first, then...? Better that I show you after I finished it.

Yup, noticed that. Fixed up a few things as we speak. Some things you don't see until you take pics and really analyse it. I'm passing this sculpt off as an "organic" bio rather than a "machine perfect" one.

I've always wondered with the poor vision of Predators seeing the entire world in red monotones and then blue/black hues with themal graphic vision how do they make machined equipment so good. They must have some human slaves tucked in somewhere B)
