AMT Slave One WIP

Thank you LrdSatyr8 and DS Op. I wanted to do something different than lighting the engines and cockpit. I also didn't like the stand that comes with the kit so I started thinking of different ways to display this thing. I also wanted to use the mini HIC so this seemed like the best way to go.

I think the platform on Bespin would be your best bet bro... You could also light it too! :)

Thank you EddieL! Katsu-san, sounds like both of us started off the same way.:lol

Christrom, your walkers are a good example of how a little weathering goes a long way. When I weathered the first walker I built, I thought I did a great job, until I took another look at it a couple of days later. It looked like it won a mud wrestling match.

LrdSatyr8, thanks for the suggestions on the windshield. Future Floor Wax is a must but I didn't think about the restoration kits. That windshield has some crazy distortion that does take work to remove. However, a couple of weeks ago I took out my windshield and was quite shocked. I must have set something heavy on it because it now looks like this...

I'm bummed out but I'll still finish the rest of the ship. I was thinking of putting it back together, smoothing it out then trying to cast it in clear resin. But that will come later.

I've been following your thread as one of my inspirations to get back into modelling. This afternoon I was doing a quick inventory of a set of boxes, and came across part of the Slave One. A bit of further digging and I found an unblemished canopy. Please PM me and I'll get it posted off to you.

Randy-san, your personality and great work make this happen. I salute vectorzero.
Both of you are great guy. I'm feeling so good to be in this forum.

I have some updates to post and want to thank everyone for helping me along the way. Everyone's comments and suggestions have been very helpful. And thanks to Masterjedi322 for helping me out with the colors.

Prior to receiving vectorzero's offer of the canopy, Metallboy sent me a PM offering one of his that he scratch built. I want to thank these two greatly for helping me with this. I had agreed to his generous offer and he ended up sending me two of them. One I used to practice on and one for the build. The clear plastic has some little imperfections but I think it looks great. Why should the canopy on the Slave 1 be so flawless and clean while the rest of the ship is so weathered? I think the canopies that Metallboy made are very much worthy of the Slave . First are the pictures of the canopies as they arrived.

They needed a little trimming and some light sanding. I didn't have any very fine sandpaper so I used toothpaste instead which turned out to work better than I thought.

Then some Future magic.

I tried out Micro Kristal Klear on this to attach the canopy. I never used this before but from what I read, it shrinks a little when it dries so I added quite a bit at first with a tooth pick. It looks like standard white glue but it dries very clear.

I let that dry overnight then took the tape off and added Kristal Klear in the areas that were covered by the tape.

I'm very happy with these results. Early on when I started this, I was wondering how I was going to add some weathering to the canopy but this has the right look that I wanted. It looks a lot better in person than what's showing up here. Eventually I will want to build a base for this of docking bay 94 with Jabba waiting for Boba to unload his precious cargo.

Thanks for looking.

Wow, I really admire your dedication and attention to detail. Of course, this is coming from a person who would barely have had the patience to open the box in the first place, so take my compliment for what it's worth!

The only thing this model is missing *ahem*:

That's looking so so so good; really can't wait to see you start bay 94! By the way, what are the canopies made from/ how were they made, just out of (relevant to my build) curiosity?

Thank you Ze0ro, Haystack Hair and Katsu-san! Here’s a link to what Metallboy had posted, http://www.therpf.com/f11/amt-slave-one-wip-146130/index9.html#post2781415 I believe they are vacuformed but I don’t know the source of the plastic. They are thin but not too weak. I saw what happened to your canopy Haystack Hair and I feel your pain.:cry Looks like you made a very nice plug to vacuform or to push trough heated plastic. This was a fun challenge to do and someday I will want to work on the base. I have some updates to post on my Duel truck thread then I’m going to be busy for a couple of weeks doing something I’m very excited about. I’ll be posting that info on the other thread, hopefully tonight.

Randy the Slave 1 looks amazing! I'm honored to have helped you in the completion on this masterpiece. I see what you mean by the canopies weathered look and indeed it makes sense to have it look that way. Your next idea on the Docking Bay platform sounds great! it would be another part of movie history we would love to visualize.. As of the material for the canopies? they were made from clear sheets of model making canopies for model Jets wich i got from an old hobby store. The heat source I used to mold them was just simply a candle? This is the technique old timers used before any home made vacuforming mini tables were considered...Anyway congrats on the completion of this amazing model...

Randy... I'm so happy to see you get the whole canopy problem fixed and thanks go out to Matelboy for his contribution. You've done an amazing job on this kit and I for one am completely jealous. There's no way I could even come close to the level of detail you put into this one but am glad I was able to contribute a little! :) Again... awesome job and am glad to see she's finished!
