First time posting a build on here. This will be of the nebula class starship.
I’m going to try and match the look of the nebula class from its appearances as the U.S.S. Sutherland in TNG and the U.S.S. Prometheus in DS9.
It will be finished as the U.S.S. Sutherland.
Some of this will be a bit of a guess work as the photos out there aren’t the highest quality of the miniature in this time period (completely understandable for cameras of the time). Lots of nice photos of the filming miniature exist after it’s refurbishment for Generations as the U.S.S. Farragut, but it gained a completely different paint scheme and details, it also later gained updated pennants for its appearance in the updated DS9 title sequence as the U.S.S. Leeds.
This build will utilise the old DLM conversion kit (RIP Don), which looks like is now back from lake monster details which is nice to see.
I’ve begun putty work on the AMT saucer by removing the inset windows and edge windows on the lower saucer and the rows of windows on the outer section of the top saucer. Although you will see images of the nebula class with these windows, these are unique to the CGI version.
Really, I should alter the the thickness of the saucer edge, it was increased in height for various reasons, but I’ve always found the neck joint on the AMT enterprise kit a source of problems and I don’t want to try and mess around with the resin neck connection to space that out to match.
Although the actual filming miniature does have the same raised hull plating as the 4 foot Enterprise D miniature (as it utilized the same moulds) I’m going to sand this off on the kit as I think it will make it easier to mask the Aztec pattern, it would have been too hard for me to remove the windows and leave that detail in place and it’s just lines rather than actual raised plate detail. Also, the lower half of the DJM secondary hull does not have this detail anyway, so it will all match.
I will take some artistic license such as adding some detail to the deflector dish lighting and adding some flashing nav lights to match the Enterprise D, which would make sense in universe that they were the same.
The first big challenge is going to be infilling the saucer impulse engines, plan is to fill them from parts form the front of the saucer from an old AMT Enterprise D kit I have.
This is going to be a slow build, as I don’t get much free time, but thought I would try and log as it may be of interest to others, also please excuse all the info, just added it to provide some context for those interested.
