AA / Diamond Select TOS Phaser and Comm; how accurate?

I was recently in a comic shop, and they had a Diamond Select Phaser and Communicator two pack. They were discounted since the box was damaged. I didn't buy it, I think I might have to get my wife to go get it now...as a early b-day present to myself.

How accurate are they? Can they be easily modded, if not? Anyone have any comparison shots?

They were modelled after the HMS TOS phaser used in DS9, Trials and Tribbleations. They were also used in raw form on Enterprise. So to that they are 100% accurate. The comm isn't bad depending on whch version you get. The earlier ones had metal lids, some of the newer ones are plastic!!!! Yuck!

I like them. You can really spruce them up!

They can and have been modded extensively (see the Archives for AA Phaser) and IMHO out of the package for me, they are fabulous and I'd say 85%+ accurate.

Cheap, fun and accurate enough for me !

The plastic lidded ones I have seen are only through major toy outlets like TRU. The metal ones are available thru comic shops and online retailers like Entertainment Earth, etc. and eVilBay.

The Communicator is modeled after the Master Replicas communicator, though, so it has a fat bottom. But that was used in "A Mirror, Darkly" so technically its "screen accurate" too! They are definitely worth the price.

Awesome info. Thanks all. I guess I will have to talk my wife into going to the comic shop to grab them for me. :)

Re: Diamond Select TOS Phaser and Comm; how accurate?

These AA (and later DST) "Trek Tek" toys are all a blast to play with out of the box, and are reasonably accurate (certainly more accurate than any previous toy versions) if not strictly as correct as we "prop collectors" would want.

It's fantastic though that these things exist and you can buy 'em. Not a dud among 'em! :)

Pick up the TOS tricorder too, you'll be glad you did. ;)

I saw that too, but I'm on a tight budget at the moment.

I plan on picking one up eventually, but do have the phaser and comm. As others have said, they're great for the price. However, I've been told the earlier models are better as they were made from a better plastic and/or paint. I know there is some light bleed on my phaser.

Cheers

My wife is en route to the comic shop now! yay! :lol I won't have them until she gets back in a few weeks (she is interning in FL right now) though.

Tell her to ship them to you. :lol

Re: Diamond Select TOS Phaser and Comm; how accurate?

My wife got back last night!

I probably should have looked closer at them when I was in FL at that comic shop. The guy did say something about the box being damaged, but taking them out of the box, it looks like they were taken apart.

The back end of Phaser1 won't stay clipped in Phaser 2. There is also a part loose in Phaser 1 (I took it apart, but couldn't fix it).

I guess for $20, I can't complain too much.

Anyone here offer upgrade kits?
