1/24 Rogue One U-wing

Can I ask what facebook page is this "blowing up" on? I have looked on the RPF one but could not find it. I was going to order one but I want to see how this plays out and what Randy's response is.

Thanks

I am not on FB, but I am told it’s the Studio Scale Modeler’s society. Maybe Ben can chime in here and confirm.

I’ve seen some screenshots of it, and apparently I am not the only one with issues with this kit. I am told that new wings will be designed and sent out as replacements.

The problem with the bubbles and pinholes is that the wings, and the hull, are too large to be pressure cast.
I think my hull is probably workable, but I’m not overly thrilled with the wings. I hope Randy comes through with replacement wings, I really like this model, but some parts of it are VERY sub-par. I’d hate to have to scratch build wings after spending a decent chunk of money on this kit.

I’ve never had issues with the resin kits I’ve built before. I guess I’ve been spoiled with the quality of Mike Salzo’s mold and cast work.

The thing that really concerns me is that this looks like really crappy work that was then attempted to be covered up. A missed flaws is one thing but this really bast casting looks to have been filled, sanded, and then covered with primer as apposed to simply making better castings.

Am I seeing the pics right because that is what it looks like to me? I am not an expert so maybe I am not seeing it correctly.

Well, I think that’s pretty much what it is... Crappy casting work on the wings anyway, that was ‘covered up’ with a thick coat of primer.
The hull pieces are useable, they’ll take a but of sanding and filling, but they are workable.
The wings look like crap. I hope Randy comes through with replacements.

Its a mess. I did my part. I posted a buyer beware and it warrants it. This stuff could be pressure cast. Just needs a bigger booth built to accommodate its size. Which should have been figured into the cost of the kit....but wtf do I know right?

The other problem with these wings is that they are heavy, and they WILL sag quite a bit when in the rear position.
This will put a LOT of stress on the pivot joint, and the fuselage. It may even snap the pivot joint at the fuse.

I’m thinking of scratch building a set of wings.
From my RC aircraft days, we built a lot of wings out of balsa wood.
My current thought process is to construct a set of ‘built up’ wings out of balsa, and fiberglass them with a lightweight fiberglass cloth. This should keep the weight off of them. I am going to reinforce the pivot area and the area up to the landing gear with carbon fiber plate (which I happen to have laying around the shop). This will make the wings light, and strong.

I welcome ANY suggestions and thoughts.

Any update? Mine is on the way. I know it may need some work but I just love the U wing and was so excited Randy made this as there was not much for U wings. I know it may need some fixing but I am still super psyched.

No updates yet.
Work has been keeping me on the road and I have to get my Red2 x-wing in primer so Ben can paint it.

Probably in the next couple of weeks I’ll get busy on it. I did make some templates for new wings....

I need something to paint send me money and models lol

You are gonna have lots to do as soon as I take care of a few minor things:

Move the family to our new house, close out the old rental, and get settled,

find a new job, possibly a new career,

save up some money,

finish the Deago Falcon so it's ready to paint,

obtain and build the Y wing,

That's all. Just a few things and then you will have lots to paint.

um...best of luck with that. Painters need paint work now lol not later ;) I cant call the power company and tell them what you said lol

My wife keeps insisting that props are second to power, food, fuel, heat, etc. She and I just can't agree on some things.:(

I certainly hope you are still offering services when I can afford it.

Your work is truly amazing and your prices are very reasonable.

Sometimes wives just don't understand priorities. ;)

Love the U-wing and am looking forward to more progress.
