Y-Wing Scratch Build - 1/18th Scale

Hey RPF'ers

So I have my Hasbro X-Wing Toy Converted and I thought it would be cool to have a Y-Wing to go beside it.

The Hasbro is about 1/18 but I'm not sure how big to make the Y-Wing so it compliments the X-Wing in size.

The TIE pilot looks about right if he was driving the X Wing, so I think that would be a good scale to make the Y Wing, but that would seem to make it very large, maybe too long in comparison as the cockpit of the Y-Wing looks very small. The same pilot of an X Wing wouldn't fit inside a Y-Wing....??

The fuselage seems to be about the same length plus the Y-Wing rails.....??

There has been some discussion about the actual length of the X and Y wings. Every where I look, official and otherwise, say the X is 12.5 metres long and the Y, 16.24 metres. But if so that makes the Hasbro X-wing about 1:17 rather than 1:18. So, according to Pythagoras, the Y-Wing at that scale should be 0.957 metres or about 37.7 inches long.

But of course...those are "alleged" lengths.

Yep, scales up to be 930mm Which is pretty HUGE really  .....and close enough to be 1/18th scale

Now I just gotta build the bad boy:lol:....Don't have no fancy 3D printer and I won't spend 8 years collecting the screen accurate greeblies from lots of kits to bash it together, they wouldn't be 1/18th anyway... Some scale accuracy and bits and pieces....;)

At least with the Hasbro Toy, I had the fuselage and scratch built the rest...but for this it's all scratch baby...!!

Slow going as life gets in the way.... ;)

Going to test foam for the fuselage body, might not be the best material, but we'll see. Foam PVC or HIPS for the canopy...I think.....

Nothing wrong with foam for the base shape, you can cut it where you need to then add a layer of fibreglass.
Seems you're planning this way anyway to have the spine run right up into the fuselage.

Cheers,
Josh

Yep, looks like a YWing...question: will the cockpit be replaced by a better one?
What are saying...?...that its not very good...???:p

I'm just testing everything out, not sure about the foam or the foamboard instead of HIPS. The canopy is a bit tall, but the slim ones look too short and it's not finished. Not going for serious accuracy, just going to build something that is close enough to go with my 1/18 X Wing.

I thought about buying a 3D printer and that would make the build relatively easy, but I like scratching around in the dirt when it comes to building stuff

I used HIP before and I equate it with Balsa...not the finish I was expecting on your model:unsure: Maybe you could clad it with the tinniest plastic sheet to have a better finish. ;) But, it's your build and if you're fine with that cockpit...that's what matter in the end.

Amazing what a coat of paint does....! Just playing around with wash, a bit heavy, might tone it back;) Don't have a 3D printer and kit bashing is a struggle because of the scale 1/18...so just freestyling my own interpretation.....not super accurate to anything, but it works for me....!! Pipes will get a copper coat.
