1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

How will you be moving these things? U-Haul? I hired some guys to move my time machine once and while they didn't say much to me they all took turns having their picture taken posing next to it. I took it as a compliment!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Had to google X-wing and snowspeeder, kinda bad that I know that little about Star Wars..

X-wing, X-wing! :D

Chris Lee and I touched on this just a few weeks ago. We're thinking a UHaul is probably the best bet to fit and transport everything in one shot. Since the cockpit comes apart there will be no need for movers. Just have to make sure there is enough padding and tie downs.

Whenever folks want to take pics with your creation - that's always a compliment! :)

X-Wing, huh? I've always wanted to build 1/6th scale XW. It would be fun... :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

I have been working ALL morning getting this cockpit back together and I've been able to get past the warping issue. I just hope it doesn't rear it ugly head at the Makers Faire! Anywho... I took a break from the heat and designed some vertical gauge faces to fill the plastic "greeblies" I found at the improvement store. These are NOT screen accurate but I think they work just the same. I'm going to print them on nicer photo quality paper before the show.

Mount these in place with hex screws

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Well... It may not look like much but I have done A TON of work on the cockpit...

After struggling with the platforms I was able align everything and bolt the problem areas together. I attached the front window arch
20130907_132505_zps099bb466.jpg

Instead of backlighting the barlight I decided to paint them white. There just isn't enough time between now and the show.
20130907_132510_zps61192b30.jpg

a few greeblies plus the barlights. They will be a gloss white
20130907_153328_zps710e83a8.jpg

This is where we are... :) Once I get the greeblies situated for the panel behind Chewie, I can bolt the rest of the panels together and begin measuring the canopy arch and horizontal beams!

Hi Gang,

I finished the gauge faces... Feel free to use them :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Printed out the gauge faces on high gloss photo paper...

I'm happy with it :)

I'm off to the art supply store to pick up some mold making material to create the slider bases and then this panel will be finished!

As always... Stay Tuned!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Well... the mold worked but there was a slight problem...

As always I created the box to create the mold
20130907_185722_zps103a9d13.jpg

Once the mold cured I heated the mold, prepped it with baby powder and poured the resin

20130907_232949_zps41ff808d.jpg

Well... when I pulled the casting from the mold the center tore off the mold

UGH
20130908_063948_zps9390373a.jpg

So now the question is... do I 1) try to make a NEW piece out of balsa wood, make a new mold hoping the solve the problem, 2) try to salvage / modify the original 3D print to make a new mold, 3) go back with the original idea I had or 4) try to modify the original pieces and make a new mold? UGH...
20130908_064043_zps5ab6fd57.jpg

Also... I think the gauges are a bit overkill. The graphic artist in me got a little carried away with the design. I'm going to redesign the vertical gauges and keep them simple.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Well... the new gauges have been printed. I think these are much better and much more simple.

Also, after thinking about the slider base I decided to modify the original version. The bulk of it was already done so I decided to add a simple balsa top giving the appearance of depth...

Gauges - who knows... maybe I'll change them again :)

As you can see the 3D print has a MUCH lower profile than the one I originally created. This should make it much easier for molding

I've added a little filler and waiting for it to dry - I'll set in the sun to help speed it up!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

While I agree that the other gauges might have been a bit much, I did like the Aurebesh. I have to ask though, what exactly IS an Alluvial Damper?
Also, the "I have no idea what this gauge does" made me chuckle.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Looking good, it's always a joy to see the progress on this build! :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Have you thought about filling in the printed slider piece so the section that is giving you issues isn't as deep? It might help when removing from your mold. Also, Have you tried using a spray mold release? (I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to making or using molds. Just throwing some ideas out there)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

It is REALLY hot today and humid so I decided to jump in and... After watching Adam Savage's quick tutorial on how to weather large objects, I decided to go for it! Thanks, Mr. Savage!!!!

The first thing I did was FINALLY get the connecting rod through the main body of the quad to mount through the platform. This was NOT easy. Luckily I had a drill bit long enough but it was pretty worn out. When I finally drilled through to the other side of the main body... well... let's just say I had to pour some water into the hole (it was smoking pretty badly). The idea is that this will keep the body from tilting forward when the barrels are added and get rid of that ugly vertical support bar.
20130908_133101_zps1ffb073a.jpg

I then dressed it with two phone cords
20130908_133056_zps060f4216.jpg

And added a phone mounting plate on the platform

20130908_135420_zps99b4deef.jpg

I then picked up some acrylic paints (blacks and two browns) from the art supply store and...

I basically used VERY watered down paint(s) and dropped it in misc areas - focusing on the pipes
20130908_141321_zps4730125e.jpg

I then used a cloth to pick up a majority of the paint which left various highlights... And on and on and on

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Well... I didn't get to the canopy... ugh... Deciding to paint the lightbars kept me from putting the panels back together. There's still a lot of sanding to do along with prime/paint. But, I did weather the quad and I'm closer to finishing the slider bases. :)

I managed to salvage the cast I made of the slider base. You can see the difference between the casting and the new slider I've created (primed)

I'm going to try to make a mold this evening of the slider base - it all depends on the primer/sanding/filling... but now... Football! :)
