It's even easier to see how big the turret gun is outside, just amazing, looks like a huge high-quality nerf prop! :)

Awesome! What do the neighbors think?

Thanks Stormy! The next door neighbors loved it and the kids were always over but they moved... Most of the others just kinda stare and drive REEEAAALLLY slow as they go by...

Hey Kev,

THANKS! I've been meaning to put a Coke can next to it to show how big the quad is. A nerf prop? How cool would that be!

I like the look of that thing. What caliber is it?

Thanks... I would probably guess... 100 cal? I'm just tossing a number out there...

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Well... she's all painted! I have to admit I LOVED the look of the black primer. I'm not really sure how this turned out. I'm not unhappy with it. What do you guys think?

Barrels - these tipped over twice during paint

Next stop... weathering! Do I dare try??????

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

OK GANG

I need some SERIOUS guidance on how to weather the quad without going overboard or worse... make it look like I have NO idea what I'm doing (which I've been able to hide pretty well)... I'm going to try the Windex idea and see what happens. But what is a good paint solution to mix?

When I look at this pic I can see where the designers just spilled whatever color they used and let it drip...

Man... I wish I knew what they used to make these things...

Any ideas?

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

I'm no expert, but I usually wash things like that with strait black. If you use too light a color once you mix it with the water/Windex it won't show up. What I would probably do is do a black wash, then a blue wash, then a brown wash. It's a good idea to do that with it fully assembled. If you do individual parts it can look weird put all together. I mean in real life the gun is all together when it gets battered and used.

After that I would dry brush a metallic color. Before the dry brushing is dry wipe it up with a clean cloth.

The washes made it look dirty or oily. The dry brush looks like metal peaking through on worn paint metal pieces.

That's just my opinion, and I'm sure you'll get plenty of advice. Great work.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Just take some black or gun metal spray paint and spray it into a small bowl, then thin it with acetone until it's watery. Then take a paper towel, soak it and just rub it into the cracks, drizzle it with a Q-tip, etc. Then wipe off the excess. That's what I did when weathering the R2 I used to have.

Hi Gang,

Here she is with the lower barrels in place and out of the sun. I also added a few concept ideas for details.

Still need to finish the vertical support bar

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

I just thought of an idea that I have no idea if it would work.
Mix a concoction of dark colors and substances (coffee, grey water-based paint, etc). Mix it into large cups, or even in a bucket. Then splash it over every surface of the cannon. Then, either try to wipe it all off with a towel, or try to spray it off with a hose. Whatever remains should theoretically look like weathering. You should test it on something first.

Hey Red,

This whole project has been based on that EXACT concept and execution! ;)

Taking everybody's guidance into account - I'm going to start simple. I'm going to mix 95% water to 5% paint and wash over the entire quad allowing the paint to seep into all the cracks and crevices - being careful not to create too many drips onto the platform. I'll then dab dry with a cloth. If all goes well, I will change the percentage of water/paint until I get the perfect balance.

I'll then cover the quad base and let the quad gun itself have it with all the drips and "oil" stains... :) I've heard old coffee is a wonderful stain as well.

It's going to rain all day today but I'm ok with that. It's been a great three days and I've got alot done. Time for a little break. :)

Sofaking will be future plans/features for motorized versions of the quad lasers?

Hi A,

I'm not sure what Chris Lee has planned - I would love to see a motorized version of the quad in action! That would be amazing. The one I'm building is only a static version. But we can still make "pew pew pew pew" sounds ;)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

When inspired... it's VERY difficult to sit still and not do anything especially when I'm SO close to finishing the quad. I decided to move forward with the design plans I had for the platform. I think it helps tie in with the MF but also add more depth and visual interest.

I printed 4 different black triangles, cut them out and placed them on the barrel. I think I like 3 or 4 best

1 - too big
20130902_123147_zpsb6bfcd2a.jpg

2 - Nice but still a little big
20130902_123211_zps5de8168b.jpg

3 - I like it.
20130902_123230_zps8a87070c.jpg

4 - a bit small but it also works
20130902_123258_zps2a0b5ff7.jpg

I also started marking the lines for the painted panels

I'm going to mix the primer and the body color I have together - this will allow me to mix and come up with a workable color. I'm going to try dry brushing the panels to see what happens.

Stay Tuned!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

One step closer...

I added padding to the barrel support arms - the paint was chipping away
20130902_142834_zpsc1a8f618.jpg

The first items to be painted were the barrels. I added the triangle and two stripes. Nothing fancy or showy... But enough to add some visual interest

20130902_131729_zpse6de2ab3.jpg

Horrible pic - sorry
20130902_144223_zps4292cb19.jpg

It was then time to move to the platform... Once I made all my pencil marks I taped everything to be painted
20130902_133636_zpscdfe081d.jpg

20130902_133641_zps428e9863.jpg

I painted the areas by tapping the brush up and down as to not create brush strokes
20130902_134426_zps8955eb60.jpg

I repeated this process all the way around the platform
20130902_134440_zps14a50eb1.jpg

Once the paint had dried I removed all the tape. The edges are not perfect helping with the aged and weathered look
20130902_140312_zps8fabdc09.jpg

20130902_140337_zpsd5dc693a.jpg

I then moved on to the piping...

Hi J,

THANKS for the input! I've received nothing but great advice so far - all the ideas sound great and I know will probably work. They only thing I don't have is a second shot. Whatever I do... I have one shot at making it all come together. NAH... no pressure at all ;)
