Y-Wing Building

"I'm the type to help out anyway I can, when ever I can. To me that makes it more enjoyable."

I once thought the same way.
I didn't understand this "code" either when I dove into this hobby. Now over 4 years later and well over $1,000 spent on kits, material, resin and such I understand it very well.

If you start showing progress and that you are indeed committed to such an undertaking you will see that others will be more willing to help out.

I thought the point of the boards was to share info. We're in here to help one another. If you come here to gloat or have bragging rights you should go somewhere else. Just my 2 cents.

Not that this is news to oldtimers here, but I'm in the info sharing camp. I respect the reasons why some choose otherwise, though, and if they prefer not to answer particular questions on the board, that's fine. But sometimes* folks are jumped on for just asking a simple question, which I don't agree with.

*not ALL the time, and not by everyone in that camp, of course.

Treadwell ane Yodakiller1138!! Glad to see your posts. Helping out is what it's all about to me. Glad to see some feel the same way.

Yodakiller, got your p.m., I still have some eggs, I'll send you some info.

Same old sad story... Why should those of us who spend thousands a year on this hobby tell those that won't do the research what the fruits of our labors are?

Wrong yodakiller1138,
The boards have nothing to do with sharing. If those of us who FIND the donor parts give that information away , then how is that sharing? Sounds pretty one sided to me. Not to mention letting all the worthless lurkers have a feeding frenzy off of our hard work.

Where is OUR help?

Some (This person cannot express opinions maturely)ing people are always wanting things for nothing...

I personally help people all the time, they just happen to help me in return.

Darkside, all I can say is I totally disagree. If I was to say anymore you wouldn't like it and I'd be kicked off. I'll just leave it at that.

Alright then. Where is all this sharing? Put you money where you mouth is. If this disscussion is about freely sharing your finds on donor kits let's see the posts. If you don't mind spending thounsands of dollars on kits and telling everyone out of the 50 kits you bought which one kit has that 1 part then do so.

Yodakiller?......

Heatray?.......

Anyone else???????

yodakiller1138,

No no, please let me here what you have to say. No one is going to kick you off. We're adult's here. You simply have no legs to stand on concerning this subject

Come on, WHY does anyone on these boards OWE you anything? WHY is it that those of us who DO the RESEARCH, owe you our work with nothing in return? No one owes you (This person cannot express opinions maturely) man.

Sharing is more than a one way transaction... That's the reason these threads went down the tubes years ago. Those of us that were actually contributing became tired of sharing, and being the only ones openly and actively doing so.

Darkside BoBa Flint, I as well as others simply want to build a Y wing. We don't have a chip on our shoulders. If I had all the info I would not have a problem letting everyone know. I see now what others have been saying for years. So as far as I'm concerned I'm gone from these boards for good. The two of you seem to get off on mocking people showing your true character. well as far as I'm concerned you two can off. Gooddbye.

If you want to build a Y, all you have to do is research the model and commit yourself to looking for and buying many a model kit. Why is this such a horrible notion?

I have been actively pursuing kits for the Y-Wing and other studio scale models for almost two years now and have spent close to $2000 dollars on them. I have collected mostly older Tamiya 1/35th scale Military kits, the Tamiya 1/12th scale auto, much of the Bandai 1/48th Armour kit series, 1/24th and 1/87th Airfix, expensive Entex & Esci kits, and miscellaneous kits of all scales. I can see why members are not openly volunteering information, its expensive. But by the same token, unless you paid higher than fair market value, most of the “wrong” kits can be resold on eBay for about what you paid for them. I see the real expense is the money tied up in “kit inventory.”
If I can help any one out please e-mail me or send me a PM.

Mocking you? No...challenging is more like it.
Prove us wrong. Prove to us that openly sharing info will stimulate the growth of more people participating.

But you have proven the point that some of us have been trying to make. There are several people that come here and to other SS sites just looking for a list of kits, then when they relise how much those kits will cost they just want castings of everything, they want someone to hand them over exact plans and such.
They aren't willing to do any reasearch. They just want a big model kit.
You're stomping off shows you are one of these people.

Guys, As the new kid on the block I can only give my point of view, and I am trying to understand everyone else's.

As I started posting, one of the first things I stated was that I had very little to offer at this time. I did offer what I had and many took me up on it and all got what I said they would quick and easy.

Problem is that's all I got! If I had more I would offer it up. That's it.

What I don't understand are the money statements being made. I know that you guys have spent the money! Read my first posts. I respect that very much. But like so many things in life, not everyone can do it. Not everyone who could would. I just don't understand. It seems that not telling anyone anything makes it seem like I still have my money??? Or it was a better investment because there will surely be less Ys built?? I just don't understand what this forum is for then.

The only things that can be posted would sound like this..

" How's your Y coming?"

" Good, and yours?"

" Great"

" That's good."

" Well, keep up the good work."

" You too!"

Or is this just a place to post final pictures once the deal is done?

I'm not trying to cause waves and this will likely be my last post here, but to a new comer this place looks totally different than how it is once you start trying to get into things. Maybe not to folks who have been here for years, but to new ones it is. So does it grow or die?

Doesn't anyone remember being a kid and seeing all your friends with Star Wars toys. We played and played. Are we not just bigger kids now? Why else would anyone spend 1,000s of dollars on kits looking for parts if they weren't.

We just want to play. Play and build Ys. Bad, good, better and best. It doesn't matter to me. As long as they are being built. The more the better too.

And do people really get kicked off here for discussing things? Forum?? I hope not.

So for the record, If those of us who have less to offer are deemed unworthy by those who have more to offer, and that's all it boils down to, then I suppose that's all that will be.

But, one thing just came to mind,
" The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few,

or the one."

It's just a better way of thinking to me.

Goodbye

I've been a member here at the Studio Scale Modeling section since it was born from the regular forum. I'd like to add my 2 cents worth on the subject of sharing information.

Maybe, instead of asking what was used here or there out of the clear blue. If let's say, one showed that maybe you were actually working on a section of any particular ship and ran into a road block, then I would think that people would be more willing to help out a person. After all, isn't building these models what it's all about here?

There have been times I've been stuck on a section and someone has come to me with info that's helped tremendously and in turn I've also been able to help them out on something else. But the key is that there's actual building involved, not just the gaining of information.

My question to the many that frequent this site and this particular thread is, how many are actually building a Y-Wing or any other studio model? By actually building I mean a physical model already started.

I'd say, show off what you've got done and I gaurantee you'll have members here helping.

What do you say? Let's give it a shot! A picture is worth a thousand words.

Rolando

Good point Rolando, WHO is building and who is just info surfing? I can only think of 7-8 ACTIVE, old-school builders here. Only four of them post any more from time to time. The rest just seem to be seeking information...

As one of the original memebrs of the original board I can say this, I left because of all the leaches. I'm sorry but that's the nicest way to put it. I have been buying kits for Galacica related ships. Many of them were also used on Star Wars ships. Why not, Apogee was the company
icon_wink.gif

I have an easy $7,000.00+ in kits. Why would I dump my list for someone who wants a free ride? I don't get to pass go and collect $200.00! Why should they. For the most part MANY of us would help IF you or anyone interested would show a serious interest and were willing to share YOUR info, ETC. But coming on this board and saying " Hey, I want to build X ship. Can you please GIVE me the info so I can do it without all the trouble of buying wrong kits and having to buy more. Because I don't want to spend $500.00 on the wrong kit and have to TRY and recoup it" See the point? We don't boot people for asking. We don't black list them either. We just keep them at arms length. I'm sorry if this offends you but get a grip! This is expensive in both time and money. I watch this board still and to tell you the truth, its still not a good place with all the nubies wanting the free ride. Maybe its because a lot of you are in your teens and don't know what real life is. Maybe your just a selfish adult who wants and does not give in return. What ever the reason, expect the cold shoulder till we warm up to you. IF we do.
This is mostly my own opinion but I think it echos some whom I still talk with.

Either way, give it a try. We all started with nothing. Some guesses were dead on. Some were not. Its the hazards of this hobby. If you can't afford it don't do it. If you can and are will to take two to three years to complete a project then you will have a nice replica when done. If not, you will have wasted your time and the others that helped you.

Take care and good luck.

Oh, and Happy Easter to all. No matter what you believe in.

Mark

My thoughts exactly. Let's get back to the Y. These conversations are really becoming redundant. Share if you're willing, don't if you're not. That simple. If I personally find out anything, usually I post it, but that's hardly a set standard. I don't care how much money is spent on this, let's keep from becoming a bunch of elitists. That sucks for the newcomers. That said, newbies, present something! Let's see some progress here!

Trimmed a Legg's egg and test-fitted it yesterday.

It looks like hell because I used it as a mixing cup for JB Weld and 2-part epoxy during work on other projects. Figured the clear brittle plastic needed reinforcing, so why not kill two birds with one stone?

I stopped short of trimming the Saturn part because I want to get a Monogram version and see if I prefer that one.

The monogram wasn't used... I may be wrong but I don't think the monogram saturn was being made at the time. It's not in any of my calalogs. You may be thinking of the revell space kits offered during the 70's.
