Yep, my PM is sent.

I built up the LE of my Mk1 wings to increase the chord by about the same amount Mike has on his new version, but you can't really do too much about the span issue.

I'll finish my Mk 1 as Red 5, because I've deepened the fuse and butt plate to match. Red 5 is my favourite fuse, but I actually prefer Red Leader's paint scheme, so this is the perfect excuse for a second kit! :)

Or - I love obscure stuff. One of the ships had a big red stripe around the engine intake (a THICK stripe, not the thin one). There's a Chronicles pic showing it masked up. I'd love to do that one, or one of the others nobody ever sees. Does anyone have any other good refs for obscure and/or pyro ships?

Cheers,
Martyn

I know the X you speak of buddy, its got a Red Canopy frame too i think?
Red Leader is my fave, its just obscure and has a wonderful paint job, and i too love to be different hehe, just never been a fan of 5 TBH!

Lee,

that's the one! In the Chronicles pic you can JUST make out the red canopy, but the thick red stripe across the rear of the 'intake' section stands out. It looks like it is being sprayed with an unbroken red fuselage line, and the 'brick panels' on the engine mounts also look like they may be red. I would LOVE to model this ship but I kinda need to know the wing stripe count and a few other things for it to be even vaguely credible. :(

Ever seen any other pics of it? There are literally hundreds of pics in the personal collections of the 1976 ILM guys, and tons of uncatalogued stuff in the LF archives, but little of that material will ever surface I guess.

There's also an ESB buildup with red gun tips, but it's actually an MPC kit; so I guess an SS interpretation would be what, semi-canonical?

Cheers,
Martyn

Jerry if i remember right, its Grant McCune painting it, havent looked at the pic in a while lol.
I was sure it was a Red 4 variant, but again i havent got the pic to hand.

Lee, you can just make out the edge of the guy's face in the pic I have; could be Grant. Can't see the wings in the Chron version. Have you seen a bigger or uncropped version of this pic?

The only Red 4 pic I've seen that's any good is the one with Lucas standing in the middle of the Archives collection (and that's really Red 5 with one stripe painted out). Are there any good refs for an earlier Red 4?

Cheers,
Martyn

Looking at it now Martyn, its Red 5, must have been a WIP paint process or something, i can make out the 5 stripes in the masking tape!
Ill try scan the image later and nail it up buddy! BTW its in Sci Fi and Fantasy modeller issue vol 5!

bests.....lee

I think so? i have the magazine you speak of Lee, i`ll look at it too.:rolleyes

Yep! It was the red 4, with the red cockpit and the one can with the red on the back end and the red paint on the fuselage too.

Hey, thanks you guys! Red 4...sweet, it has an identity! Now to track down some idea of her weathering and general panel layout...yeah, right. Oh well, never mind, I guess I can think of it as latitude to do whatever I want. Red 4 it is for my next build. :)

Im looking at the picture right now and counting the pieces of tape and i see 5 pieces of tape spaced out.
I would like to see that when you are done Martyn!

Yuo know now that im staring at it and lookingreal hard it just may very well be a red 5 variant!
I think that it was painted early on before they were assigned to the individuals and then updated?
I dont know Martyn, i cant give you a sure answer, sorry old friend.

Not to worry, and thanks for the info! I can't really picture this though. If there are five 'stripey' bits of tape behind the "L" shape, shouldn't that mean it's Red...6?

:eek a red 6?! Nah, no way, could it? didnt the red 4 follow red 1 and ?:wacko

Well for what its worth, i count four strips of tape leading to the main mask, giving me 5 stripes lol, so.....i have no clue lol.

Hey Lee, i do too count the same tape "on top" wings, but the bottom left wing i count 6 spaces leading to the main mask, but on the top right i count only 5 stripes visible.
Now on the bottom right you can clearly see(magnifying glass) all 6 spaces!:lol

Dang. Oh well. Did anyone ever work out whether Red 10, Red 13 etc were actually built up? If the stripes were divided in two, we could call this Red 10 but I've never seen a ref for that. More likely to be either an early stage of Red 5, or a pyro that just happens to have 5 stripes, I guess...

What were the two ships that went into the DS trench with red 1? red 4 and what ? red11? but i do remember them using red five in that trench sequence along with red leader .

I know 7 were built. Of those I suspect several were just pyros. A "blue" X was tested but changed. One even had a yellow canopy (at one time)with yellow bands on the guns.

This looks like Red 5, 6 pieces of tape= 5 stripes. The "band" on the rear engine looks like a piece of tape he just stuck there to get the engine dirtied up...

I always thought the one you guys are referring to wound up as Red 6, not sure though. Anyway here is a peak at the cockpit that was "inspired by" a combo of the full size and the 4ft model, the ILM style one is still available (and i even prefer that one) but this is a nice option for people IMO...thanks mike

Jamie, the colour pic makes it clear that the band on the engine really is the usual red paint. Unfortunately it also shows the band being on the opposite engine, so the negative of one of these pics has been flopped. Which one? :confused

I.m thinking Red 6 too. I count six bits of tape on the lower left wing, but there's enough of a gap at the right edge of the masking for another stripe. Looking at the upper right wing I think you can actually make out six stripes. Kinda. At least we know it's not the 'real' Red 5, the butt plate looks more pyro, right?

Also, looks like both the quarter panels forward of the cockpit are red too.

Mike, that's a nice cockpit!
