Now you can see that he is not really holding a penis/dild0 after all. Thank God. :sick
I had this conversation on Facebook yesterday with Wade Egan...I'd not even noticed the sword handle (Tsukagashira in Japanese) because I train with swords like this and they all have these handles...They're called "Tachi" in Japanese, and differ from the katana in length, sori (curve to the blade) and the way they were designed to be worn/carried...Tachi are slung from a belt, blade down and drawn using a rising cut upwards...Uchigatana/Katana are slung through the belt, blade up, and drawn directly forwards in a slightly more efficient manner for a man on foot (not a horse, which is where the Tachi was used)....
The use of the Tachi is significant perhaps in signifying the age of the blade..Since Uchigatana came into use from the late Sengoku period ("warring states" period in Japanese history)...The Tachi was used before this time, and the blades differ enough in style to be noticeable..The koshirae (design features) of both kinds of sword differ too, and to use the Tachi over the Katana shows that the makers of the film thought about the age of the blade Wolverine will be carrying..That's a good sign..If he'd had a Katana, the blade would date from 1600(ish) on....The fact that he carries a Tachi dates the blade further back than that...And fits with the ideas in the comic books better....
I'm not saying Tachi weren't made and worn past 1600...They were...Many cut down and worn in Uchigatana fashion in fact...But the handle indicates that the blade is more likely to be older....(And the sori too...Since an Uchigatana would be a touch straighter, generally speaking..)
All of which are good signs...It means someone on the movie cared enough about details to make it right...Even if American audiences see a "penis" on the sword....That's just the audience's failure, not the films..And I'm glad to see them get the right blade...
Since I use swords like this in daily training (well, katana actually...) here in Tokyo, this mattered to me a little more than to most people I suspect...But I found it laughable that Wade saw what he saw...I'd not considered it at all...
It's a good sign..Trust me..
