WIP: ANH Tusken Raider

Here's pics of the perepheral vision holes I just put in my Tusken mask. Still need to do some more color blending, but you get the idea.

Up close, they just look like a more worn spot of the head wrap material.

Hey all,

With work going almost nonstop for the past few weeks, it's been hard to finish this one up. Nonetheless, made a few more safety and comfort tweaks today (e.g., shortened robe length so that I don't trip over it while in costume, added more fans to mask, etc.) and finally took some completion pics.

I'll probably still go back and weather/dirty up the robes even more as time permits, but overall I'm pleased with it. Even though this setup has the mask and several clothing layers to it (e.g., inner robe, outer robe), it's actually pretty comfortable to wear. The peripheral vision mod helps tons. The only drawback is that I can't hear very well with my mask fans on because of the enclosed noise...increased vision but decreased hearing, go figure.

At any rate, just wanted to say thanks again to everyone for their supportive and encouraging posts as this build came together. As always, questions/comments/suggestions are always welcome. Hope you enjoy the pics! :D

Just looked at your RL costume application- Consider yourself approved (although a couple minor tweaks need to be done to satisfy the RL costume standards)! PM sent.

Wow! I never thought much of the Tusken Raiders, but seeing how you put this together gives me a whole new appreciation for that costume. Great job on it!

Awesome work! Any chance you could show a few shots of the fans/cooling you have in the mask? I just started cutting mine tonight, and can see it will get hot. Also, did you put anything in to the mask to take up the dead space so that it is not flopping all around on your head?

Thanks for the kind words. Nothing too special, but here's a pic of the cooling fan set up I'm currently using:

Honestly, the fans help a little but not much. Since the mask is made out of latex, air doesn't really escape and it gets hotter than a Tatooine summer inside there pretty quick, lol. I didn't put any extra padding in mine since I have a big head and I didn't want anything rubbing up against my face while the mask was on, but I can see how it might make sense for some folks. Hope this helps and if you've got extra questions just shoot me a PM or post 'em here. Always nice to see fellow Tusken Raiders the making!

One more tip for you. Think geek sells a MP3 shirt. IT basically is a small multiple button operated player. I added several Tusken sounds to the card, ran the control pad down my arm and in side my palm in my glove. Then when I strike a pose, I just hit a button with my finger and I growl like a self respecting tusken. It is very well hidden and plenty loud. The sound comes right from your chest and is a really fun effect.

This is a great thread. I haven't been around the RPF much and didn't make many masks for about a year.

I really like your fabric selection and the subtle weathering. Great work on the respirator as well. Very accurate. It was a big score to get a reproduction of that bandolier also. I've never even seen an original come up for sale.

Great costume! The profile and back photos with the way the fabric drapes are really evocative of the scene of the Tuskens pilfering Luke's Landspeeder. That speaks volumes to its accuracy.

Looks like you walked right off the movie screen. I love it! I have a soft spot for the aliens of Tatooinne and really enjoyed your build progress of this costume. I'll be sure to keep an eye on this thread to see further updates on your weathering. Looks great my friend!
