A tough one to answer.
I'm biased towards Star Wars. ANH and Empire really knocked it right out of the park, but Jedi is mediocre.
Indiana Jones did well with Raiders and The Last Crusade, but the Temple of Doom, not so much.
BTTF is a tempting candidate. The second film may have lacked the emotional resonance of the first, but it's an ingenious and clever plot that explores pretty much every time travel concept ever conceived. BTTF3 is a fun adventure and thrill ride.
Sure, Bourne was a solid and consistent franchise. It has no mediocre sequels, but it never reached the levels that the other trilogies did.
The less said about The Matrix sequels, the better.
The first three Alien films deserve an honorable mention. The first two were great and I think the third film while the setup is a bit a ridiculous, the film and performances themselves are great.
I'm gonna go with Lord of the Rings. I found it to action oriented in the second film and tired of the visual effects/Legolas showboating, not to mention some of Gimli's humor at inappropriate times, but those were minor distractions in a pretty awesome film series. Definitely looking forward to The Hobbit.
Here's hoping that Nolan and Co. can make "The Dark Knight Rises" as good as the first two films. That would be unheard of in superhero films.
