They were shooting something one night right next to the Griffith Observatory and I pretty much walked into it by accident. They were just setting up the lighting and so I stopped to watch.
I asked the only guy that was sort of close to me, they shooting a commercial or something? (it wasn't a large crew at all)
"Unsolved Mysteries. Do you watch it?"
Something about that voice.........
Yup. it's Robert Stack. Standing in a trench coat, waiting. Somebody calls him and he walked away but looked back and gave me a smile and a wave.

Andre the Giant

There are probably quite a few that wouldn't really consider him a celebrity, but he was definitely larger than life.

I not only met one--I may have inadvertantly caused the death of one. I don't remember his name but it was one of the guys who played DR. Who, the one with the Mo haircut.

It was either 1987 or 88. I was at a convention in Columbus Georgia. It was the first day of the con. About 8pm my buddy and I were getting on the elevator and he got on with us. We were the only three on it. We talked for a minute or two and we all got off on the same floor. As the three of us were walking down the hall--he asked me if I had a cigarrette (which seemed kind of wierd to me--him being a celebrity and all)..Well, unfortunately I did have one and gave it to him. He went into his room and we went on about our business.

The next morning the big news was that he had died sometime during the night. We may have been the last people to see him alive, I'm not sure. Maybe he was trying to quit smoking and thats why he bummed one off of me, I dunno. I certainly hope it wasn't what killed him that night.

Look it up, when and where he died...I kid you not..

El Segundo was my home town, growing up in southern California you end up meeting (or nearly meeting) a lot of celebrities.
One that sticks out, in particular was sitting next to Charlton Heston at the counter of the Gay 90's Ice Cream Parlor when I was 5 years old.

You're ****ing ****ting me?

Bettie Page was an overweight, gray haired old lady when I had met her at the old folks home. She was always alone but would always smile to people. Reading up on her after she died she didnt know her image was an icon and for a good while didnt know people were trying to find her. Once she was made aware, she supposedly made every attempt to hide who she was to keep that image alive while also trying to get paid. Based on the few photos of her taken just before she passed, thats the woman in the old folks home I had met a few times, minus the haircut.

Let's see.....

"Flyin" Brian Pillman: Met him in Dayton signing autographs before the 1995 Great American Bash. I had a sign made up from his days teaming with Steve Austin as the Hollywood Blonds. He saw it and thought it was cool and signed it. When he came out for his match, he saw the sign down in the first few rows and was pointing and doing the "movie camera" taunt he used to do. Guy was laid back and cool to talk with.

Lyle Alzado: Dude was massive (I was also young)....I was awestruck when he signed a poster for me (I was a huge Browns fan as a little kid).

Chris Benoit: Oddly enough, met him at a Brian Pillman Tribute show in Cincinnatti. Was real quiet and seemed like he could easily snap (Which he obviously did when he killed his wife and kid).

If you read the Wiki Page on him

"After the double-murder suicide, former wrestler Christopher Nowinski contacted Michael Benoit, father of Chris Benoit, suggesting that years of trauma to his son's brain may have led to his actions. Tests were conducted on Benoit's brain by Julian Bailes, the head of neurosurgery at West Virginia University, and results showed that "Benoit's brain was so severely damaged it resembled the brain of an 85-year-old Alzheimer's patient."[108] He was reported to have had an advanced form of dementia, similar to the brains of four retired NFL players who had suffered multiple concussions, sank into depression, and harmed themselves or others. Bailes and his colleagues concluded that repeated concussions can lead to dementia, which can contribute to severe behavioral problems.[109] Benoit's father suggests that brain damage may have been the leading cause of the crime.[110] He also confirmed that his son was quietly cremated, but what was done with the ashes is not public knowledge.[111]"

I met Harry Blackstone Jr after one of his shows when I was in college and since I was with a group of other professional and semi-professional magicians, we all ended up going out to Denny's afterwards.
Eight magicians in a Denny's is something let me tell you.
I still feel sorry for the poor waitress.

Does Bob Anderson count as a celebrity? Long time ago, in the early '80s, I fenced competitively. My coach it turns out, somehow knew Anderson and he came to one of our classes and actually gave quick sparring bouts and instruction to us. Got me a signed Darth Vader (I was just a wee thing and he signed it 'Darth') 8x10 from him :) Long time ago now, but he made an impression even at that early age.

I got to briefly meet and shake hands with George Carlin after a show in Vegas. Even though it was brief, it was great to meet one of the funniest people to ever hold a microphone.
