TRON toy Deluxe ID Disc. Mod./Enhancements

What the crap man? Why did you remove the content of your posts?

What are you talking about? :confused

I'm glad my little mod is working for you guys.
on a different topic, my microcontroller based lighting is coming along :)

Perhaps he got hit with the dreaded Cease and Desist or he violated the terms of use or he witnesed a crime and was put into protective custody or Hermione used an Obliviate charm or Aliens came and took him to their home planet and tried to erase his existance or..... really what other rumors could we start here.... :love:eek:wacko:lol

For right now I think this just needs to be put with the mystery of how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Sarlacc Pit.

Made you look. :confused

I'm curious about the removal of the posts as I found it very insightful/useful when I was taking apart my own disc. Perhaps legal reasons?

So I don't have a lot of $$ but I have been watching this guys's site and he is suddenly posting about SMD with no explaination. What is this technology? It looks like LEDs but on a tape. Is 30 bucks a good deal? Has anyone else tried it?

Smd packages just means the type of board mounting a component requies. For example, the common LED that you see is a "through hole" type, meaning they have pins that you solder through holes on a board. SMD is a surface mount type, meaning there are no pins but instead, they require soldeing very small points that directly attach to the surface.

Smd is a lot trickier to solder if you have limited soldering experience since there's a greater chance of burning components or bridging solder traces accidentally. I would avoid it unless you know how to work with that sort of stuff, but 30 is a fair price for 100 white leds from my experience.

P.s.
I have not checked the link because I'm posting from my phone, but smd leds usually are packaged in a tape/reel. You must remove them from the packaging before u can use it. However, they do sell presoldered leds on a ribbon that you could buy ay different lengths. They are not addressable, meaning they all turn on or off, you cannot do light patterns

Thanks for the patient explanation and links guys! I love checking out the RPF on my lunch break but just recently broke down and registered so I could post. The comments on his blog are out of control :confused

Edit: I actually found a packing list and you were right-on it is 2 segments, one is 2 feet and one is a little over 1 foot for a total of about 100 LED's.

Upgraded my Sam Flynn Identity Disc. Now it has all WHITE led's! Check it out here.

looks good but i dont know about the clear goop all bumpy in the inner ring. I would have used maybe ultra clear hotglue and overlowed it on purpose and shave it down with a razer to make it level with the ring. That is just a really cheap way i have done it.

I think using more opaque glue would look better, it would hide the LED's and diffuse the light a bit

Hey - I wanted to post my initial videos of my Mod.
Video 1 - Tron Disc mod - front - YouTube
Video 2- Tron Disc Mod - inside - YouTube
Looks like it won't let me embed the videos here (somebody - let me know if there is a way). I'll take some pictures later.

This is for my daughter's Halloween costume - she wants to be Quorra.

There are some specifics on the youtube video, and I'm eventually hoping to post an Instructable, but I'm using an AVR Atmeta328 and Max7221 LED Driver IC. I'm using the stock momentary button and switch, but everything else has been gutted and replaced with a total of 64 individually controllable 3mm LEDs.

Honestly - I'm horrible with a soldering iron. It mostly took a lot of patience and planning (that's why there are 12 steps!). My first disc took almost an entire month - the second disc about 1 1/2 weeks.
