Looking at pictures of the blue board, the green board has a very similiar layout but is missing the extra pads. That shouldn't be an issue for mods - you just have to solder directly to the resistors instead.
I just finished my mod doing exactly that, no problems.

Hi guys -

Total newb when it comes to EL stuff here, so I'm learning gradually, but can anyone tell me if I might possibly be able to use this:

Product Detail - Solution Industries

to replace the electronics in my Deluxe ID disc to put some 5mm EL wire on the outside of my disc (replacing the rubber ring, of course) and still fit the AAA inverter inside it? Presumably, I'd be totally gutting the inside, of course: battery pack, non-essential plastic insides and all.

Am I on the right track, or am I about to waste $15 of toy?

The theory is sound, but most EL inverters won't fit inside. I've used a special 5v inverter designed for use inside keyboards that may work, but I only knew of one place that sold it & their site is no longer working for ordering anything. It was NEON TRIM if you want to contact them.

The battery pack in the item I linked has these dimensions and runs off a single AAA:

Size: 2 1/4"L x 3/4"H x 1 5/16"W

Eyeballing it, it 'might' fit. I ordered one and should get it by Thursday-ish. In the meantime, I'm going to trash one of my discs (I have 4) and prep it for the conversion attempt. The only problem I'm going to have is where to place the switch, but that'll have to wait until I can actually mess around with the insides.

I have two of the deluxe discs now :p

Well pleased with them and each is mounted by the tv along with my wii Tron light cycle stand......

Sam and KJevin Discs are well cool...

Just a shame they are not going to do a 3rd run version with tri colour leds so you can choose what colour you want the disc, but guess this would influence their sales on other versions :(

i haven't tried the electroluminscent mods but i would start off by researching small inverters. Cool Neon is one source for them and specialises in el wire and inverters (they call them drivers there). they have them as small as operating a few inches off a button battery and others that operate in various voltage inputs. find one with dimensions that would fit inside the casing, offers acceptable brightness with respect to the battery and voltage you plan on using.

[i've used their 9v pipsqueak ones for my tron-inspired shoes -which i've yet to share on these boards because i'm considering working on another variation of them -time permitted.]

you can also mod the casing. spray white or chrome paint in the interior so that more of the light can bounce out. drill holes in the black plastic of the inner c-ring to let more light out -preferably to give the 16 sections effect as found in the movie versions...

Anyone know how to use the exsisting 6 batteries in the disk to light up EL wire directly?...
from the discs i have, they appear to be two rows of three batteries on the inner and outer ring. assuming the button batteries are around 1.5v each, that's about 4 to 4.5 volts per row.

if you're removing the toy electronics anyways, this compartment can be re-wired in series, upping the voltage to in the ballpark of 8 volts. thought i'd mention that if people would like to use what's already there with space considerations and all.

as a side note: personally, i'd hate to mix different size batteries to obtain a certain voltage. also, i'd probably not use button batteries for e.l. because of the drain they might incur, but adding even more button batteries wired in parallel might be beneficial to boost the power capacity.

one idea someone might be able to try is to use another type of battery such as... say a lipo (lithium polymer) that would recharge via a usb port and power the small inverters for the e.l. wire. an extra lipo charging circuitry would be needed to prevent overcharging and the seriously inherent issues with charging them directly. this circuitry is crucial because lipos are known to catch on fire, expand, and do other undesirable things. also, there's lithium variations of household battery sizes and lithium ions. this strays into a whole other category of good, viable batteries for this disc that could be charged via usb.

if you can hit up your rc hobbyists, many of them have great experience with lipo and other rechargeable portable battery types. they may even have experience on how to incorporate them well into this project.

and, with a usb port, one can even mod one of those spy web cams with a micro sd recorder built into them (like the md80 or 808 sans housing) into a disc webcam when connected via usb... but i digress. ^_^

i still see lots of potential for various mods and glad to see interest in them. :)

I haven't taken it out of the wrapping yet, but looks like it's no different from the Sam Flynn one, except the ring and C are orange.
I'm sure someone has to know. Worse case scenario, someone could always do a mod of one of the Sam ID discs and make it split into (lighting it would be a bit of a challenge).

If you're careful, you might be able to take the inverter's circuit board out of the plastic case and mount it inside the disc directly. You'd have to devise/install another battery holder, though.

Picked up 2 Rinzlers and a Kevin Flynn today at different Targets. It looks like the Rinzler disc has surprisingly good light diffusion and the white on the Kevin disc does a good job in that department as well due to the white casing. These look way better than Sam's right out the box. But yeah the person at Target pulled a case and got me a Rinzler and Kevin. Im sure they'll do the same for the y'all.

It was being sold overseas at first, then made it stateside.

Back on topic, Has anyone thought of using the stock board to do the initial "loading bar" sequence like in the movie and put it in the C-Ring? It looks plausible but I haven't seen anyone attempt it... has anyone tried this?

Went to Target at East L.A and got Rinzler but no Kevin. I asked worker to see if they have Kevin (Series 2) in stock and he said it was sold out. Last time I checked there are lot of Sam disc and Rinzler was about to ran out soon. Will hunting this weekend somewhere in Target area for Kevin disc. That will be my last mission.

Light diffusion is really improved on the outer ring portion... I wanna say theyre brighter too? But yeah, Rinzler and Kevin Discs definitely look better out the box... but I still cringe at the C-Ring lighting... I got 2 extra sam discs for making my own mods... Going for a movie accurate Clu and Sam but still havent found a very detailed tutorial on better lighting with the stock power.
