Tron Legacy Deluxe Identity Disc mods?

I'd recommend LEDs over EL for the discs. You really need that high intensity light to shine through. On my CLU disc, the rings are translucent white with Amber/Yellow LEDs. I don't think a dye is necessary.

Would like to find an off-the-shelf solution to have the SpinToys Deluxe Disc modded to:

• Vary the LED lights to music audio input (3.5mm audio input). Sort of like the Monster Tron Audio Disc Dock, but for way less than their $250 USDollars.

I was searching the web for LED Light Rope (would remove the LED's from plastic sheath) and a connecting mini controller that works to sound. If the controller had a 3.5mm audio jack input, that would be cool. It can be tethered to a power line since I'd just use it for my desktop, but self-contained would be better.

I've seen the awesome USB mod previously mentioned in this thread, but is there a simple mod that can be done -- no usb hookup -- to make the lights stay on constantly? I'm capable of soldering a jump wire in or something like that, but I'm curious if it's possible with what's already in the disk.

yes.

solder the eight solder pads on the circuitboard to the ground wire.

note the eight green wires on the board closest to the black blob (ignore the farthest solder point on the far left):

I'm pretty sure he means comming from the battery box Nick.

The pics can be a bit confusing since mod 1 and 2 are done to his disc as well.

oldken is right.

technically any negative circuit trace or path from the battery box's black wire will suffice. but the easiest route is just to say the battery box's negative terminal. i chose the one closest to the inner part of the disc.

i just found this battery mod on youtube:

it essentially does the same thing mine does but bypasses the resistors on the circuitboard. each of the leds are wired directly to the battery box. it uses a whole lot of extra wires to solder as you can see. he also puts the extra switch under the button cover.

mine jumpers them on the board and uses the existing resistors for a cleaner look and for future considerations to other mods i've done. i also did this so that the leds wouldn't burn out & keep to the toy specs.

my battery mod doesn't require an extra switch. [the switch in my disc, however is to switch the usb mod on and off and to maintain the toy's sound effects. different mod.]

but, whatever works for what you need to do.

picked up a rinzler disk today at target and an extra sam.

Im wondering if anyone has tried connecting 2 top halves yet?

im currently going through possible attachment methods, including using magnets (im concerned about EM interference) or just using 4 screws in the nubs as neonox is thinking about doing

Not to go entirely off topic (as it's still technically a modification of the deluxe disc), but has anyone considered casting the deluxe disc in foam-rubber to be used as actual throwing discs? I know there are cheap $8 dollar frisbee ones out there, but they suck.

I also thought it might be kinda cool to cast the shells out of foam rubber, and then the inner and outer rings out of a translucent silicone, with some very simple circuitry inside, and when the disc is thrown, the centrifugal force would cause a switch to complete the circuit, and the inner and outer rings would light up; Basically, it would light up when you threw it. Just a random thought of mine.

When you guys have this down to perfection... Will you possibly be offering to do these mods for other members that aren't exactly electrical wizards. For a price that is. I would love to have a disc that is brighter, stays on permanently or has different patterns. I just suck at all things electrical. My hads shake too much nowadays.

Sorry if anyone has brought this up before, but does anyone know the stats for the type of LEDs that are in the disc originally?

I plan on doing a few additional LEDs, but want them to be similar brightness to the ones already in the disc, instead of replacing them all.

I just opened up my identity disc today, and noticed that I do not have those open soldering points pre-resistor for the simple soldering mod. Has anyone else run into this new green circuit board? cause the ones I see in the mod pics are blue...

I have 6 discs (2 Sam, 3 Rinzler, 1 Kevin) and I've opened up four of them (2 Sam, 1 Rinzler, 1 Kevin). All four I've opened so far have the green board. All the discs were bought from different stores over a 2 week period in the San Jose area so I suspect all the new dsics have the green board.

Looking at pictures of the blue board, the green board has a very similiar layout but is missing the extra pads. That shouldn't be an issue for mods - you just have to solder directly to the resistors instead.

I recently bought some 3mm white LEDs (5000mcd, 3.5Vdc/30mA, 20 degree) and to the naked eye they look exactly the same as the stock LEDs. IMO, of course.
