That would look very slick! The Funhouse stuff is 22.00 per 1 meter strip if you buy 4+ strips. So, that'd be 110.00 altogether for 5 strips of 1 meter tape (should be close to 15 feet). See their spec page on the tape for details: Cool Neon Electroluminescent 1 Meter Ribbon (CNR1M)

Not cheap, but better than 200. I would like to hear some feedback on Cool Neon (Funhouse) EL Tape and if it looks as good as the pics show.



That's my plan for the vest/fedora/shoes mod I want to make. I've heard a few people on this thread say it works very well, and you can easily remove the EL Tape to wash the clothes.

I'm gonna go ahead and go with Funhouse. We'll see if it works out, though from what I've seen it looks promising.

I'm pretty happy with the way the funhouse tape turned out. My only complaint is the strength of the connectors; I'd recommend making your own contacts for the tape if possible to make it more flexible. Also, sticky velcro= very good idea.

@Annisse - awesome pics! Do you have any details on the materials or how he made the costume? That's a really nice fit on the jacket. I think I recognize him... does he work for a mouse by any chance?

His suit is by UD Replicas. Yes. Works for a mouse named Disney do you work there too?

Quick question regarding that CLU helmet, the 2 depressed areas on each side of the chin, I haven't seen them on any images of movie helmet, where did they come from for the model?

I'm going to butt in and assume he used the pep file which was modeled from the Xbox 360 avatar accessory since it has those depressions.

Bsal: How are you planning on seeing out of the helmet?

I am very into anything Tron and was researching everything on here and came across it. It showed the intake holes by the chin and neer the back of the helmet at the top. If I find the post again I wil stick a link to it here. Lovely work to all of you by the way and inspiring stuff!

Well in a lot of the released material it is just flattened over.

It's probably the computer model that is like that... And the film is so dark that when the physical helmet is actually used it's nearly impossible to see that part. In one of the behind the scenes photos the hole is more visible with some photoshop tinkery.

So either way is good...

I've circled the other intake in blue at the top of the helmet. Most people mistake it for a reflection but it is definitely the other air vent as the article I read had a post by the helmet designer. I imagin it would get badly steamed up without some kind of air movement in there.

Hey everyone! I can finally say I've read this entire thread and I'm impressed by all the hard work and ingenuity. I have a rather unusual question for my first post so bear with me...

I'm a dancer in New Orleans, so Halloween is a pretty big deal here and I'm working on a T:L outfit to wear to work for the latter part of October.

My question is this: is it worth the time, money and effort to try and use EL tape in this situation, or is it too delicate to withstand pole dancing and the like?

There's also the issue of having 4 or 5 power packs strategically placed to run the different sections since it isn't a continuous outfit (so I can't run all the tape off one inverter). After hearing all the complaints people had about the durability of various EL materials, I'm thinking reflective tape might be the way to go in my case. I'd prefer something more eye-catching, especially since no one will get the nice photo effect of reflective tape (no cameras allowed in the club of course!). I bought some glow paint and tried it out, but honestly it was dismal. Suggestions?

Thanks in advance! I'm excited about letting my nerdiness fly at work. I'd bet money that I'll be one of the only girls who won't be wearing a cliche off-the-rack 'Naughty ______' costume. I'll bring a few select songs from the soundtrack for the DJ to play.... I actually found out that they have Derezzed on the computer at work so I danced to it yesterday... Holy crap, most fun I've had pole dancing in a while. :lol Between that and my glowing gin and tonic, it really made me wish I was a dancer at End of Line, and there was a sexy Castor running around. :love

You may receive some e-marriage proposals by the end of the day.

As to your question, I think reflective tape would be the better option for you. Set up correctly, EL tape can be durable, but with a lot of quick movements and a non-continuous costume, I think you might run into problems with reliability and bulk for all the inverters and batteries.

What about using strips of SMD LEDs with a diffusion layer? I think they usually have on-board resistors to run at 12VDC so you could run each section off an A23 battery.
Will the LEDs dig into you on the pole so the solution needs to be flat?

Yeah I was looking at the above photo's thinking, hey there are no vent holes near chin but they can be seen on the behind scenes shots, part of me is thinking it would be less fussing by smoothing it over to save some fiddling sanding & dremeling.

The only issue I have with yours is the hole at the bottom of the chin/side...

It's difficult to sculpt the bottom of it... I don't need it done for Halloween though anyway,

The pics posted on this forum are what I based the vents of my helmet on.As a base, I used the pep as a (rough) base form, and among other adjustments, plugged in some of my own shapes made from cardstock.

Basically, i cut through the helmet, plugged the shape in and smothered it in body filler from the inside..

Yeah, sculpting can be a drag, i found it tough to get what's on my "mind's eye" onto the helmet. I can’t count how many rounds of body filler/spot putty I applied to this. Not having a deadline should work in your favor. You can nit-pick all you want, and plus, i'm sure the progress you make will feel sooo rewarding.

Yep, i'll definitely need to see through this thing. I'm going to make a model using some liquid plastic from Smooth-On, Inc. - Mold Making & Casting Materials Rubber, Plastic, Lifecasting, and More, (pretty good site if you're trying to do this kind of thing, this is my first attempt, but they have a lot of how-to videos to help out).

From the model, I'll cut out what i perceive as the visor,and vacuum form some plexi for it. I'm planning that the the natural lines of the helmet will help blend the visor in, but I do expect some contrast between the tint of the visor, and the darkness of the helmet --hoping for the best.

Finished the top vest portion of my Tron Sam Flynn costume. Made from a large sheet of neoprene, white shower curtain, 1/2 inch weather stripping, and white LED strips.

This is some pretty cool work. Currently weighing the option of using neoprene. I have read some stuff on here about it stretching and that being an issue with EL Tape. Guess that is not a problem if you use LEDs.
I've also read about cutting up a wetsuit causes it to lose it form, but making the suit piece by piece using neoprene sheets seems like it would be ok. Also, making it a bit bigger than a tight-fit size, would solve the stretching issues and your solution of using velcro to secure it makes it easy to get on and off.

I have a few questions though about your suit:

1. Where did you get the neoprene from? What thickness?
2. What did you do for the arms and legs?
3. What did you use to glue the pieces of neoprene together and how strongly are they connected?
4. How many meters of the Turnigy High Density LEDs did you need for the vest?

I probably have some more questions, but I leave it at that for now.

Ok so here is a little update. Started work on my friends' Legacy build today. Here's what I came up with so far. Still got to buy one more strip of el tape for the zipper flap on the opposite side of the jacket and will post pictures when that day comes. Due to him being a bit heavier than me (hes not fat just stocky....ironic that his last name is stocks lol) he will not have it zipped up. It barely even zips for me and im a stick. Sent the guy measurements and he still sent the wrong size. too lazy to send it back haha

Can someone point me in the direction of this EL Tape?
