Tron Legacy Costume

Finally got some pics of my costume uploaded. I only wanted to use synthetic materials for the outfit, so I found a black polyester New Balance jacket at Burlington Coat Factory for the base. The pants are some old polyester dress Wranglers I had in the closet.

The reflective tape is 3M Scotchlite that I bought locally at West Marine. It's about $5.00 for a 3ft x 1in roll, and it took almost four rolls.

The hub I made out of two paper bowls glued together. I poked holes for the nubs on the inside of the disc and the switch, then spray painted it black.

I used four neodymium magnets from Michaels on the inside of the bowl, and four inside the slanted inner edge of the disc (inside it so they can't be seen). Surprisingly enough, simple double-sided tape was enough to hold the magnets inside the disc! I've dropped it several times now and none of them have come loose.

Finally I sewed (yes, sewed!) the hub to the back of the jacket. Here's some pics of the hub with and without the disc:

I'll eventually get a plastic bowl to replace the paper bowls, but I'm in no hurry to do that yet. I kind of like it as is.

The costume was well received at Wizard World Anaheim, then again the next weekend at elecTRONica. People kept asking me where I bought my outfit, then their jaws would drop when I told them I made it.

Oh, and I put it all together in just under 8 hours the night before i went to Wizard World Anaheim!

A couple suggestions with reflective tape: Overlap your strips! It means less places for it to peel up at. I had mine flush together, but went back over the joints and put a small strip over it to cover the gap, and it's worked much better! Fabric glue also works wonders to re-adhere spots that peel up. Just use it in a thin layer, or it can make the tape bubble up.

Now, when I can afford it, I'll start in on an EL tape version.

Nice work on the layout Jaeflash. Kinda like what the fashionable TRON warriors wear when not deep on The Grid. :love An EL version is now a must, since you have gone this far already.

I love the kevin flynn disk mod vid. I have just soldered 59 leds to the rim of my disk over a few days. I wanted to keep the light sequence the disk came with. I just have to solder the 8 inner single light spots and work out what to do with the c ring. I am thinking of a second switch and circuit to do the constant light option as well. Or might get another disk, gut it, and make a just light up version. I have been gathering ideas from this forum for weeks, it's been a great resource.

Hello *waves*

I've come out of lurkdom because I am hoping someone can help me with a decision. I've read the whole thread and I have built most of a Sam grid suit for my teenage son [if he grows anymore I'll scream! LOL!]. It's the EVA foam and another kind of foam, and considering I've never done anything like this before the materials have been great to work with. I've sealed it with 4 coats of watered down PVA glue. I've read that it'll need at least another two coats of that to seal it properly on a cosplay tutorial.

Anyway, I'm getting close to needing to 'rubberize' it and I was going to Plasti Dip it but having read that it can ruin the hard work I'm hesitant.

My construction hasn't had any heat applied for shaping which was one of the issues brought up with Plasti Dip in this thread.

Am I going to be better off buying liquid latex? And if so does it have to be the expensive body quality stuff or can I buy moulding grade latex with a black pigment added to it?

Also, anyone else here in the UK using El Wire/El Panels? And if so, where did you get them from. I ordered an evaluation kit to play with as I'm a complete novice with electrics and they haven't sent it yet. I'm going to give them a call. Are they reliable?

We're hoping to get to the London Comic Con in July? We're not gonna make it to the May one unfortunately. Well, not in costume anyway! :p

:)

Thanks guys! Yeah, I couldn't resist a photo with the toaster. xD

Hey, I've seen you today on deviantart in my messages in the Tron group!

Yep you probably did! xD I've been posting a lot of pictures from the shoot on there. ^^

LULU your so cute as quorra :love

Aww thanks! :$ I'm so glad I finally finished it. I'll be posting more photos on my deviantART account, Willowwolf23. ^^

Okay folks, need some advice with cutting EL Panel. It actually is Split Electrode, so I have to run a line to the outer edge. Problem is that the stuff is already laminated pretty tightly, so it's hard to get a connection straight to the Phosphor.

First piece is easy, there was a small bit of copper tape already on it from the adjoining piece. I melted away some of the laminate plastic with the soldering iron to expose the copper and soldered the wires directly on those. Lit up no problem:

But now there are three pieces that have no such luck. I tried burning away some of the laminate and putting down some copper tape to make the connection, but it didn't make a good enough connection. I didn't have anything to clip through the whole phosphor-laminate sandwich, so I improvised with staples. It actually made a good connection (although it took a couple of tries to line it up with the thin outer electrode line) and I tested it at each step.
TronPanel02.jpg

But I feared the wire coming loose from the prongs, so I thought I'd put a bead of solder on it to keep it together. BIG MISTAKE. After I did this, the panel would not light up at all, save for a tiny, tiny dot right next to the staple. I think the solder must have cooked the Phosphor.
TronPanel03.jpg

Anyone have suggestions of what kind of connectors to use--something I can buy at a hardware store, not some 10-cent bit of wire sold online for $3 each plus shipping? And how to connect it up to a Split-electrode panel?

I see no problem here, but soldering at the end as you said.
Staples work ok, I used them. Just wrap the wire around the staple as if you were wraping it with other wire and it shouldn't come off. It worked fine with me.
God bless staples.
There are other conectors, eyelets, mentioned here hundred times before.

Hello, i found a jacket similar to this one for 35 bucks and want to e.l. tape it out, any design suggestions?

its made of light nylon marerial and is one solid color, medium charcoal. I thought it'd be cool to light it up. It actually doesnt have the breast zippers or no big pockets and might consider the Daft Punk look but still would like some suggestions before i take it on

MRDigital is the guy to ask, he has hooked up some leather jackets with el tape that look fantastic, go back through this thread a few pages and you'll see his posts and photos.

Well its once again has been awhile from the last time I Have posted anything but on a good note I have actually started work on my costume. Here are some pics of the helmet so far. Let me know what you all think. Thanks.

Very nice! Would make a good "Young Flynn" jacket, as it has that motorcycle jacket feel, presumably without breaking the bank. Have any more info about it?

And yes, MrDigital's instructions are quite good and should work for this jacket too. Just try to keep everything lightweight so it doesn't stress the thinner nylon.

Its an I.N.C. jacket from Macy's. There were a few other I.N.C and Calvin Klein jackets like that for real cheap too, some faux leather and some light nylon type. All for under 100 bucks (must be time to clean their stock). Had to order my large cuz the biggest was a sz. medium and so waiting on that now.

Here's the one im gettin

Yes and no. Gams is technically correct on all points, but that isn't the way I will be doing it. I will be using all the existing connections. I will make one adapter that makes a molex to 2 pin quick connect for just one connection. All the others match up. Here a simplified diagram I whipped up of what I'm doing.

n9ppw.jpg

*****Oops. That should say Molex to 2 pin, not 2.1mm.******

Did you LF El Panel come with Molex connectors or those black plug n play connectors as per your diagram here? I had Patrick put on the Molex connectors to my El Panel and the inverter. Just curious why you had the black plug n play connectors pictured here.

I finished my costume last night (pics on facebook in signature line) with the new 12c power supply and the LF inverter. Just as I had feared the increased power was a good and bad thing.

Its powerful enough to light me up in daylight or a well light room and my EL still looks white.

But that power is too white and out does the SI Disc mod, making the colors not match up. SI mod it pale bule/white, EL is now warm white. Even if there was a way (different warm white LEDs) to make he disc match, I wouldnt want to as I don't even like the way the upped EL looks in the dark. Its just a blah white color. I much preferred the pale blue/cool white effect (in my avatar) it had under lower power, plus it matched and would increase the life of my EL.

So, since I do not want to be pink indoors, I suppose I will keep the upped power for the comic con and just put my 3v 2AA inverter back on for parties and Halloween.

Its a real bummer spending that much to find out it was better before. But I guess at least I won't be pink at Comic Con.

Hmmmmm well, I am happy to hear that the LF El Panel is very bright white to show off in the day light. I guess for my situation that is awesome news since I am using mine on my EOL Club waitress costume for SDCC.

but, I am in the same boat now as you with my Quorra costume. I will be using that same white El Panel for it and still good to know it will be bright white for the day time but, not liking what I hear about no matching SI Disc Mod. I don't like when the disc and your costume lights don't match.

I don't know of any other soultion to this. I don't want to dim down my Quorra light brightness either because I will be wearing it at SDCC in the day into the night time. Ugghhhhhh all these damn technical problems. So annoying!

I love the fact staples can make for a good split connection, but, is this Luminous Film El Panel Tape you are using? because if it is, then you can bend their El Panel tape to get angles, 1st folded over then over again to get the 90 degree angle. Not sure if that's what you are trying to do, to get angles or are you trying to make an extension to your piece of El Panel tape?

Thanks for the photos. Those jackets are a fine "close enough."

This isn't LuminousFilm, it's a panel from GlowHut: EL Panel I would have sprung for the "cuttable" version for a couple bucks more that had several connection points, but their layout didn't work with what I had in mind.

I have EL Tape from them that I am bending/folding to get the lines I want-- more at at 45-degree angle, so it's not QUITE so tidy --and binding these fold points with electrical tape. I thought I'd make some cutout shapes with the EL Panel to cover up these points. So I bought the A5 panel from GlowHut and cut it to size.

To illustrate old school:

Nice work BB! Like the EL Wire accents on the holes. Did that helmet come with the blue face shield, or did you do that yourself?

Thanks SiriusGraphics. The Blue face Shield was from a old scooter helmet I think. It had a crack in it and I made it worse when I attached it to the helmet hence why I ended up sculpting over part of the face shield. Ended up making it look better in the end.

Ahhhhh yes, Glowhut. I was originally going to go with them myself from the getgo but they don't sell their El Tape in the lengths I needed and I don't think they supplied White El Tape either. A custom order was going to cost a bit, then I discovered the LF product. So happy I did, it is way more solid bright white than the Glowhut glow.

Everyone should go with LF to light their Tron costumes in my opinion if you are on a budget as in can't afford the actual lighting used in the movie ;)
