Tron Legacy Costume

Ugh just because their suits light up doesn't make it Tron....just future-tech. There are people here that have actual tron suits that use reflective tape, EL wire, light tape, and other methods to recreate costumes worn in the movie, or derived off of that specific style. The only thing I see in comparison are black and light tape.

Ozzy should totally chomp the kid's head off at the end...please someone make this happen.

elsewhere...
I'm starting to seriously regret not purchasing the kevin flynn disc I saw the past 2 times I've been inside Target...2 different Target stores, 2 different months, and both were just sitting there among sam and rinslzer discs...sigh...once the roads thaw I'll check again.

I have tested some latex on fabric again and thought I'd just give a quick update :)

Use a very light very stretchy fabric as a base! I just tested coating some mid-weight lycra and it resulted in a very unstretchy fabric. The material I had originally tested was a very light (to the point of not being easy to machine sew at all) and it resulted in a nice medium weight product. Having looked at the fine wrinkles in the screen used and display Siren costumes I do think the base fabric was quite light as well.

I used a paint brush and the single layer looks nice and tidy but it also soaks in. I really do think a large coverage air brush will be best.

I am going to be trying the liquid latex I just ordered on some light weight stretchy fabric, white and light grey, for the SIREN costume myself. Will report my results as soon as I get it. Thanks for the report on using light weight fabric too. Thankfully the swatches I have are light weight fabric.

Excellent interview Annisse! :thumbsup

How is the HEX fabric holding up for ya? :)

Thank you, and thanks to the others about my interview, was fun. My HEX fabric is holding up great and it certainly makes a difference in my costume. I think ppl comment more on your HEX print 1st than my actual Quorra suit :) makes all the difference those fine details to the costume.

Please remember, when you are ready with producing your HEX print. Still would like to work together with you to make Quorra costume, or even Sam underbody suits for interested cosplayers. Your HEX print and my sewing the suits up!

I used POWO with mine. It looks pink when off, no doubt about it, but when it's on it gave the lighting effect I was looking for, and it is brighter than the WOWO.

I can confirm as well that the POWO is definitely brighter than the WOWO even with El WIRE. I just spent a few good long hours pulling out the El Wire on both my Quorra arms and right leg and replacing it with POWO High Bright Wire. I totally regret now using that Standard WOWO El Wire. Had no idea what a difference it would make and with only one inverter. I lost so much brightness on my costume. I took care of that problem now and using at least two inverters and two 12V (8AA) battery packs for maximum brightness.

I think I found a starting point for the disc mount; Ready? Paper dixie bowl.:rolleyes I will probably add a few other items and cut and expand it slightly, but it is almost an exact fit. Here are a few shots of it.

That is exactly what I did with my Quorra disc hub mount. Had a kitchen bowl underneath my suit to give my chest armor that raised look on my back like Quorra's. Worked great!

Thanks Annisse that helps, is a great difference in on color between the two? I'm still wondering if the POWO is noticeably pink on and the WOWO more of a blue white. :confused

can someone say what is POWO/WOWO is I feel like a noober :p
It has to do with the color of the EL material. POWO = Pink off white on WOWO = White off white on. If you look at some of the pictures posted on the previous page you'll see what I mean.

You won't see any pink when the power is turned on. You WILL notice with POWO, that the more EL sheet you try running off your power supply, the more blue you will see. It will also start to become dim.

It is a matter of preference as to how much you want to run off of 1 inverter. A rule of thumb for me is 1, 12v inverter for each 8 1/2 X 11" sheet.

For those of you who are using EL wire, what size of wire are you going with, and does it seem bright enough? I am planning on using the method of diffusing the EL wire as eddieadryr shows earlier in the thread, but trying to back it with superbright reflective tape and then diffuse through a shower curtain. I found that some people in the thread went with 2.3mm, does anyone know how much brighter it gets when you go from 2.3 to 2.6 or 5.0? I am looking and getting from cool neon, and getting the high bright wire.

Hey all!
I have been following this post for the past two months, and I have to say I am just floored with how much knowledge you all have. I am brand new to costume making. I have a little experience with sewing and building things but feel like I can do so much more now that I have gained so much of the knowledge you have all provided! I plan on making a costume of Tron for this up coming Halloween. After all of the research, I feel that foam will be the best for shaping the armor. I will be designing it very soon, and will post pictures as soon as I have concept designs going! Thanks again for all of the information you have provided.

For those a bit on the fence about ELTape over ELWire, just a sample of Green ELTape from GlowHut.com

I bought some el tape but, I have no idea how I would go about making it do anything but go in a straight line. Seem like El Wire would work a lot better even though the el tape gives off a good glow.

As I understand it, ELTape is just that.. a straight line item. You can mask off parts to get effects and turns, but it is restricted to your tape width. You can run up to 3m worth of the tape off a standard 12v Inverter (as I am told by the retailer).

This item is 1.4m long (about 5ft), is very close to green when turned off, is about 1/2in wide (slightly less on the glow area) and costs $12.00 on eBay or direct from GlowHut.com.

I plan to use this stuff in white for my Young Flynn jacket.

The EL tape for Flynn jacket would work perfect, as it's a straight line at least. Some of the armour suits have varying width of it, and changing direction part way through.

I hope to do EL sheet, cut it to shape, running different sections off of a couple invertors.

Darn ID disc situation though. I want to set it up with Netduino, but trying to figure out how to fit a 2.8" x 2.1" Netduino, into an area of the disc that is less than 2" width.

That's my same problem. I like how the tape looks, but I couldn't use it on my chest armor, as there is barely any space for just a straight line.

As for flickering, any interruption of the power source can do that. Just wire in something that strobes the output of the power to the inverter.

Thanks, what kind of a component could this be? Sorry I have only very basic electrical knowledge :lol

ive seen both and the color is almost the same. the powo has no pink showing when turned on.

Ok cool :)

Thanks a lot! So I guess the WOWO is a solid white no matter what current you apply to it? I should also say that I'm not actually building a costume but I have something else in mind inspired by the movie. I can run the entire setup via mains power so number of inverters aren't really an issue for me. I had to ask here because this thread is pretty much the best source for EL knowlege on the internet. :lol

get a 12 inch x 1.25 inch panel and use electrical tape to make a shape. sounds ghetto but it worked really well on mine and it looks pretty awesome
