Tron Legacy Costume

Well, I survive the West Hollywood Carnival, and so did my costume (for the most part). Everyone loved it and wanted to take pictures. As expected the batteries died about 2 hours in so when I went back to the apartment to change them I ended up crashing from exhaustion. So my suggestion for those that are out and about with your costumes keep the batteries with you and you can just do a quick change out when need be. I had 2 empty pockets so that's where I'll store them for next time. Now on to the premiere in December!!

Had a great first ride with my costume over the weekend here in LA. The first night we went to a masquerade at LACMA and the costumes were absolutely off the hook (I recommend it if you are in LA next year). The second night in WeHo was a bit strenuous, but that wasn't due to the costume so much as the sheer walking you have to endure. I was mostly worried about the boots around the knees but they held up. I did have an inverter rubbing up against my shin towards the end that bugged me, but that's an easy fix.

In general I'll tell you that I'm really impressed with the durability of the EL-Wire, especially the thicker gauge. I used small inverters at the extremities for safety and hid them all over the place, making comfort a non-issue. The primary inverter near the chest was thrown in a traveler's wallet that goes around the neck and was easy to conceal within the motorcycle armor. Man, I expected the lights to go out all night and they absolutely took every kind of ergonomic trauma I could throw at them. I had people wanting to touch the lights quite a bit, so I'm glad I went with 6300 for a glue application.

As for the reflective material, my thoughts are mixed. With a camera phone in dark light the results weren't up to par for me. Then again, as my friend got more and more progressively drunk, the lens fogged out and that definitely worked against quality. My one real heartbreak from last night was that my pics with Daft Punk didn't turn out! Anyway, with a good camera in the right conditions, I was happy enough. However I'd rather inlay blue reflective material later. I really do want to thank everyone here for the incredible ingenuity on display. Can't wait to see more pics!

On the EL Wire, if I can get it cheap the costume I am designing should be able to add the EL Wire later if I am happy with results (and cheap source), I am planning on powering the chest/back, each arm & the legs separately with the inverters hidden under some craft foam armor piece or built into a belt design, I will leave hollow parts or add later.

Okay here some pictures from the costume party I went to. I was not able to complete the arms and leg lighting, what you see is what I was able to quickly put together for the party but I plan on having a whole working suit by the premiere of tron. My friend took some of me in the dark but I am still wating on her, so I will post them up soon.

OK I REALLY want to go now that everyone's going, but I have a production meeting already planned. What time this SAT? and HOW THE HECK are we going to be able to sneak in, in costume?!?

As you all know my costume is NOT very easy to disguise. ;)

ElecTRONica doesn't start till 6pm and ends when the park closes. Gotta check for this Sat. but either 10 or 11pm.

What I did was wear a long coat over my Quorra costume. As soon as I passed the main gate entry and was in, took my coat off and that was it.

I suggest doing the same, unless you hear otherwise. If you have your helmet perhaps put it in a back pack or bag to carry it in.

I mentioned on an earlier post that I did see a guy in costume with El Wire. He was not one of the workers there. So if he got in the park fine then I assume he did the same thing, hid it got in and changed in the park or maybe since ElecTRONica is out now or because it was the weekend before Halloween, the park didn't care if we wore costumes in there because of the Halloween events going on.

Now with Halloween over, well, it is going to be more of a risk, but I am down for it ;) hey if they don't let us in costume, bring some clothes to change into and dump everything in a locker.

Or we can hit Downtown Disney UVA bar, have a drink and show the costumes of there. Either way, it will be a fun awesome experience! :D

Disney thinks of everything:

Are there restrictions on types of clothing or makeup that Guests may wear, or tattoos that can be displayed, while visiting the Disneyland Resort?
Yes. The goal of the Disneyland Resort is to provide a safe, secure environment for our Guests to enjoy. Clothing, makeup and tattoos that may distract from the Disneyland Resort experience or that may pose a safety or health issue are not permitted:
  • Clothing or tattoos with obscene, lewd or offensive language, graphics or designs
  • Clothing that could be construed as indecent, exposing excessive portions of skin that may be viewed as inappropriate for a family environment (e.g., string bikini tops and bottoms, G-strings)
  • Bare feet
  • Weapons or accessories that appear to be weapons (i.e., bullet belts)
  • Clothing or accessories that drag on the ground and create a potential tripping hazard
  • Costumes on Guests over the age of 9 (e.g., wedding dresses, period costumes and Halloween costumes — with the exception of special events). Guests under the age of 10 may wear certain types of costumes.
  • Sharp or pointed accessories that may cause injury
  • Masks or makeup that could be construed as part of a costume
  • Exception: Attire intended to identify those wearing it is acceptable (e.g., military uniforms, cultural attire)
This information is subject to change without notice.

I'm going to contact Disney and see if we can get some sort of special allowance since we all did this as fans of the movie, and won't be up to anything malicious or negative. We just want to have a good time and party in costume to show our support for the movie.

Hey guys! totally impressed with all the great costumes! I'm so glad I decided to make mine, even though I started about 6 hours before my Halloween party started, and I was only able to make the body/vest portion. I didn't have time to do the arms or the legs. Still I think it's easily recognizable. Also it was a great learning experience so now I know how to make it better next time. It definitely needs to be more flexible/durable for dancing and when drunken friends decide to tug on your costume. I initially wanted to make a vest for the top but its really hard to do with EVA foam since it doesn't exactly stretch, and my head is pretty big. I ended up making the back and front separate and then using velcro to attach the two pieces at the shoulder. This makes lining up the lines harder, especially since I didn't have a manikin to help me with fitting (definitely need one of those!) anyways enough talk. here's my costume:

Pictures in the dark or not....that's darn fine work, eddie.

Here's a shot of the back. You can tell I was rushing towards the end, I needed to get it done so I could go to the party. It's not accurate, but I was okay with as long as there was a resemblance, and here I was relying more on the strips glowing than the actual shape of the lines. The tape I used doesn't really bend, so its hard to do large circular shapes, or just circular shapes in general. For the smaller circles I just used two strips taped next to each other to make a square and then colored in the parts I didn't want to glow with a black sharpie.

Compass I can definately understand. You want to make sure you won't be hassled getting into Disney with your costume on. Even once I was in, I was worried the security was going to tell me you can't wear a costume in here. There are quite a few security guards all over in ElecTRONica. They didn't tell me anything.

If I don't get in with my costume, no biggie, I will be bummed about it but no big deal. You are flying in for this so yes, maybe contacting Guest Services is a good idea at DCA and see who you have to talk to and ask for permission for us to get into ElecTRONica in costume.

You can tell them that we will only be going to ElecTRONica and no where else in the park if that helps. HAHA not like we can go on any rides anyway. :p Can't move much in mine or hardly dance, I imagine you and the others costumes are the same deal ;)

Can you even make it out by this Sat. to join us?

Thanks! It's actually orange reflective tape. I was trying to match the deep yellow that CLU2 wears and this was the best match.

Excellent job wired1! You look better than the TRON Evolution CLU2!

I've been having trouble tracking down a good reflective tape supplier. Can you tell me where you got your orange tape and what product is it? Looks grand!

A couple pics of me at ElecTRONica - DCA in my Quorra costume.

Soooo much more fun when you go in costume. I hope it will all work out for us to get in this Sat. :D

anybody have patterns for the chest armour of sam's? I want to make a foam version without using motocross armour.

Oh and I'll post pics of mine tommorow.

As for ElecTronica. between Annisse, her friends, and me and my girlfriend...there will be alot of programs running around. lol

For those interested in Tron Legacy. There's an interview with Olivia Wilde about her Ideas behind Quorra Chracter at www. IGN.com. Click on movies on the right hand corner. Also listen to the Podcast for the new movies coming out.
I loved everyones outfits. I went to a Hallowen party and there was about three TRON outfits. Nothing to really photograh well though. There was a girl dressed as one the Sirens. She sewed two diffrent lycra spandex suits together to get the right design. It looked great. She didn't have it lighted. I invited her to read our forum. So we may hear more details ,I hope! My outfit was incomplete. My El lighing was not enough. Plus it was time consuming taking off the Glow paint. I was able to get a blue TRON T-Shirt, by HURLEY, at PAC SUN that glows in the dark in a blue color. It needs to have a lot of light though to charge. This was pretty cheap. For those looking for body suits. I found some Bicycle clothing. It's spandex with Lycra. It's very breathable. I paid about $50.00 dollars on sale. It was an older design. It looks similar to those suits pictured in the movie pictures(Without the armour).Best of luck to all still working on the suit. Remember we are all here to help each other!

Annisse...you should tweet those pics to Olivia. She's been replying and re posting some pics of other fans who aren't even a shadow of your amazingness!

Can I pester anyone to post up some design templates? I bought my design paper and need my wife to mark it out on me :) I ask as it will help her mark out on the paper where the light strips etc will be placed on body (not sure she'll cope with the photo's from forum)

I am using EVA Foam to make armor, the arms and legs are going to be tricky I think, using pattern paper to create a layout to cut out EVA foam and wrap around undersuit material. I am using a cheaper EVA foam as a base (painting black as can't get it in black :S and the going to put the good layer on top (cut to pattern of armor with channels for Reflective tape, might even just whack tape on base and as top layer goes on I won't have to trip it to shape).

I have a sports tournament this weekend so I'll be tied up with that, unfortunately. :(

I'm all up for flying out there sometime. For example, if there's a midnight showing that Thursday of TRON I wouldn't mind going in costume that night, partying until 11 PM at ElecTRONica and then changing quickly at the hotel before heading to whatever theater is showing it.

Otherwise, anytime there's a large group of us that can all co-ordinate together I can get there with a few days notice.
