Tron Legacy Costume

didn't know how to do that Spoiler link to put quotes under the cut so they are not so long in my post here so I did it like this, hope everyone can see my comments. Sorry this looks like it turned kinda annoying to read with the scroll bar....

Code:
Eveningarwen, what width LF did you use for your Castor's costume? I see you have the ring, half circle cut. I assume maybe you used a let's say 4 inch width then just cut your design into the Lite Tape?

Awesome job on your Siren suit and Castor costume and you got to rubberize your suit, did you use casting latex? My mistake was using the liquid latex, the type you paint on your skin... BIG MISTAKE! I think I posted about that disaster awhile back in this thread.

All of you that I am seeing light up your Siren costumes and rubberizing them, are making me want to upgrade mine... don't know if I am ready for all that work, not to mention money I'll have to drop into that. Still not over the intensive labor I had to put into lighting up my Quorra costume but I love it so much more now that it lights up not to mention works properly and doesn't short out.

Everyone lighting up their Tron suits, if you are soldering, using Wire Glue, or however you are wiring your suits. Use LIQUID NAILS, found at Home Depot or any hardware store, to put over your connections. Liquid nails is flexible, Epoxy is not. After many, many breaks and issues with my Quorra suit, I read someone say to use a glue that is strong yet flexible. With all the moving around something like epoxy or super glue will just break your wiring at the connection point. I put some LIQUID NAILS on all my solder connection points. No more shorting problems or broken wires.

Another good thing you did right away Eveningarwen was seal your LF with clear tape. Glad you found some finally. I was going to suggest to you the 99 cent store, they have tons of clear packing tape.

I never sealed my cut LF strips I was making on my Quorra suit, I was new to using Lite Tape, El Tape, any of that, had no idea I had to seal those cut edges. Shorting issues everywhere. When I finally sealed them, shorting stopped.

So many lessons learned creating a light up Tron costume. UGGGHHHH! not ready to tackle lighting my Siren suit up just yet ;)

and yeah, I have the same issue with the joint connections in my Lite Tape. Everywhere I added the copper eyelet connectors, you can see them on my suit. I hate it, but there was no other way to deal with getting the angles.

I am thinking now maybe by stripping very carefully the back of the LF clear laminate coating off. I can do that and lay a strip of Lite Tape across the part where my joint connections are with some Liquid Nails. It will cover the copper eyelet connectors. I am going to experiment in a couple weeks and will post back here with pictures to show what I am thinking may work to cover up those eyelet hole joint connections to look cleaner.

[quote="Eveningarwen, post: 1966938"]where should the eyelets go so they are not so visible? In everyone elses costume with el tape I don't see any of the eyelet holes. How is everyone hiding/placing them?

[IMG]http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y88/eveningarwen/DSC_0634.jpg[/IMG][IMG]http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y88/eveningarwen/DSC_0635.jpg[/IMG]

I don't want them to be visible at all and while for the back circle sections of castor and gem we can hide these eyelets a bit, for some of the front bits (like castors circles) we wont be able to. I've noticed folks using copper tape.....is this so you can have a connection that isn't visible? Do you peel back the protective tape on the el tape and then stick the copper tape in there then reseal it and then connect the eyelet and wire to the copper tape? Sorry for all the questions I'm just so baffled at how everyone has been able to hide their connections.
[/QUOTE]

Canobi THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this! :D Where can one find this Wire Glue? As soon as I saw your post, it gave me the idea how to "fix" I guess really, cover up, my copper connector points on my Quorra Lite Tape joint angle connections.

I still hate to this day that you can see those stupid copper connectors on my Lite Tape at all my angles. I tried to hide them with a latex layer which covers my Lite Tape on the sides but just couldn't hide them all.

This wire glue may make my idea work. Will report back when I try my hiding the copper connectors idea out.

[quote="Canobi, post: 1967552"]Hi all. There are different types of EL tape, so I guess it's ok to do with the type I use. I recently bought some from a company in china, on arrival I noticed that one of the lengths was laminated and the others weren't. One of the unlaminated ones even had the very thin protective layer coming off all over the place. Which sounds bad but actually isn't. I can now put a connection anywhere along the tape I need to. The laminated tape on the other hand is a different story. It's a nightmare trying to pry the layers apart, and yes, the connected area is a bit spotty. As for glue..... I use something called Wire Glue, it's a carbon based glue that when dry is totaly conductive. I then add a spot of apoxy resin as a coating to strengthen the hold. No soldering required. You'll need to hold the connections together until it's dry, and it's incredibly easy to get it everywhere, so handle with utmost care. I use a toothpick to place little blobs over the place I want to join:

[IMG]http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee395/Can-obi/683cfbe2.jpg[/IMG]

The black tape was added to help strengthen the join

[IMG]http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee395/Can-obi/bd55f47f.jpg[/IMG]

Tested it and it's not bad, but to the naked eye the join is visible

[IMG]http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee395/Can-obi/625ed5b6.jpg[/IMG]

But not to a camera at a slight distance

[IMG]http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee395/Can-obi/d95996f5.jpg[/IMG]

Now I know what type of EL tape/sheet to shop for I'm going to do this as a costume

ARC, just went back into the thread regarding your post of the drawing of your EOL Club pole dancer drawing idea. I can't believe I missed out on commenting on that long ago when you 1st posted it!

That is a SUPER BAD ASS idea! and now you made it come to life! Girl this is awesome! and so me! :D

I have been trying to think up an idea of a TRON inspired coo! dancing club type costume and have not come up with anything yet. I love what you came up with here!

So wish I could have been in NO Halloween weekend to see you dance in this! So, did any customers come in and totally get you were wearing a Tron inspired costume? Way to go with this idea! :thumbsup so original! I love it to death! :D

Oh and as I mentioned above. If you are still having trouble with your collar wiring and boot wiring or anywhere on your costume. When you solder the wires, just add some LIQUID NAILS to the soldered connection.

It totally saved my life. My Quorra suit no longer shorts out and the Liquid Nails totally provides a flexible water proof connection.

I wish I could STICK a tutorial of everything I have learned in this thread for all future Tron costumers to see. There is just too much in here to search around for at this point. HAHA!

ARC, please post more pics of your EOL Club pole dancer costume when you can! Can't get enough of it! :D

[quote="ARC, post: 1968635"]Ok so we finally got this thing put together.... It seems the post office played rugby with it though since as soon as I got it out of the box it had a bunch of problems. The collar isn't lighting up as you can see. I've tried multiple fixes but it's breaking my heart so badly that I have given up for the night in an effort to save my sanity. There will be a couple tweaks tomorrow before work but this is pretty much it:

I offered to watermark them for Matt since I've been seeing an increase in Tron-suit plagiarism, not here of course, but mostly on facebook. I want to make sure he gets credit for all his hard work!

Sorry about the lack of makeup, it's super late and I'm frustrated and just not feelin' it. I reeeealllly hope I get some pictures taken at work tomorrow before the suit crashes and burns. We fully expect it to not last through the night, but plans are in the works for a better one for next year!

Anyway.... what do you think?[/QUOTE]

[quote="tlr, post: 1972808"]Here's my Daft Punk Tron Legacy costume!

I bought the suit from cosplayhouse.com and added EL tape from electroluminescence-inc.com I used double sided scotch tape to attach them to the reflective strips already on the costume.

The helmet was made with a costume army helmet, with cardstock pieces covered in fiberglass resin and bondo, then sanded, primed, and painted. SO COO! :D and what did you use to make your hair blond? Assuming you colored it? Or is your hair blond already..... lucky. My lace front wig just didn't look realistic on me so, I am ditching it.

No way am I bleaching my hair, it will fall out for sure LOL! and I hate those temp. colored hair sprays. They look like crap and make your hair all hard. I am still gonna try one, I just ordered, just to test it out one more time. It is BeWild in Seberian White.

If I can't find a decent wig or spray on technique, I am afraid I will just have to stick with the dark haired Siren look. I REALLY want to be Gem! Even got myself all the MAC makeup which was used to create Beau Garrett's look in the movie.

r2tincan, Try using a 12V rechargeable battery pack next time you wear your costume. It is somewhere in this thread one of the members here told me about it and it is a beautiful thing.

Will last you up to 6 hours. Save you tons on buying all those batteries not to mention the tedious process of having to change out all those batteries in your battery pack every time they run out.

I can't find the link offhand right now, but do a search in this thread the rechargable battery pack. I got two of them. When one dies out after 6 hours and I want to keep going, just plug in your other one and you're ready to go again in an instant! It is a beautiful thing, as I said already :P so excited when I found out about it!

[quote="r2tincan, post: 1976733"]Here is how my costume turned out... Thanks to everyone for their help!

Hey Annisse!

For Castor we bought some 2" wide tape at like 6" long I think for the circles on front and for the back we bought 2 feet of 6" wide tape. That 2 feet is enough for both of our costumes. That was the most sad thing about my costume, we have all the tape just didn't have the time so it's just sitting there......mocking me......lol!

My fiance did all of the lights and he was actually really confused as to why the solder points desperately mattered. The way he wired them to the eyelets could basically be enough to hold the connection even without the solder. And when he did solder that was all he did, nothing else to go on top and he didn't have any issues with breaks or loose connections. We're thinking about putting together a build thread on Castor and Gem with everything we learned from this thread and on our own to see if it can help condense down all the info that is in this thread. It'll take some time though but we took quite a few WIP pics of the wiring and how it went together.

It's funny you mention seeing your eyelets because I was looking at your pics going "Look!!!!! You can't see any of her eyelets and she used the same stuff.....What are we doing wrong?!?!" :lol:lol We'll probably leave Castor as is because it still looks great in person and in photos but Gem he is going to take his time and figure out the whole invisible copper tape thing.

As for rubberizing I did in fact use liquid latex. I knew that you had issues with it and I wanted to buy the balloon rubber from this place I found but I just didn't have time to deal with having to find a way to dye it the right colors and all that. So we sprayed me in white and originally we were going to spray the grey sections in grey latex but found out that trying to mask off the sections was not going to work. So instead my fiance sat there and slowly painted with acrylic paint all my grey sections lol!!!!! It was kind of a nightmare but again....we were just running out of time. I'm already planning on remaking my siren suit and we're thinking about getting wet look spandex in white and grey and then after it's sewn together spray clear latex (or possibly casting/balloon latex if it comes in clear) on me while wearing the suit. I'm hoping that if clear latex does dry clear then the grey will show through and no need to rubberize with two different colors. But that's going to take loads of experimenting......and truth be told....I'm not sure the rubberizing looks that much different to the normal spandex. I mean it definitely feels different but......meh......

And yeah my hair is blonde and I have loads of it so I didn't have to wear a wig or any extensions or anything. Probably the easiest thing about his costume was the hair and makeup lol! Unfortunately my Castor is not blonde and the whole white hair spray just really doesn't work. We're going to need to find a wig for him for when we do conventions next year.

And I thought I'd post this photo as I know if it was in this thread while we were doing lights it would have helped so much. In case someone has no clue what we mean about seeing the eyelet connections at all the angles this photo shows you what we mean. The bad focus and lighting in this pic is why they showed up:
BdwVO.jpg

In most photos the connections just blur away but in person the suit looks more like this. When you're working with El Tape and not something like El Panel I guess it's hard to do these shapes without those connections.

hey im going to a tron party and im the one who has to go as rinzler or clu so can you hook me up im a medium in mens and a 36x30 in pants so please help.

Hi all:)

Eveningarwen, I got my wire glue from eBay, it's such handy stuff for certain situations.

Shogunvader, yup, sorry. I forgot to mention the clear tape bit. Thanks for pointing that out.

Annisse, good one for the suggestion for using liquid nails, very cool idea.

Loving all the work on here, keep it up everyone:thumbsup

Hey dudes and dudettes. So after a couple months doing extensive research here on with the movie itself I finally finished my costume in time for Halloween and wanted to share some photos with y'all.

I'm quite pleased with how it turned out but I think I'm still gonna do some changes (replace foam sheet with new ones, secure batteries to back, etc.)

Thanks and enjoy!

Really cool. What did you use for lighting?

Is that all foam?

It's 80 ft, yes that's right I said 80 haha, of EL wire. Diffused with shower curtain in Eddies method. And the armor itself is upholstry foam. 1/8" thick I think. I could only find white which ended up being a major problem since after I spray painted it the armor would crack and flake off the black. Which is why I want to fix it up a bit.

What color/size EL wire are you using?

Thanks for your kind words. I'll try and get some more pics posted with descriptions of the progress and planning in the next couple of days.

As for the EL wire, I used 2.6mm high bright aqua color. 4 plug n' play systems each at 20ft. Powered by 4 fisher drivers at 8 batteries each. Yeah...ridiculous. hahaha. Bought it from Cool Neon.

Hey Annisse!

:love you two look great in this pic! Love it to death! :D

As for the eyelets showing. Yep. That is exactly how mine look. Like I said. I have an idea how to cover up the angled eyelet area with adding a strip of the Lite Tape on top across like a bar. Involving the wire glue that was mentioned here and maybe using some liquid nails to hold the strip all in place. Have no idea if this will work. Once I order the wire glue I will experiment with this idea.

I'll let you all know and I'll take pics of the steps to demonstrate. If it works, close up you'll see the strip of added Lite Tape which will now lite up along with the rest of line. I am hoping the wire glue will conduct the current threw that added strip of Lite Tape which will lay over the copper eyelets once the clear laminate is peeled away from the back.

Yesterday I went to Comikaze Expo at the LA Convention center as Siren Gem. I tried my BeWild brand temp hair spray color in Seberian white since I no longer like the look of my lace front blond wig.

You cold tell my hair was sprayed but it looks pretty decent in the photos and I am gonna use this method to get the Gem look from now on.

I hate temp sprays as they make your real hair look all hard and dried. But the BeWild brand seems to be a little better as well as the chemicals used. It doesn't smell horrid like other cheaper brands I have tried cuz they don't use butane fluid.

I'll post some pics or go on Flickr if you like to see some pics ppl posted of me as Gem so you can see. If you like it. Maybe try it on your Castor to lighten his hair. Truthfully I think I was only able to get away with it was cuz my hair was up in that bun and plastered back. Longer hair is when those temp sprays look no good when spraying an entire head of hair. I used the entire 3.5oz. can on my hair yesterday! Everytime I want to be Gem it's gonna cost me like $7 bucks to get a can of that stuff :p

Lol aww thanks! I really like that pic to which is why I wish the lighting were better. We'll just make sure to get awesome couple pics at DCon next year lol!

Also that is an interesting idea for covering up the eyelets. Definitely would like to see/hear how that goes. And we'll keep everyone posted on our method with the copper tape and seeing if the whole tape can be lit up that way without having to eyelet them together. Also I don't know if you can tell but the bottom lights on his legs are actually pieced together as well but with staples instead of eyelets and those worked really well too. It could be because the laminate we used to seal the tape was super thick (it's used to protect cars) so there's lots for the staple to get stapled into without wiggling loose. So hopefully between the copper tape for the initial connection and the staples something can work out there too.

And I'll definitely give that spray you mentioned a try. We totally had cheap $2 hairspray that smelled of death lol so if that works better then it's worth it for us to try. I don't mind doing a wig but I still always feel that unless your wig is some $3000 human hair lace front and you have a pro team styling it when it's on that they never look the same....at least not ones that are pushed back like Castor which is why I'm still wary of going the wig route.

And to add to Annisse's shout out for votes on the Halloween contest I wanted to also add that there are quite a few Tron costumes in there and while my fiance and I would love votes as well I also say to go vote for whichever Tron you like! This is a huge thread so us Tron costumes should be able to give the others a run for their money!

Here is the fold I used to hide my eyelets.

If anyone is having problems attaching eyelets, I found this tool at Michael's which will evenly split eyelets that are not scored to split evenly. I used the copper plated eyelets from the metallic pack and soldered the wire directly to it.

Eveningarwen, here is a quick attempt to improve the lighting. (May have too much red, let me know what you think.)
