Tron Legacy Costume

Annisse, kick ass work there. I know oh too well of people not quite getting a costume. So many people walked up to me as Mothman wanting to know what exactly I was.

For all of you who have had a lot of experience with EL Wire:

Is brightness or longevity hindered at all when using these 3-way and 4-way
splitters I've seen on eBay?

I didn't think much of it at the time, but recently I began thinking maybe you would lose brightest if you combine long sections of wire with shorter ones, all being attached to a splitter, running from the same power source. Related to that, would shorter sections get over-powered, or would the power be distributed appropriately by the splitter? Say, if you were using a 8xAA 12V power source.....

Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Brightness and Lifespan are based on the total overall length of actual ELWire that will be glowing, not how many you have split all over the place with 2-ways, 3-ways, etc. Most ELWire is rated for 8000+hours at the minimum (as last I noticed 10,000+ is not uncommon).
Basically means 4-5 years at heavy use.

I recently tried adding 5feet of ELTape to my suit, just to see the effect of the added load.. dropped my overall ELTape brightness by over 50% and ELWires by about 30%. Keeping in mind that my Sound Driver is rated for up to 60feet and already has 8ft of ELWire and 6ft of ELTape (equal to 'about' 40ft of ELWire in power use). The added 5ft of Extra ELTape was like making it a total of 80-90ft on a 60ft driver. :confused

Do keep in mind that all drivers have a min/max rating, so be sure not to under drive the unit with too little ELwire/Tape or you can burn out the drver. Putting too much ELstuff on the driver will simply make it all dimmer and dimmer as you go beyond its rated max length.

Thanks for all your comments everyone on my Real World Quorra outfit, much appreciated! :)

I do notice when I use a 2 splitter for instance and I plug in one El Wire plug set then the next set, 2nd plug, into the splitter, my 1st El Wire set does get dimmer.

On my Quorra suit was even worse. I have a 7 splitter going on there. Another reason I am changing it out to LuminousFilm.com product. I can only fit one inverter on my Quorra suit. Alot of members have two-three inverters going. I tried a 2nd inverter to handle the load of all my El Wire and it just got too frustrating with all the wiring from the inverter not being long enough to reach back to the El Wire. I am getting tired of dealing with it and all the resoldering. So pulling it all out and replacing it.

I think the LuminousFilm inverters handle differently than El Wires. I think just ONE of the LuminousFilm inverters, depending you get the correct one to handle the length of lite tape you get, can power all your lite tape brightly. I may be wrong, gotta talk to Patrick at LF about this.

But all I know is that LF Lite Tape is gonna be A HELLA lot brighter than my diffused El Wire I got going on right now and more solidly lit up looking too. No more hot spots like when you diffuse El Wire with the shower curtain.

Thank you gams001 and Annisse....you pretty much just confirmed what
I was already thinking, just needed some piece of mind and whatnot...so thank you =]
Wow, Annisse quoted my post =]
I've been lurking on here/working on and gathering items for my Sam costume for a few months already. i'll be posting pics of my progress.
Just finished installing my disc mod kit from Soulinertia...WOW!!!!!!!
Those kits he makes are freaking awesome!! I highly recommend getting one for
anyone with a deluxe identity disc!!

Part of me wants to drop my current setup and order some stuff from Luminous. However, the other part of me keeps telling myself "You've spent $150 on Lighting alone, and you'd be starting from scratch"

Just a note. Since this thread has long passed the "costume planning" stage, we have change the title to simply "Tron Legacy Costume."

Oh,

Though I do think many newcomers to this thread have just started planning their Tron costumes for this coming Halloween.

Thanks for the feedback Marc! Good to hear.

Hey Soulinertia, the man of the "great idea"!! ;)

Any update of your costume? I would love to see when you have it!

Got my EL panel in from Glowhut. Looks nice. I cut it up into four circles that I was planning to mount onto my boots for the Flashback Flynn look. Cuts easily and overall nice to work with.

On a side note, It lights up a bit more blue than I expected. I am verifying with Glowhut if this panel is considered Bule/white or White/white. If its technically Blue/White then it could save alot of trouble going with the same color tape since White/white is hard to come by. Though I thought I was buying White/White.

Anyone have Blue on/White of tape from Glowhut? Does it look like mine?

MisterD: I got the Blue EL Tape from GlowHut and it is significantly "BLUER" than the EL Panel I just received from them. I'm pondering sending it back to get the white version and just try to find a color overlay to match the tape.

A question about cutting up the Panel for individual elements: I see the Scribe Line going all around the outside of the A4 Panel. How would I maintain this if I need to cut this panel into 4-6 smaller pieces? Would I have to keep a piece of that neutral side of the Scribe Line on each piece?

Thanks,

Just be sure you have one set of leads per item you make. You can cut it anyway you like. The panel is not split electrode and therefore does not have a scribe line. If you look at my circles you will see that each one has a set of leads.

Mr.Digital.. got the Hub. My heart-felt thanks. It's exactly the same layout I was working on this weekend, so it seems great minds.. :)

Just glad I could help. Hope it suits your needs!

I got my disc all gutted out this weekend. I'm just waiting on my LF tape to arrive, and my SI disc mod. Almost done!

So yesterday, my 4 yera old kid supermans off the bed holding a foam sword by the blade in front of him. He lands on his belly and slides as I wonder what the heck he's doing.
Then he asks me when I'm making his costume. Then it clicks, the light cycle arena!
"you want to be buzz lightyear for halloween? No. Wolverine? No. I want a costume like yours. But I want blue." Hmm, Tron? too much work, Anon? looks great, but again a lot of work for him to outgrow. How about Tron Wolverine? No. I look at the x-men wolverine costume and reconsider that EL'd piping is not "tron" enough. But a loose fitting leather jacket would be ideal, so I push for the Wolverine concept. Besides, it's way cooler than a civilian program.
So while we watch Legacy, I pick up on the various environmental cues and sketch up a new costume design. If Wolverine appeared on the grid, how would the sirens dress him?
The glowing acrylic claws are a given, but the costume..........

Thanks,

I bought my El tape from Glowhut and I should of gotten the panels as well to make the circles on my Quorra costume. I would get it now but I can't as my convention is in 3 days o.0 So I have to figure out how to make my thin el tape work for a circle. Sigh I know I can cut it up and make it work I just dunno if I have that much time lol
