Torso version 1.33

Making these torsos foam filled is a big process. I have been working on exactly how to do it, and i think i have come up with a way that should work out just fine. The first problem was that i needed to get the latex skin back on the torso, and the arms will not allow for this. So the arms had to be cut off. I put some lines on the should joint to make sure i could line it up again, and dremmeled them off. Next i cut 4 pieces of thick plywood the size of the holes left in the torso and inside the arm holes, and mounted them in with epoxy sculpt. Then i found a square board and cut it to lenth and put it through the piece in the arm and epoxied it all together. Then i lined it up with the torso and cut a hole for it to "latch" into. Now the arms where removable and easly re-attached. The next problem was that i have been working out alot since i took this torso mould and there were some deformations in the lifecast, so i had to do some more repair with epoxy sculpt. I think i need to even add a little more to be sure, but im going to try one and see how it works. Im going to flip the torso upside down and spot foam it as i roll it around. So the last problem was that i needed the neck to be tighter so the foam wouldent run out of the neckhole when its upside down, so i built that out with more epoxy and smoothed it up. I am going to test this out today if possible, i will have pictures up soon.

Well the first foam filling was a success! Its tricky as hell but its possible. The first one i foamed got some minor distortions in it from sitting around to long before i foamed it so i will post a thread and sell it as damaged. As soon as i get more foam in i will foam another and hopefuly paint it. I have new quill moulds on the way for this project. Switched to using solid black latex quills that should be WAY more durrable.

amazing skills you have, one question, where and why did you used clear coat? im reading every thread looking for DIY's and tutorials, but i still have a lot of questions, btw the skin loooks awesome, canyou post some pics of tools and materials you used to make this?, thank you in advance B)

Corey, this was an amazing thread, i am in awe. from one artist to another, this is inspiring. I will figure out what i am insprired to do after i change my underoos, cause this just made me **** myself! i cant wait to get my mask and bio I ordered from you. this is next on my list!

Hey sorry i missed your question, crystal clear is used to seal the clay before moulding. If just makes it easier to peel the clay out once your done. I dont have any pics of my tools at the moment but its a basic sculpting tool set, my favorite tool is just a squared off piece of wire attached to a handle, realy nice for smoothing. I am FINALY about to start a paintup on one of these, so i will have more pics soon. Thank you everyone for your comments!

I just sat here this morning over two cups of coffee and read all 16 pages. I have a question. Is this just going to be put on like a shirt, pulling it over your head or is it going to be split somwhere to allow a zipper of some sort? I ask that as most skins that I have seen are split up the middle of the back. With the backpack molded in that would be impossible on this. Where would someone needing more room be able to make it wider?

Oh, since I was not here when this thread was progessing, I'll add the common "this sculpt is badass!" response and "it looks freakin awesome, great job" comments to the rest of them!

Lol well most people wont be able to just pull it on, it will require a zipper to be installed and a slit in the latex. Where you want to put the slit is up to you, if you want to hide it under the backpack, you can slit down from the shoulder through the left side of the back so it will be under the backpack once its installed. Or, You can slit it from the bottom up along the side so you can slip it on like a shirt, but the ziper would be more visable, but the advantage is the preds with larger waists get to let out a few inches.. I havent decided yet how i want to do mine, but its an interesting question to persue.

I have to say, this turned out nice, but I think, for a little bit of extra $$$ you could have done it in foam latex, and the movement would be really nice. Making an ultracal mold that big is ballsy. I hope you had some people to help you lift it. HEAVY. I remember seeing some pics of some old full torso ultracal molds done at Optic Nerve, and knowing what those must have weighed I am impressed. For me, fiberglass all the way baby. What are you going to paint this with?

Hey effects guy, you still working out there in cali? If you were working in the industry about 5 years ago we probably met lol. Yea i preffer foam latex all the way but its significanly more expensive and i would need a MASSIVE oven to cook it. I would have to make an oven and an injector gun and i would be all set but this method is cheeper and tougher for "halloween" type use. I use PAX all the way, i realy like it best though i havent tryed the inks.
