This may be one of the most awesome things I have ever seen. I showed my buddy who is the biggest Iron Man around and he went crazy for it. All of you talented members never cease to amaze me.

Re: TMP Iron Man Costume. NEW 2009 armor update 10 sept.2009 page 114

Got my suit ready in time for Dragon Con 2009. I picked up Hopkinator's suit off him he got back in the spring and he hadn't done anything with it except inspect the pieces as they were shipped to him. Never even tried the whole thing on, he said. I only had a few weeks to spare before D*C so I had to cut the hands out, figure out eye lights, adjust sizing to myself, order a chest light (guy sells them on Ebay all the time), all that good stuff.

I did widen the eye holes like others here have done and put clear acrylic behind it and figured out eye lights (youtube). It took me like 6 hours because I never do anything with soldering or wiring or such, but I really wanted lighted eyes. I didn't figure out hand lights yet, so I took scrap plastic and covered it in chrome Cylon tape, and hotglued that inside the holes for the hand lights so at least something was there. That's a future project. I attached the fingers to gardening gloves for now (thank you, Decaturvader).

I also cut out the black areas of the cheeks and installed speaker grill for ventillation like others here have done.

The neck is still just a front and back. I haven't cut it out and riveted it to material like others have done. That's another future project.

I really didn't want to use the black Stormtrooper leotard like most everyone I've seen do for Iron Man suits. I wanted something closer to the movie look. So I had my mother-in-law sew tubes of a burgandy/wine colored headliner material from JoAnn Fabrics with the little black lines, then she ran over the sew lines with black Sharpie marker to bring out more definition. She attached these tubes to the bottoms of some old exercise shorts to cover the opening between the thigh and shin armor and made a fake "diaper" of the same material to cover the openings seen in the groin/inner thigh area. She didn't realize those areas were supposed to have lines on them as well, so we'll have to add that later on.

She made another set of tubes that were sewn onto the elbow area of one of those cheesy halloween muscle shirts to cover the elbow opening.

( For those that know me in person, I'm one of those genetic freaks that can't seem to gain weight no matter what. I'm 6 feet tall and weigh 130-135 pounds and use those cheesy halloween muscle shirts under my Predator costume, my Jason Voorhees costume, and now my Iron Man costume. How skinny am I? Well I can slide the TMP shin armor up over my thigh. Costuming is a nice illusion for me. ;) )

To hide the rest of the chest, I put a burgandy T-shirt over the muscle chest shirt to blend in what you see under the arms/side of chest. The real suits had the undersuit being a darker colored material than the armor, and doing what I did matches very well to that look more than using black material of the Stormtrooper undersuits. Someday I'll figure out an even better method using the tubing and such to look more like the real suits. heehee

I used my platform boots off my Jason Voorhees costume and the TMP shoe armor pieces dropped over them nicely without any mods. I just had to figure out how to balance the ankle piece in a good location. I didn't have to trim anything off the leg armor pieces using these boots and walking was no problem at all. :thumbsup Actually movement overall was about what I expected. I knew the joints wouldn't allow awesome mobility, but it moves about like a Stormtrooper armor seems to move (complete with the trooper squeeks), but it is kind of creepy being the only costume I've ever owned where I cannot physically reach my own head to take my helmet off if I had to. :lol

My wife (Cutest Sandgirl here on the RPF) threw together a Pepper Potts costume to walk around with me. I did an hour and a half in the suit Friday night at the Marriott during Dragon Con as my first test run of the suit. People did indeed like it. I'll be wearing it quite a bit more in the future. :cool

Here's some pics from my first time fully suited up. Maybe not the best pics, but ones we had. I'll take better ones sometime to post up:

I tell you what, taking pictures with the flash off makes the suit look way better than with the flash on. With the flash on, you don't see the lights all lit up cool looking! :lol

Awesome convention photographer Bryan Humphrey took some high quality photos he just posted:

Click on pic for high res version. His pictures rock !!!

I absolutely love what you did with the undersuit :love It looks great. I couldn't agree more about not using the black undersuit and the added tubes on the knees and elbows looks amazing. Great job!

The arc reactor looks preety sweet too ... you wouldn't still have the seller's contact info?

People loved the suit !!!! :)

I'm super skinny. 6 feet tall and 130 pounds or so. Yes, the suit fit fine the way I wore it, even for skinny guys. That's another reason I made the undersuit around the joints the way I did using that lighly foamed headliner material, it fills my arms out in between the bicep and forearm armor a lot more than my real twigs of arms do. ;)

The boots were some goth platform boots that look like combat boots I wear with my Jason costume. About 3-4" more height. I kept the dirt on them from my Jason suit, because I figured the armor is painted like it's weathered, so he wouldn't have clean feet, either. :lol

The eyes were done mostly using this video I found online:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hgjmi4uUF6M

Only thing is, he made his for a static display so his entire eye hole lit up and I needed to see from mine, so I modified it. I made little boxes from black Foamies and lined the inside with tinfoil to reflect light. The front was from his video, sections of plastic from a Kroger's Sherbert one quart container. I cut the outside edge at an angle like the movie helmet lights did. The inner section of the box had a LED light stuck through the Foamies to light it.

Like I mentioned, I didn't have much electric wiring experience and it did take me 6 hours to build, test fit, back and forth, so I found a kid's flashlight shaped like a car at the dollar store. It had two LEDs for headlights, so I cut some of the car apart and wired the lights longer to get to the inside of nose of the helmet. It runs off 3 AAA batteries and they are set up like a triangle instead of in a straight line, so I kept the main body of the car inside the mouth of the helmet to hold the battery pack together and my nose rests against it. I'll probably change it to a better system once I have a friend skilled in wiring to help me.

Just like the movie helmets, I look out underneath the lights. The light boxes are taped above the eye holes and hang down behind the clear acrylic I cut and hotglued over the eye holes in the helmet. Vision is perfectly fine in most light sources, except dimly lit areas. If in a area where it's pretty dark, the light bounces around inside the helmet and it blurs my vision. But most convention areas aren't dimly lit, so I shouldn't have many problems.

I did get some fogging of my lenses here and there, but they went away. My wife had one of those little hand-held battery powered fans she'd blow air through my cheek openings and under the chin and that cooled the sweat away once in a while.

Like I mentioned earlier about how much better the suit looks when photographed without a flash, if taken with a flash you can see my real eyes, which I found in this picture online:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmeimon/3904939276/sizes/l/

I'll take pics of stuff soon enough so you can check out my mods.

Mr. Fett,

:thumbsup

Bravo! Well done. It's definitely inspiring as I too am modifying TMP's Mark III masterpiece. Thanks for sharing all your mods. I will do the same when I complete what I'm working on the next few weeks.

Firemedic i look forward to seeing the suit on you. You got the only Coldcast paited mk3 suit made. It gave it a special color and look as well. I hope it will work for your educational program. ;)

Re: TMP Iron Man Costume. NEW 2009 armor update 10 sept.2009 page 114

I cant wait either TMP. Just making a few adjustments so I can wear it and use it to educate, namely making the visor lift up and close so I can talk to the kids, etc. The rest will be mods to put it on and wear it. I should have something to post soon.

Your work truly is a art. Amazing work with the next generation. Keep up the great work.

:cheers

I enjoy reading about all the mods, it would be good to have these on a master list at some point.

HAHAHAHAHA.

Kudo's. I'd say the first pass came off okay. It's too bad that he didn't get one of the straight on images as the lights in the hands were 1.) a PITA and a lot of work. 2.) Make the suit look So Damn Cool!

I owe you guys a couple better images than this. And TMP, I haven't forgotten your email, just was kinda gone for the last couple of weeks (plus you're busy with the move). I'll email "soon"-ish. ;-)

Ahh, I needed a place to put the control panel for the speaker. Seemed like a good place at the time. Then I realized I can't reach it there with my other arm. Mobility really is limited.

I am not done yet. I need to drill out the eyes a little. Add lights to the eyes. Re-wire the right hand with a thicker gauge wire. Finish wiring the left hand.

There are plenty of things left to do on it.

Re: TMP Iron Man Costume. NEW 2009 armor update 10 sept.2009 page 114

The speaker isn't very big; it's about the size of my palm. And it's got a bit of grippy velcro so it sticks to the undersuit easy enough. I programmed in a few sounds from the movie (walking, blasts, a few of RDJ's lines, + ozzy's IRONMAN :love)

There is limited volume control but w/ such a small speaker it sounds kinda distant and a little muffled... given that it's hidden beneath the chest piece. Actually it kinda sounds loud to me :lol

But there is nothing like walking down the street, rocking out to IRONMAN.
