Andy, still can't believe you got so much light out of just one LED. Might that be why you can see your eyes in flash pictures?
I just made a new ARC with 11 LEDs, I can't imagine Rich's setup with 33! (Unless I misread and he meant a total of 33; 11 in each eye & 11 in the chest)
BTW, how large are the holes in the palms? I came across a board of 12 super bright low-profile LEDs that's 1x1.5" in size. I imagine rigging something up that when the wrist is bent back 2 connectors would touch in the armor, thus closing the circuit & illuminating the hands.

That's a lot of LEDs! The real movie suit used 5 LEDs per eye. Here's what my suit looks like with only one LED per eye and using reflective material (aka aluminum foil) to spread the light across:

Hehe,

Sounds like a lot, but they're small superbright LEDs. This is the effect I was after. In regular light they are not overpowering, but in low light the eyes and chest piece look like pure energy. Movie Screenshot below:

sorry for the blurred pic, but you can see the bright glow like pure energy.

Below is a picture in normal lighting on a sunny day.

Sith, thats 33 LEDs in the miniarc and 11 LED per eye. Each LED is 3mm square. =)

Holy headlights Batman!
Sounds like the same ones I was using. And I thought this was bright.

You're right Sith! They're probably the same LEDs. Now cover it with mimetic polyplastic...uh....opaque translucent substance :) and it diffuses it enough to be very bright with a slight bluish hue around the edges. The cover is entirely up to your preferrence. Some like a thin styrene sheet, others a bluish sunglass lense. The key is to opaque it enough to diffuse the individual LEDS so it looks like a solid light. :thumbsup

DecaturVader,

I'll stick POST-IT notes all over the garage that say "TAKE PICS" otherwise I'll forget. You know how it is when you're working on something. Time flies, you get done and say to yourself "Now why didn't I document this?" Maybe I'll take a quick video showing the best "cut" lines for the helmet so I can send it to you. :)

Take good care!

Richie

This is a thread I'm definitely keeping an eye on.
As I'm not going to lie, TMP was one of my reasons for joining this awesome site.
(I've been a lurking fan girl, haha)

TMP was my reason to join as well. Hello to you all.

Wow DecaturVader, I hope all is well and you're doing much better.

The pictures are great. You may have felt "tight" in the suit, but you certainly cant tell. and the kids cant either!

take care!

Absolutly looking good! I also belive the black on the sides actually slims the vissual look. Its a well know thing used in design of clothing and paintings to make it looks smaller og bigger. If for instance the black was in center and the red on sides it whould look wider. But like said it cant be spotted. You look great and it appears the kids also loved having Ironman on visit.

My latest outing with the suit,

Adi Granov (http://adigranov.cghub.com/images) the designer of the film suit was doing a signing near by to me in Leeds North UK along with a load of other comic book artists and he had been told about me and the suit through a Comic distributer friend of mine. . Adi loved the idea of me turning up to stand by his table while he signed a few sketches.. He loved the suit! He said it was interesting to see it on a guy for real as the one in the film had huge gaps left for CG, he was amazed at how well I managed to move in it and he was honoured to have me there.

I managed to speak with him after the show, He's real nice guy! loads of praise for the suit and he said he was really excited to have me there, He didnt need Iron Man there though, he was completely swamped by fans wanting to meet him.

He was interviewed by our National TV and I stood there by his side through out the whole thing, he pointed references to the TMP suit and spoke about his work on the first film and his two new designs for the second.

I'll be getting a copy of the footage from that in the coming week but until then here's a few pics!

Enjoy!
