Thorssoli's Ironman MkIII Build - Finished Suit Pics Page 26!!

Re: Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

What most home-made Iron Man suits miss is that the gold parts have a brushed metal look:
Iron-Man.jpg

(at least on the CG version)

I wonder if there's an easy way to replicate this look...

Looks a little like apple devices. My macbook air has the same sort of effect. Even though the color is completley different and not shiny

I was aiming for it. That's why you can see sanding lines if you look closely at the black basecoat picture. They're still somewhat visible in the finished piece, but it's not as obvious as I'd like. I think I need to keep looking into just plating the gold parts. Then I can brush them to match.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I must say this build is fantastic, as are others.
Keep it up, look forward to seeing the finished product :)

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Yeah I've been thinking about that, you trying to get that look... It's just so damn hard to do without using actual brushed metal :(

I've got a stack of parts all shined up and ready for molding:

Today the mold started for the inner forearm piece, but I didn't take any pictures. (I know. I'm terrible...)

On the subject of terrible, the girlfriend has tricked out the inside of her helmet:

More to come soon. Stay tuned...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

thorssoli, I noticed in your pics that you use the same, or at least very similar, blue painters tape that I have used for my builds. I have had trouble with the tape removing the paint that it has been placed on to cover, did you have any issues with this? Of course I have been using foam for my build, so it's possible that that is part of the problem and secondly I think it could have something to do with how I paint my pieces, I'd just be interested to know if you've had any issues, and if not how you have managed it.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Shawn, I can see you've mocked up the connection of the three part shoulders there on one side, can you show us how those are connected as I thought they'd need tabs so that each piece would have a bolt shot through? really interesting to see.

Great work and thanks for the updates as always. :thumbsup

You need to make sure that your paint has a stronger bond with the piece than the tape does with the paint. The fact that yours is a foam build might be the main problem. There are other versions of painters tape that are designed to be applied over freshly painted surfaces that don't stick quite as strong. In the states they're plurple. I'm sure there's got to be something similar available in your local hardware store.

Actually, I haven't gotten to that yet. In the picture I posted they're just clamped together. The way the files were designed, they just have arcs cut into the ends that mate up to the shoulder lugs. I'm probably just going to add tabs like you mentioned so I can stick them to the back of the lug.

pfffff too much talent ><

Sorry about that (not really).

UPDATE:

The other day I had the new girl cut out some acrylic lenses and heat them up to bend to shape:

Then I had her Dremel out some notches:

And glue in some LEDs:

Lots of them:

Lots of lots of them:

Then I taught her how to solder the connections and wire them up in parallel:

The end result:

Not too shabby.

Next I'll be painting the inside of the lenses with a few coats of thick black paint in order to prevent it from illuminating the inside of the helmet and blinding the wearer. I'll probably lay up some tape over that just to be sure.

Anyhow, while she was working on that, I focused on a few other parts. Here's the print coat on the first half of the upper arm mold:

Here's it is with a bit more silicone laid up:

Here's the elbow and the first piece of the forearm under the rubber:

Here's the abdomen plate ready for rubber:

Looking through my photo albums, I neglected to get a pic with the rubber laid up. But I did get this action-packed photo of one of the guys in mid-pour:

All of those bits will be getting mothermolds soon.

I've also made a lot of progress on the chest:

Which was a minor challenge amidst the distractions:

After much consideration, I've decided to make the pectoral sections permanently attached to the rest of the chest armor. I still need to leave the collar section separate in order to be able to fit my head through, but this way I can reduce the number of molds I'll have to find room for:

I've also finally finished the waist section. Here it is hanging up while I wait for the first coat of standard prototype color to dry:

I've also made a bit of progress on the calves:

Now I just need to finish the thighs, neck, boots, and hip/butt plates...

...almost there.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I like how you showed what you did with the eyes, it turned out nicely too

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

have a feeling we going to be seeing an Pink Suit... ;)

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Pink suit? Probably not. I paint all of my prototypes lightish red when I need a shiny surface, but that's all. It's a tradition that goes back to my HALO project.

Progress continues. Today I did some more bodywork on the chest:

I'm doing the collar piece separate, so the challenge is making sure it'll fit when I put it together:

I think it looks about right.

I also made a lot of progress on the calves. At least that's what I thought before I sprayed on a coat of primer:

If nothing else the primer gives me a better idea of where I need to spend more attention. In the meantime, I had to do another test-fitting with the boot:

I also did a bit more work on the thighs:

They're coming along, but there's a ways to go:

Today I remembered to snap a picture of the belly mold in progress:

Tomorrow it will get a mothermold and I'll probably even have time to make the first pull.

The upper arm mold is coming along too. Here's the print coat on the second half:

Tomorrow I'll get started on the other mold for the forearm and some more of the molds for some of the smaller printed parts.

It's possible I'm going to need to clear off more bench space:

Especially if I start getting serious about this other big project:

More on that in some other thread...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

haha This is why your threads are awesome. "Iron Man, Iron Man, Iron Man, SUDDENLY: A RAPTOR".

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Wowowow! It's definitely never boring reading your updates, always creating new stuff.
Can't wait to see that dino project.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Good to know that you can use the letter Y again. I love your updates.

Quick question about your molds, how come you aren't using large registration keys in these pieces? If I remember right you used to make registration keys in an ice cube tray to keep the silicone layer properly aligned with the mothermolds.

Your velociraptor is looking good. I remember hiding behind the couch when those guys showed up in the original Jurassic Park movie. Not sure why my parents let 5 year old me watch that movie...

Looks like registration keys to me...

I still do that where needed, but with the pieces I've molded so far it's not really necessary. The belly mold is a fairly shallow shape and I won't really be rolling it around when I make pulls, so the pegs around the perimeter will be enough to keep it from getting misaligned. The arm parts are fairly small and the rubber is laid up pretty thick, so as long as I make the rubber smooth, it shouldn't have any problem conforming to the inside of the mothermold and staying put during rotocasting.

When I get to the leg and chest molds, you'll be seeing the registration keys again.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Progress continues. The thighs are coming along:

I still have a bit of filling and sanding to do, but for now I'm trying to saturate the MDF with more primer. Here's a closeup:

In other news, I've decided to change tacks slightly with my approach to the torso. Looking over it, I figure there's no way I can make my shoulders narrow enough to fit through the bottom of the ribcage on the suit. So I split the chest and back. Making them separate will make them easier to mold and cast as well as making it easier to get in and out of the suit.

Here's the back in standard prototype color and almost ready to mold:

Since the chest will clip into place on top of the back plate, I can now make the collar piece permanently attached. So there's a bit more work to do in that neighborhood:

Here's a shot showing some of the symmetry issues I'm trying to resolve:

Now back to work...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Huge thanks for continueing to show your progress Shawn. You're steaming your way through this but the quality of work never drops.
I've got a chest and back that is pretty much like yours as its milled and is one piece but I'm also separating it as its just easier to get into and I seriously won't even try it as one piece . I think it'll also fit over lower torso better too as I found the chest and back combined wont quite slide over it without separation to that's something to bare in mind.

Great work ! Love your updates
