Thorssoli's Ironman MkIII Build - Finished Suit Pics Page 26!!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Pink suit? Probably not. I paint all of my prototypes lightish red when I need a shiny surface, but that's all. It's a tradition that goes back to my HALO project.

Lightish red! LMAO! DONUT!

you work is amazing though!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I called it quits early today, but I did manage to get a bit done on the back. The shiny lightish red coat revealed a few flaws. I fixed most of them. It's almost there:

I did most of todays work on the chest. I also gave it a premature gloss coat to see where things stood:

While waiting for paints and fillers to dry, I did a bit more assembly on my helmet:

Since I'm not terribly happy with the way the paintjob shaped up, I just glued all of the separate pieces together. Closing up the backdoor permanently means I can't quite squeeze my head into it anymore. I'll be building the next one so the face and jaw movement works. For now, I just wanted something on hand that looked done. That it does:

I needed that.

Also, today I had Jarvis print out the armpit details:

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I do believe that you now possess the world's coolest Iron Man nightlight. Looks great.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Thanks. It looks good in full sunlight too:

And better still when I have a model to wear it:

Yesterday I made a lot of progress on the thighs:

Of course, the gloss coat points out a lot of the flaws I didn't see in primer (not that you can tell from these rushed cellphone pics):

The spine protector parts are almost ready to mold too:

Now I just need to focus on the ankles for a bit and all of the leg parts should be done in no time. For now I'm grinding out the recess so the air brakes will fit better:

Stay tuned. I've got a lot of progress to make this week.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I am curious as to why you used the glossy black as the base coat for the pure gold? Is this a standard practice for lighter shade metallic paints?

I also found that alcad2 also has a gold titanium shade as well! Think it'll be worth a trip to see it

Thanks,

Phillip

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Very nice work. I really enjoy following your progress :) keep it up :popcorn

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I'm happy with the color, but the sheen isn't quite right. I used a semi-gloss clearcoat over the gold and it just doesn't pop like I'd like.

Progress continues, but at this stage it's hard to notice in the pictures. For example, the chest is much smoother now:

The thighs are ready for molding:

The knees too:

The spine parts need a bit more touchup:

Most of yesterday's progress was on the ankle parts though:

Today I'm making molds one way or another, so I should have some interesting pictures for you guys within the next 24 hours.

Stay tuned...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Awesome thread, and awesome build!
And any thread with a sudden appearance of a raptor must be good! ;)
Keep up the good work!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

So I've modified the inner shoulder parts with tabs. Here's the rough version:

And here it is trimmed and smoothed:

I set up the forearm for molding:

Same goes for the knees:

I poured the print coat for both of those molds, but there's a lot more rubber to pour:

I've finished the ab plate mold:

Much more to do in the next day or two. Stay tuned...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Love how you show your moulding process. Those tabs on the shoulder shells look to be just the ticket.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

looking good man... keep up the good work

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Sorry for the lack of updates. Things have gotten pretty hectic here and I haven't been getting online as often as I normally might. This build should be picking up over the next couple of weeks. Progress has been continuing despite my lack of updates though. First of all, I finished the abdomen plate mold. Here's the first pull being laid up:

Here's the first pull out of the mold:

The mold for the knees is done:

Here's a shot of the rubber laid up on the outer forearm piece:

You can see the nearly completed mold in the background of this shot:

In the shot above, you can see the bicep mold in the foreground. Here it is before I added the mothermold:

The mothermolds are made of regular urethane casting resin with fiberglass mat laid in for reinforcement. This results in a very lightweight, thin, strong mothermold without all of the toxic fumes from polyester resin. This probably wouldn't be cost effective if it weren't for the fact that I buy casting resin in bulk.

So that's that. Next I'll be making more molds and peeling the prototypes out of the molds I've already done:

Then it's time to pour some castings.

Stay tuned...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

You say you've been loaded up time wise but you've made some great progress here Shawn! love seeing the moulds. It really helps to see what's needed here on this kind of scale. Great work and love the updates. :thumbsup

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I have been pretty busy, but I'm about to pour a lot more time and resources into this build. Things are about to get much more interesting.
