Thorssoli's Ironman MkIII Build - Finished Suit Pics Page 26!!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Man, if only I had a printer for my helmet! It would've been a long time ago! But this is phenomenal work!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I'm a little worried that the updates are all starting to look the same. Case in point...

Here's the knee and elbow parts carved out:

Here's the elbow assembled and primed:

As with all of the parts, the MDF will soak up a lot of primer in between rounds of sanding and smoothing.

I did a bit more sanding and smoothing on the upper chest and spine parts, but there's no apparent change that'll show up in pictures.

That's about all I got done today while I was focused on a couple of paying projects. I've made it a point to put all of the parts on one of the workbenches so I'll feel appropriately guilty when I'm not working on it:

Hopefully this project will become much more interesting in the next few days...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

god i'm jealous! i haven't half the resources or facilities to do anything like this!!! damn Ireland and your terrible cost of living!!!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Don't be jealous. Work hard at your craft like Thorsolli and the rewards will come in time as well.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

WOrking on something without the basic tools is kinda impossible, i'll keep to pepping for now but damn i want some proper equipment =/

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

now i really wish i had access to a 3d printer T_T

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

UH-MAZING dude. Absolutely LOVE this and your ability to create! Can't wait to have a creative space here in NYC! Right now, the living room has to do. Wife loves that... ;)

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Hi all, apologies for the lack of updates. I met a girl and things have slowed down a bit.

Then she mentioned that she's interested in the stuff I do. Turns out she wasn't just aiming to impress me:

I showed her how to rotocast, then set her up with the Dremel and she zoned in and trimmed out all the edges on her own casting:

While she was doing that, I managed to do more bodywork on some of the other pieces. The bicep is almost ready to mold:

The pelvis is all but done:

I also did all of the prep work on the shoulder bits:

They're almost ready to mold:

The small chest parts are coming along as well:

Here's an earlier shot of them in place on the main chest piece:

The chest still has a bit of work left to do. I need to fair in the bits under the arms:

The waist is almost done, just a few flaws to fix on the back:

The front piece is prepped and shiny, so I can mold it now:

Then I need to get back to work on the leg bits:

The Bondo is on there to fill in some serious flaws that Lopez decided I needed to deal with. That machine vexes me sometimes.

I'm short on time, but I still plan to have a suit to wear to the premier. Provided I don't succumb to distraction:

Stay tuned.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Shaun,
That's some pretty nice distraction right there .. seems like she got you back on track too! All the better! ;)

Very nice work! And the parts looks pretty good too! :thumbsup

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

My words exactly! Great to have a nice lady on board that shares in your same interests and has some great skills to boot!

And as always great to see more picture updates :cool

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Awesome! How did you come across your CNC machine? My friend has a 3d printer and we are looking for good files for the hands--did you make yours or did you find them?

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

You could have so much fun with that machine!

I'm not sure I like you talking about my new girl like that...

Kidding. I assume you're talking about the 3D printer.

Right?

I bought the CNC machine. Get yours here: http://www.carvewright.com

I cannot/will not share the files. Sorry. I wish people would stop asking about them.

Today was a big day for bodywork. The chest is nearing completion:

I also made a lot of progress on the right shin and got Lopez to work on the right shin. Things are really starting to come along now.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Alright. Real progress pics for a change.

The biggest progress was on the right shin. Lopez was having issues when he was carving the parts, so there was a lot of bodywork to do. It's coming along:

While I was doing that, Lopez carved out the last pieces of the left shin:

Once I'd assembled the slices, it was pretty clear that the left shin came out much better than the right one started out:

While I was making dust, I also made a bit of progress on the chest:

It's getting there:

I've finished the elbow prototype:

Then, because I need to see something look a bit more finished to keep me motivated, I did some work on a pair of helmets. Here's a faceplate with a gloss black basecoat:

Here's a pair of them with a coat of Alclad II "pure gold":

And a closeup:

At this stage, I wasn't too happy with the finish. It turns out that the clearcoat makes a big difference:

The red is Rustoleum "colonial red" which isn't too far off from the screen-used red. When I do the rest of the suit, I'm planning on shooting it with a 2-stage automotive paint and an HVLP gun. For now I just needed something to look like I'm getting somewhere.

Both of them still need the black parts picked out, but here's one taped together:

It was a good day in the workshop. Here's how I left it:

Progress will continue tomorrow...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

You're like a machine Shawn! So much great progress. Such a great thread to keep watching. Top notch work !!!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

What most home-made Iron Man suits miss is that the gold parts have a brushed metal look:

(at least on the CG version)

I wonder if there's an easy way to replicate this look...
