Thorssoli's First Order Builds - Captain Phasma FINISHED on Page 21!

Re: Thorssoli's Episode VII Builds

That first one has almost a mirror finish and the third isn't very shiny compared to the others. I think the middle is the winner

Re: Thorssoli's Episode VII Builds

Absolutely great work. as you said, my choice would be the middle one too. it look pretty movie accurate!

Re: Thorssoli's Episode VII Builds

So the Spazstix Mirror Chrome won't require a clear coat? Is it strong enough to withstand wear? Great work and I am very excited to see the end results.

Re: Thorssoli's Episode VII Builds

Oh man this whole thread is full of such amazing work. The Phasma helmet is calling to me. I'm curious what clearcoat you'll use on those finished that require it?

Re: Thorssoli's Episode VII Builds

I've often wondered how theses things are created from start to finish. This is the best thread ever :)

Re: Thorssoli's Episode VII Builds

thorssoli; As on FB, I agree with the middle. The trailers show her more dulled out due to weathering, and not an ultra deathstar shine.

Re: Thorssoli's Episode VII Builds

Started carving the chest. Nothing much to see yet:

I need to replace the cutting motor on my carving machine. Hopefully I'll have a better update soon.

Re: Thorssoli's Episode VII Builds

Alright, so after a bit of troubleshooting I got Lopez Dos-Point-Oh (my second Carvewright machine) to churn out the last few slices of the chest armor:

After removing all of the waste, I started sticking the pieces together:

So here's the assembled chestplate:

After cutting off the nubs of the support tabs and a light sanding, it looks like so:

Then I applied a liberal coating of primer to the whole thing:

It still needs a bit of sanding and filler work, but that'll get done pretty quickly.

Meanwhile, Lopez Dos-Point-Oh has already carved the shoulders:

Next I'll get him started on the inner chest/back piece, followed by the waist section.

In other news, my friend Ian (who also owns a Carvewright) has offered to add his machine to the project. So far he's carved out the forearms and biceps. I've been asking for pics, but this little teaser is the best I've got so far:

As a side note, since the chest, shoulders, and forearms are the same shape, I suppose I should get to work on a TIE pilot helmet...

This is amazing work. How much time do you spend in your workshop on average per week?

All of it. I work there. The problem is that my work looks an awful lot like my hobbies, so it's hard to tell when I've stopped working and started screwing around. You can see a few of my recent projects on my company Facebook page: Thorsson & Associates Workshop.

Oh, and Wired.com came out and filmed this little bit and completely left out all of my professional builds:

So yeah, I spend a lot of time in my shop.

Yesterday I put together the shoulder prototypes. Here's the finished carved parts:
22611185770_03692193bd_c.jpg

And one complete shoulder worth of pieces snapped off of the sheet:
22611185770_03692193bd_c.jpg

Then assembled:
22380798567_d941e175ff_c.jpg

And another one:
22810362281_d25546c576_c.jpg

Here they are in primer:
22380798347_a55209b02f_c.jpg

My baggy sweatshirt makes them look a bit undersized, but I think they're about right:
22611185370_7ddc21bc56_c.jpg

Meanwhile, as I've mentioned before, my friend Ian also has a Carvewright and he's been churning out parts on it. His machine is less abused than mine:
22380798927_d28cedf2b3_c.jpg

Since he's got a bunch of poplar left over from his Stargate project (read about that HERE) so he's been using to carve out parts. Here's the cut pieces for the forearms:
22810362531_87b9348d57_c.jpg

And the upper arms:

And here they are assembled and sitting on his (much cleaner) workbench:
22176425864_ab7292e4b2_c.jpg

So progress continues. I've had to cannibalize parts off of Lopez in order to get Lopez Dos-Point-Oh running reliably. Hopefully the replacement parts will arrive soon and I'll have both machines running simultaneously. Then we'll really kick this project into high gear.

Stay tuned...

Re: Thorssoli's Episode VII Builds

But... but... if those are your nonprofessional builds - man, your work really is incredible!!

Re: Thorssoli's Episode VII Builds

Wow, you are really inspirational. Basically you make your living from selling copies of what you make, I take it?

Re: Thorssoli's Episode VII Builds

Not really.

Most of my income comes from commissioned builds. These range from giant art installations like this big outlet I made earlier this year:

(story here: LINK)

To smaller things like the revolving, glowing trophy I made for the EVOLVE Proving Grounds tournament that 2K Games held a couple months back:

(story here: LINK)

In between these bigger projects, I also occasionally crank out batches of my Combat Garden Gnomes and sell them on Etsy. Here's just three of the thirteen variants I've made so far:

There's also the occasional film project that'll come up. I usually end up making small things for big movies or big things for really small movies. Most of those I don't get to talk about though, so it's my replica projects that get the most attention. Eventually a few more things will be released, non-disclosure agreements will expire, and I'll get to show off some more really cool things.

When I make replica stuff, it's usually hobby builds that involve most of the same tools and materials that I'm using professionally. Here and there I'll sell a few copies of some pieces or parts in order to help offset the costs of making stuff. The materials tend to get a bit pricey.
