The Winter Soldier - Costume Research Thread

Hi!
so im planning on making a winter soldier cosplay for my city's comic con and im slowly collecting all of the separate pieces, but i need ideas for how to build the arm. ive seen a lot of ideas on here that are helpful but i was wondering if someone could guide me through a step by step process because for the most part i have no idea what any of you are saying. please keep in mind that this is my first cosplay and i have a fairly low budget since im still in highschool and am using my own money. i mostly need to know the items i need to collect to be able to build and mold the arm and stuff. thanks.

what about this method: buy a cotton long sleeve shirt. glue/tape foam padding to it (the kind they sell at stores for making seat cushions, cheap alternative being hard styrofoam) to build fake muscle definition. then put another, stretchy sleeve over all that...preferably grey, silver, or black colored. then glue strips of craft foam (or worbla i guess) on this top shirt layer, to act as the individual pieces of metal. then paint everything silver. this is the way i plan to make the arm in the future, because the urethane one i currently have is uncomfortable and a bit rigid.

does anyone know where i could find the belt/holster he has????

as far i know it doesn't exist premade (except as "whole" costumes). people do make them for the market but for some reason refuse to sell them separately, they will only sell the belt as a "set" with the H-harness.

to be movie-accurate, the belt and holster have to be pretty much built from scratch, like most everything else about this character.

super last-minute, but i rush-built the domino goggles tonight. so, now im ready for TBCC2014 lol.

I have no idea but the holster, but I think I'll construct the belt out of Cordura and add this buckle: http://cosplaysky.com/captain-america-the-winter-soldier-bucky-barnes-metal-belt-buckle.html

I might replace the holster-thing with a large pouch anyways, because I can't do guns or knives due to insane police here. To be frank, I sort of understand where they're coming from, but seriously, I am a ddue walking around as a dude from the movies. I have better things to do than to kill people while in the least conspicuous costume ever. "Oh, that dead guy? See that guy who looks like a walking armoury? It was him."

As for your money issues: I've decided that building the arm on my budget with my skill at stuff was completely unfeasible. It would look silly. So I'm skipping it, wearing the long jacket on top of the vest.

I've been slowing working on a Winter Soldier cosplay for a con at the end of this month and coming across this thread had been so helpful! I'm impressed by the level of accuracy some of you are going for haha I can't aim for that much, especially when it comes to the weapons, but it gives me a goal to work on in the long term perhaps. I feel like that cosplay is going to last me much more than one con so I can continuously improve it.

So far I've mostly worked on the mask and arm and I'm about to start making the jacket later this week. I'll probably try to upload some progress pics as I finish some parts, especially of the jacket since it seems that some people are having trouble figuring it out

Since this is your first cosplay and you are on a budget my recommendation for the arm would be to go to a fabric store and buy some performance knit sliver fabric. You shouldn't need more than half a yard (if it is 60" or 54" wide fabric)(around $10 at worst). Then get a giant roll of black craft foam ($10). Have someone trace your arm, shoulder, and partially across your chest on to the fabric. Across the chest and under your other arm help to keep the sleeve up and in place. Be liberal with the size across your chest so you can breath. It is much easier to take it in than add to it. Sew it together. You can cut the foam out in to the shapes for the arm and place them either as three larger pieces that have the design of many pieces drawn on them or as many small pieces. Get some chrome paint (I use spray paint $3-8). Black, red, and chrome (match your other paint) acrylic paints for details and the star. An epxoy, I use E-6000. For the hand you can paint the fabric with either the acrylic mixed with a fabric medium (recommended) or a special fabric paint. Practice and test your paints on scrap fabric. I'd paint the foam and then glue it on. Foam can be shaped with a heat gun so it curves better with the arm. There are several ways to cast an arm. It is best since this will go past your shoulder to to have a friend help you. Just do some googling and look at the options. I alginate and plaster when mine was cast.
This method can look very good if done right you just need to put the work into it.

So I figured out what is up with the two pistols and knife sheath holster. He has the two guns only when he is attacking Fury. The rest of the movie he has the sheath/knife where the guns were. So the guns are accurate if you are doing the Fury attack outfit and the Gerber with the Tanto sheath is what he is wearing in the bridge fight and helicarrier scenes.

I found this tutorial recently: http://lousysharkbutt.tumblr.com/post/93510399892, that shows the process on making the arm with mostly just craft foam and paint (click on each picture to have more instruction of each step). It seems to the be the cheapest way to make it that I have found so far, other than the just drawing on fabric way.

look at these gorgeous pictures of the actual mask and goggles from the movie company website that produced them:

Woah that's really interesting to see! I had somehow figured out how the mask was held in the movie, but it's great to see it in such detail now. I'm currently working on the mask myself, but I don't think I would make it hold that way for practical reason (mostly it would get in the way of the wig), but it's always neat to see how they do it.

Speaking of which, for those who have made the mask, how does yours hold on your face? I'm currently thinking of a few ways I could do it, but I'm curious to see what people have come up with.

my first and current mask holds on via plastic buckle type deal, as well as a small velcro strap just to compress the jaw line a bit. i ended up having to add little loops for my ears (the red yarn) because otherwise the mask would slide down my face. so now it fits on like glasses would.

this was my first draft and i've worn it to one event and it held up well but it was impractical (couldn't eat or drink, ears hurt) i definitely plan to remake now that i have better idea of what i'm doing.

Oh I see! I've seen some people use some sort of harness that they put under their wig that the mask attach to it, but my concern with that method is that the straps might show when the mask is not being worn. I was thinking of just using elastic that I could loop around my ears since I want to be able to take off the mask easily to talk to my friends, eat, etc at the con. Although, that's probably gonna hurt my ears by the end of the day haha

Anybody still need the M4 with M203 Grenade launcher? Decided to take a different approach to mine, so trying to let it go.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1407428664.347184.jpg
