The Winter Soldier - Costume Research Thread

i made my own mask since the online ones are not ventilated enough....and i can easily imagine they would be as hot as they say, because even making a homemade one with real mesh and holes everywhere, it still gets very hot and sweaty with it in. ridiculous! i will try again in the future, because i made a ton of mistakes this first roung.

some progress photos:

materials: plastic mesh, fabric mesh, duct tape for the pattern, craft foam sheets, acrylic paint, air dry clay, hot glue.

Hi everyone,

So I have the jacket, the vest shouldn't be much of an issue either. I'm going to leave out all the guns and knives, because there are legal issues and a rather antsy police. Maybe I'll have a gun, I don't know yet.

Either way, I've been looking at pants and this thread hasn't really had any pants-talk. So I googled and one of the first results was that these pants are the ones that Bucky wears (HiRes imagery, yay!). Source: Found here

Can we confirm that this is Bucky's legwear?

Also, is there still someone out there who makes the mask for a reasonable price?

They're not. I'm 99.9% sure the pants were custom made.

Blargh. But I really should have known. From the looks of it, the kneepads are directly attached to the trousers. How is this practical in any way? So I'm now facing the question whether or not I should sacrifice a pair of pants I buy new to have some sort of metal clasp holding strap contraption sewn onto it. I'm grateful for any ideas you guys might have to make this less of a problem than I think it is, because this will be my first costume ever that I'm trying to do screen accurate.

A lot of tac pants have attached knee padding. His pads are based on tactical knee pads which have a similar two strap system

The knee pads are actually separate from the pants. I ordered the pants you posted. I am a woman so it maybe different for guys but those things went all the way up to my ribcage. I ended up sending them back and ordering the women's style. I will let you all know how they work. There are Airsoft and Paintball websites that have the knee pads attached if you still want to go that route.

I actually am a guy and I've had 5.11s before, I should be fine. :) Thanks for the heads-up, though. So how do the 5.11s look in terms of screen accuracy? And what did you do for the knee pads?

I am going to be making my knee pads, haven't started yet (moving). My plan is to get some tactical ones from Ranger Joe's or something and cover them to look like the movie ones. His pants have several things that would need to be added for screen accuracy. There is what looks like a leather strip above the knees, the Molle system on the left hip, and a vertical zippered pocket to the right of the molle system. frontfullbody.jpgknees up front.jpgwinter soldier belt.jpgThe pockets are in the right place but not the exact style. These pants were defiantly modified heavily if not full custom made. Which makes the fact that he ripped them all along the crotch even funnier. Though I ripped every pair of Army pants I was ever issued in the crotch.

Wow, thanks for the help. The molle hip thing - thanks for teaching me that word, by the by - I can easily get done by using this belt buckle and some sort of carbine hook thing to attach the strap to the back of the pants or the belt.

I just realize that I don't know what he carries in that extra belt thing. Is it a knife? Because I can maybe do knives. Guns are defintely out of the question because of the legal situation in my country. Well, that and they're not used to people walking around in costume at all. I am actually preparing on being asked to show ID at least once.

he carries 4 knives total. two tanto knives on the back of his belt, and two daggers on his right thigh holster. (Gerber Mark II, Gerber Yari Tanto, Benchmade SOCP 176BK)

Wow! Thanks for that post. I think I might have to go for a pouch, though. Because prop knives are expensive to order or look daft when bought locally. Or some sort of sheath. I might get a similar-looking knife, though. I'll check. But anyways, thanks!

I apologize for the double post, but I have just realized something. My English fails me in various places. I've been trying to google up certain articles needed for the costume and I need the technical terms for them, because my google fu fails me. I seriously just don't understand some of the things, I'm afraid.

  • What is the chest harness strap called?
  • What is Molle?
  • What are the belts called? Army belt produces a lot of results.
  • Are the belts made of Nylon? Cotton?
  • Can I buy just the belt fabric somewhere and attach my own buckle? What's the name of the fabric? Because that would take care of the harness issue as well, I suppose.
  • Obviously, I'll have to buy something at some sort of army surplus store thing. Do you know of any good ones that sell their stuff online?

  • What is the chest harness strap called?
H-harness

  • What is Molle?

(from wikipedia) MOLLE (pronounced "molly") is an acronym for Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment. It is used to define the current generation of load-bearing equipment and rucksacks utilized by a number of NATO armed forces, especially the British Army and the United States Army. The system's modularity is derived from the use of PALS webbing as rows of heavy-duty nylon stitched onto the vest to allow for the attachment of various MOLLE-compatible pouches and accessories. This method of attachment has become a de facto standard for modular tactical gear, replacing the ALICE system used in the earliest modular vest systems (which is still in use with many police forces). It is produced for the United States government under contract by several contractors, such as Specialty Defense, Armor Holdings, Ehmke Manufacturing/High Ground Gear, as well as Eagle Industries.

  • What are the belts called? Army belt produces a lot of results.

To narrow your results, try "tactical utility belt." Keyword is tactical, not army.

  • Are the belts made of Nylon? Cotton?

My guess is military grade cordura and/or nylon.

  • Can I buy just the belt fabric somewhere and attach my own buckle? What's the name of the fabric? Because that would take care of the harness issue as well, I suppose.

I think that would produce a good result, gluing or sewing fabric onto a belt. Here is a link to the fabric I'll personally be working with when i remake my belt and harness http://www.ebay.com/itm/251561624678?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

I think eBay and Amazon tend to be the cheapest and most reliable options.

the Tampa Bay Comic Con is this weekend, so here's what i got as my cosplay. It's missing parts, and screen accuracy was sacrificed in places so I could get something done on time...but hopefully sometime after the con and before halloween I can upgrade it :)

20140731_143625.jpg20140731_143614.jpg20140731_143858.jpg

this is only my second cosplay ever. the first being a one-time-only The Batman's Joker. It will be my first comic convention.

The jacket was a partial custom from DreamLeather (ebay). the glove a full custom from Leatherfloves4u (etsy). the arm is a premade item from GCFX Cosplay (ebay). Harness, skorpion, fingers, and mask are scratch-built by me. also had to paint my own star, and painted the knee pads as well. dyed my real hair black (was blue-green). I will prolly dye the pants because they almost look navy.

Oh wow! I hope my costume will look half as cool as yours!

And thank you so much for the lengthy explanation of things. I'll get right on getting things. There's even a fabric shop in town where I could go look for cordura!

Hi!
so im planning on making a winter soldier cosplay for my city's comic con and im slowly collecting all of the separate pieces, but i need ideas for how to build the arm. ive seen a lot of ideas on here that are helpful but i was wondering if someone could guide me through a step by step process because for the most part i have no idea what any of you are saying. please keep in mind that this is my first cosplay and i have a fairly low budget since im still in highschool and am using my own money. i mostly need to know the items i need to collect to be able to build and mold the arm and stuff. thanks.
