The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

Obviously, if I do this, I will lose access to the original tricorder operating system and all its functionality, possibly including the lights from the 3 buttons and the moire lights and movement. This is the trade-off.

So, this probably doesn't exist, but what if there was a switched splitter for the 24 pin cord? you could leave both active and switch which one uses the screen.

edit: beat to it

Could you just run your operating system in parallel, with the ability to ‘toggle’ between your media system and Wand’s OS?
I briefly looked into a "splitter" ribbon cable attachment that would let me have the wand co. OS and my video player both output to the same display screen, but haven't found anything that will let me do it yet. Its likely that its not possible.

I have found a cable that does the opposite; splitting a single 24pin out-port into 2 for 2 displays, but cant find one that allows 2 inputs to one display.. yet.
(It’s not my forte) it might be a bit clunky, but what would be involved in fabricating your own connection using existing splitter components and other parts?

I asked chatgpt if i could theoretically connect 2 raspberry pi's to a single display screen like the one in the tricorder, and the answer it gave me was... discouraging.

Ive also posted my idea over at the raspberry pi forums, but so far no one has chimed in with anything useful. i think ill be able to narrow my options once i confirm the exact display screen used in the trike. I have posted a question in the comments section of the teardown video asking the fella if its possible to clarify what exact model or serial number is printed on the displays ribbon cable. ive also found a better spot in the vid to grab a screenshot, but still cant find anything about it when i search google:

looks like "WL 24g1032-A1 ?

I’m happy now. Now that I have a Wand Tricorder I’ve been able to complete my exploration set collection. I have the Wand set, Master replica set, the Diamond Select set (all three Tricorder versions). The Playmates set and the Hallmark ornaments set. Although Hallmark only made a type 1 hand phaser.

Now I can get back to working on my Wah Chan concept Tricorder project. A designer on CGTrader has a very comprehensive well designed model for 3D printing that looks really good.
I started the Wah Chang from CGTrader long ago and still remains a WIP. Good Luck with yours!

Im not sure if it would all fit in the lower compartment, but this might be a simpler way to go about it:

here is the back of the display showing the 24-pin ribbon

and here is an 9.5 inch display ribbon extension cable (link) that should get me from the flip-head unit (Activities Unit) down to the lower compartment

And I have been seeing little control boards like this one (link) while Ive been trying to find out more about what components i will need. it looks like it will accept the 24-pin ribbon from the display and just straight-up adapt it to HDMI, but im not sure if this one is actually HDMI out, not in

With HDMI now as the input to the display screen, I could just buy one of these cheap little media players (link)

It has an IR jack to connect an external IR receiver (link), and i think i can give it bluetooth with one of these transmitters plugged into that AV port (link)

Im sorry if over-sharing my thoughts about adding video playback to the trike is annoying anyone, but its nice to be able to throw my ideas and discoveries here. Maybe this isnt the place for it and I should start a new thread?

If theres anyone in the US that still wants a tricorder, there is the option of using a service like forward2me or maybe shipito that will accept the package from AmazonUK and then forward it to a US address. I have never used one personally so i dont know what the process is or how much it costs, but its an option.

Yup… The Wand Co. said the first run is complete. They said they “may” have a second run if Shop Star Trek interest shows the demand is there.
It seems strange that after all the research and work that went into developing the Tricorder. Chris said it’s been in the works for seven years. So they were already working on it before they announced it 5 years ago. He also said that the profit margin was razor thin on this and when they do finally start production they make relatively small run of only about maybe 10,000 units world wide. From the way Chris talks about a second run doesn’t sound likely.
