I never played the Ezio ones but fans always say those are the best in the series in both gameplay and story.I never bothered playing the first game. I enjoyed the ones with Ezio since the story and gameplay was different than anything I'd played up to that point, and then the slide started.
In the first game, it was very wash, rinse, repeat. Get a contract, track the target, isolate and kill him. There's no variety at all. Sometimes it might be a challenge sneaking passed guards but there's no challenge in the actual assassination itself. You usually end up chasing the target for a few blocks, kill him and sometimes fight his bodyguards and that's it. I'd have enjoyed it more if there would've been more options on how to infiltrate the area the target is hiding in and more ways to assassinate than just stabbing. Hitman is a much better assassin game in that regard.
