Follow-up: I picked up Robocop and have enjoyed the first "pre-credits" mission and the parts of the second one that I've done.
It's very much NOT a AAA game. It's good, but it's clearly made on a budget. Faces look great when they're static, but when they speak, you can instantly tell that it's budget work and they didn't really do mocap. Coming off of games like CP2077 2.0 and BG3, it's...uh...well, the difference is pretty stark. BUT, you can tell there's a ton of love in this game.
They nailed the look of the "1997 OF THE FUTURE" that was Robocop (1987). They got Peter Weller to come back and do VO work for this. The sound design is solid.
Gameplay wise, so far it feels...just about right on Normal mode. Robocop doesn't jump. He doesn't even really sprint, but he can move at a faster clip in some instances. Most criminals pop off at you with 9mm handguns, Uzis, and AK-47s, and while sustained fire will damage you, and individual criminal poses no threat. Your Auto-9 is a beast with unlimited magazines, but 50 rounds per mag. If you got the version that came with the OCP Shotgun, it looks the part, hits hard at close range, and is otherwise kind of an afterthought. The usual "aim down sights" thing instead does that CRT overlay where you outline a guy in green. And there's an achievement for killing a dude with a crotch shot a la the first film.
Robocop is a walking tank. He can repair himself with repair kits or -- if you unlock the ability -- by grabbing a circuit panel and zapping yourself healthy again.
There's some RPG elements which, I think, will make people wish for a New Game + mode where you come back with all upgrades and can keep building. I don't get the sense that there are enough points to fully upgrade every aspect.
Anyway, it's solid. If you're a fan of the films, it's very solid. Is it $50+ solid? Well, that's up to you, but I had a steam credit after refunding COD: Vanguard, and this feels like money better spent.
