The Video Game Thread - anything and everything...

I imagine that's more in the context if you were to play today - everyone else playing is ages ahead of you with everything unlocked. You decide to try today and you're toast over and over again. I wouldn't want to walk into a new game and have to get my butt kicked for a couple months before i had the equipment to actually compete with everyone else. However, that said, in that scenario, i'm also not forking out extra cash to get there, so i'd realized the situation and then just pass on that game.

So, i'm OK with the concept as long as it's pay to catch up and not pay to win. Too many games these days are set up exclusively as pay to win which is just a sad state really. I also really wanna know where all these people gets thousands to spend on a freaking game every month. I get what goes on on this site ain't cheap, but it's not really a weekly (or daily) thing like the games and in the end, here, you absolutely have something to show for it :) But games where you have to pay 2k for the new fancy 'castle of the week'...I don't get that.
I don't play multi-player games so it doesn't matter to me. Maybe it's because I by-pass all of the problem games that I don't really care.

Very possible. It's only multi player games where pay to win is a factor. If they're single player - there's no one to outdo. If you'd be willing to pay extra to skip ahead in a single player game, you've got issues :)

This is kind of off topic but I'm looking to sell my Oculus and pick up a Nintendo Switch. Since having a kiddo, sitting down with my xbox is very easy and the VR is just not an option at this point. I like the portability the Switch offers which makes that enticing. How is the Switch when used as a console?
The Switch is quite amazing as a console imo. Sure its not as powerful as the other consoles but you cant beat Nintendo’s first party games for the most part and Switch is also getting a lot of indies added to the console, at least in Japan.

Its also quite good when traveling with a decent battery life. I would have loved this in college since without a tv, I was stuck playing emulators or some portables so getting console-grade games on the go is great. Switch also has access to a wide genre of games that are great fun so its definitely a good purchase imo.

That reminds me. I have the PS4 Spider-man game from 2018 that I haven't taken the time to play, yet have heard good things about.
Not tried it yet, but I guess the PS5 is suppose to play a PS4 disc just fine. Hopefully it will also load things much faster, but still being a disc, not sure how much.
Spiderman PS4 is excellent. Love that game. Combat is basically Arkham with an emphasis on dodging and air combat since there are few enemies that can touch Spidey in the air, especially early game. Amazing story (one of the best, especially compared to modern Spiderman comics). Highly recommend you play it. The only negative I have is that there is no boss rush or easy way to replay boss fights. DLC was also quite good although the enemies become very tanky so its really only if you enjoyed the base game and want more.

I find this statement ironic since microtransactions are “invading” the single player space too with these customers existing. The most recent RE4make allows players to purchase “tickets” that essentially allows them to skip the grind of unlocking the secret weapons which trivialize the game.

Im honestly ok with these microtransactions to be honest. I get that not everyone has time to spend playing games and some people just want to play god (although in that case, another genre is probably better imo). While I disagree with the practice, people can choose to spend on what they want.

If Capcom then decides to lock off the weapons and require you need to grind for 5 million pesos (in-game currency) to buy a gun when one playthrough only nets you 500,000 at best to prolong the grind; thats where I start drawing the line. Excessive grinding of boring stuff is not fun.

I've not seen any myself. Hence the statement. If they push it further, my response will be to pass or ignore the feature.

Before games went multiplayer (and virtually MP only), there was emphasis on story and being long enough to make it worth the purchase. The rise of MP led to the neutering of SP IMO. Those games were getting shorter with much less depth, added as an aspect of a MP title. The last few years that finally started to change We're getting much deeper, longer and engaging SP content again and i'm loving it. It's existed in pockets. So, i hope the needle moves further in that direction still.

However, with that the greedy EA's of the world will almost certainly force micro's into SP content to make up what they perceive they've lost.

Retro styled RTS game D.O.R.F. just went up on Steam Wishlist.

I like the retro ascetic to it, 3 playable factions and nice gritty looking battles. Looks like one I'll probably pick up.

Getting closer to release

Jagged Alliance 3 also really looks like it's coming along in detail

EDIT: Final pre-release trailer

That Mario RPG remake looks absolutely amazing. I haven't owned a main Nintendo console since the N64, but that could be tempting with something like that. Plus these last few Mario and Zelda games look like they've been pretty good.
I just need to STOP time for like a year, maybe more and catch up on SO much.

Leak suggests Metal Gear Master Collection Volume 2 will include:

Metal Gear Solid 4 (the first time this one appears on anything but the PS3)
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
Metal Gear Solid V

Also the Volume 1 Master Collection appears up for Pre-order on all platforms, releasing October 24th.

Today, June 23rd, is Sonic's 32nd Birthday. So I made this silly little short video.

Good times playing Sonic. I had the original trilogy on Genesis but never had a chance to play any of the Dreamcast ones. Then I got Sonic Generations for PS3 which was pretty good. There's been so many Sonic games. Most of them apparently weren't so great. The last one that released -"Frontiers"- seems to have good ratings. Maybe I'll pick it up when it hits the bargain bin.

Sonic has had quite a rocky history.
Adventure 1 and 2 were pretty good on Dreamcast, of course had some issues, being early 3D. I only played the first Adventures game on Dreamcast barrowing it from a friend. Now I have the PS3 versions for both 1 and 2.
Sonic 4 just had horrible controls. Then they made Sonic 4 part 2, which was a little better, but not enough to save it, sadly.
Just played Unleashed a few months ago. It was an odd game. Too many issues for me. But, a lot of people really love it, as it was their first Sonic game.
Frontiers, a step in the right direction for sure. The open world parts were near perfect. The actual levels, controls were still off a bit. Its like two different teams worked on those parts. You can just about beat the whole game and only need to play a few of the levels for some items. The rest you get in the open world area. Kinda strange how they made that work.
I'm excited about the new Super Stars game, as it goes back to 2D. More that 2.5D look.

I wonder if they are going to reopen servers or allow people to connect with PS4 (for MGSV).

Peace Walker had coop and MGSV had mother base invasions that were needed for trophies and to grind for materials to produce stuff (this being the more important task tbh). Would be nice if they added the cut material to MGSV but this is probably just a collection rerelease.
