The Ultimate Guide to Lightsabers eBook

Out of curiosity what the length from the clamp to the end of the can? Mine is about 94mm. The blueprint that Roy worked up say it should be 92mm.

Mine is also 94. Both my replica bottoms and my vintage are. Those grips on mine I 3D printed at 90mm in order to get the 3.5mm gap. Roy's 88mm grips left an enormous gap.

Isn’t this along the same lines as Pablo Hidalgo’s guidebook from a few years back?

Either way, since I’m never giving Lucasfilm/Disney another dime, I’ll stick with Seth’s book, thank you VERY much. At the very least, this new book might provide some reference images for Seth to use in future updates. I have a feeling it’ll just be in-universe stuff, with the usual photos of the props mixed with screencaps and comic art and whatnot, and some basics on the real-world props. Probably nothing to write home about.

Yeah, I have a copy of the last official Lightsaber guide-- I got it from a book fair when my kid was in grade school. It's in-universe and full of prop errors.

I'm sure this will be like a lightsaber dedicated VD, with little filmmaking factoids. If they are talking blades, it's in-universe.At the very least maybe we'll get some good photos.

That said, if they do emulate what I put together I can't really cry foul. I am just summarizing years of RPF research and using photos that don't belong to me.

One thing we have the advantage of though is that my book isn't on a publishing scheme. It's a living document I try to update a couple times a year. A published book would have to wait years for revisions and we all know how much info can come up in that time.

Fact of matter is that the current regime has an established history of blatantly stealing from fan artists and other sources. See the recent Hot Toys Palpatine TROS teaser poster, fanmade ship designs being copied and appearing in Marvel’s comics, etc., etc. They’re not at all above plagiarism.

Your book is THE go-to source, and, as you note, a living document. It’s essentially the culmination of 20 years of RPF research and development.

Prob going to be an updated version of this:

Didn't know that! I'm sure it's the same book with TFA stuff added.

Based on the “Look Inside” preview on the Amazon page, that seems to be the case, although it appears that the Skinnyflex is still in there instead of the Disney Trilogy Graflex. I’m good with the first edition.

Yeah, it uses the ROTS sabers for Vader, Obi-Wan and Skywalker saber. The only actual OT saber seen in the book is they use Archives photo of the ROTJ Luke hero for his entry.

Yep. Considering when the initial version of the book was released, that’s not surprising. I’m not particularly annoyed by that, since the book presents the sabers in chronological order, and so the earlier/as first built/prequel iterations would be the ones to go with.

Curious if the pictures of the OT sabers will just be reprints of everything we have or if it will all be new?

Well since we know for a fact that Lucasfilm only has the Ranch Saber, the Barbican, The V3, the cave-build, the MoM, the PT sabers, and some bunny copies, I don't know if NEW pics is in the cards. But NEW TO US pics of old props could be cool. The Archives book showed us there's tons of stuff we haven't seen.

It's pretty common for prop departments to take pics of everything DURING production. There HAS to be a binder of nice prints of every OT prop from 35mm still film.

One does wonder how limited the reference is, though. After all, any photos showing things like the two-rivet ANH d-ring clip would surely have been made available to licensors for official prop replicas in the past. Yet it seems that prior licensed replicas have been influenced by many of our own discoveries. It’s entirely possible that there just isn’t that much reference in the archives. I doubt that anyone was anticipating a need for meticulous documentation of the props, back in the day. Just a few reference photos for publicity and making toys and whatnot. The toe pic and the top shot showing the RAF clamp stamping on the ANH Graflex may well be the best/only photos there are of that prop.

For ANH, there may not be a ton. But by ESB, Lucas had recognized the importance of documenting everything and keeping the archives. I'm still holding out hope that when his sci-fi museum opens here in LA he'll put private stuff into it. Maybe he's had the ANH Graflex this whole time/

I've got the second edition. It's more of a kids book. Though it has a nice picture of the Darth Maul toy lightsaber repainted for the younglings. And a good photo of Obi-Wan ROTS saber. The one that mysteriously has a black neck.

I know of people with access to the archived photos who have been searching intensely for OT saber pics and came up with nothing. But they also said that there must be a ton of unscanned negatives still hidden away that might reveal more.
