The Smugglers Room - Star Wars Themed Prop & Rec Room

Re: The Smugglers Room - Entertainment Room

Oh. My. Goodness.

Want. Do. Want.

Your wife is awesome!! I can forsee lots of people wanting to use your basement as a 'set', lol

Re: The Smugglers Room - Entertainment Room

Have you (or anyone else) considered building a fake window with a large LED/LCD TV behind it? The idea, of course, is to display a star field, etc.

well, before the suggestion of the escape pod door was posted, I had planned on spraying the window-well black, then running LED's for starfield. Then I was going to make MDF window panels that looked like Star Destroyer windows (the triangle shaped ones on the SD bridge)

The window is pretty well secluded from water (from Rain and snow) as it has a plastic cover over it, so running outdoor lights for effect would work.

So now I have a dilemma, and not sure what to do.

What do you guys think; false window with star field, or Escape pod doors?

Re: The Smugglers Room - Entertainment Room

OK. I apologize for the quality ahead of time. I used a camera to get pics of the video as it's paused on my TV. Anyone who has the DVDs and can provide better screenshots I won't take it as an insult. :) (Also, I resized them down. (should be 4x6 at 72dpi) If you want them larger, let me know)

In going back and forth I figured these pics are about the best for getting details that give the feel of the pod entrance. The first is the hallway outside the pod. Then there are two of the controls to open the door. The next two are of the entrance of the pod open, the first with R2 entering, the second to get a better shot of the greeblie above the door. The next three are of the top half of the door closing.

Not sure if that helps the creative juices.

Re: The Smugglers Room - Entertainment Room

Now you've got me going back and forth between a starfield and the pod door too.

I think the bottom line is that it's gonna look awesome either way!

Thanks for the pics!!! I'll tell you what; when we play poker in this room, and we do it alot, we like the window open cause it gets a little stuffy down there. So here is what I am going to do.

1. Create the escape pod door
2. Create a false window behind it that will give you a view of the starfield.

You will be able to remove the escape pod door when ever you want.

This way I can have both:lol

Looks like that will be this week/weekends project! Thanks brother!!!!

Re: The Smugglers Room - Entertainment Room

Hello all, its been a few weeks since I have had a chance to do any real work in the basement, but I had some time this weekend.

I played around with several designs for the window; everything from the escape pod in ANH, to covering it entirely. In the end, the pics below are what I went with.

I have a ton of touch up work to do on it; bondo a couple mistakes, fill in others, and tons of sanding. The whole crazy project will take a month of sanding alone:cry(not looking forward to that part at all!!!!)

I also created 1 of the ceiling panels. I have played with several ideas for that, and wanted to try it out. I havent decided if I am covering the entire ceiling in this way, or just parts, I'll have to see as I go along.

At any rate, hope you enjoy, I'm getting a little closer every week:love

Re: The Smugglers Room - Entertainment Room (Update 2/26/12)

This is so awesome, I wouldn't even dare showing my girlfriend this cause she would never allow me to do anything of the kind :p well, unless I get halfway done before she notices ;D

Re: The Smugglers Room - Entertainment Room (Update 2/26/12)

This is legendary. This isn't even completed yet and it's already made my top 10 RPF builds.

I love the fact that you are so Original Trilogy-oriented. You have a great eye for what makes the OT "look" fit together.

However I do suggest some nice Aurebesh lettering thrown somewhere :love

Geez. This is actually sort of depressing in a way, because I know I can't ever come close to this level of cool.
I came up with an idea a while back to make a desk lamp out of air duct parts, and at the time I thought that was like, a pretty sweet idea. Kind of pales in comparison to this...

Wow. Let me go sulk in the corner with my blasters and pretend that I am a skilled prop-builder.

That window section is looking great!

Thank you sir!

I understand completely, I am beyond lucky in this regard. My wife is so unbelievably cool about the project, she actually is excited. And I have to tell you, she is an Interior Designer that works on large scale Casino and Hospitality projects, so to get her to sign off on this project was nerve racking. She is amazing!!!!

WOW man, thank you for the compliment! I am truly humbled, there are so many great builds, and amazing artists in this group. Mine is just a passion that stems from being a kid and wanting to live in a space ship:lol

Now, on another note, i would love to see the the desk lamp project, SERIOUSLY, those are the kind of props that ROCK:thumbsup

Re: The Smugglers Room - Entertainment Room (Update 2/26/12)

I'm lovin' this thread, Fuzzy!
Now I've gotta convince my wife to let me do something similar in our office :)

Keep up the great work :thumbsup

Re: The Smugglers Room - Entertainment Room (Update 2/26/12)

freaking awesome!!! sickest project ever.

Re: The Smugglers Room - Entertainment Room (Update 2/26/12)

Again guys, thanks for the kind words, and to my surprise i see a 5 star rating next to my thread:eek:eek:eek THANK YOU! that's pretty awesome of you guys!

Re: The Smugglers Room - Entertainment Room (Update 2/26/12)

You only see 5 stars because 6 isn't an option! This is great work. I have been watching this thread and am just amazed.

Re: The Smugglers Room - Entertainment Room (Update 2/26/12)

This is looking better and better each time I see it!

Re: The Smugglers Room - Entertainment Room (Update 2/26/12)

Been following this and read your other builds. You've inspired me to design a nerdy home recording studio - all those random angles and pieces would make for some good diffusion.

Re: The Smugglers Room - Entertainment Room (Update 2/26/12)

thanks again for all the comments, i am really glad you guys are enjoying the build.

I did a little work last night, i am on a push this week to get as much as I possibly can done before the weekend. I have a couple days coming up with no plans:eek So, i am hoping to have all the panels, wall and ceiling, done by Sunday night. (probably just as unrealistic as an earlier post about finishing the project in February :facepalm) but hey, without deadlines I would never get anything done.

So, these are just some minor pieces i worked on, let me know if you are getting bored with these pics.:confused

This is the small section above the window. There are some visible gaps in the panels, but all of those will be filled and ajusted when this gets put up for final fitting.

This is a second ceiling panel:

And this is one of the panels from the other side of the room, these panels will be slightly narrower 16" wide:

Re: The Smugglers Room - Entertainment Room (Update 2/29/12)

My face hurts from all the gawking I've done at this thread. The corrugated metal out of the basement window just works fantastically. The more time I spend on RPF, the more I want to buy a house for reasons other than not having to rent.
